Fucked Up - David Comes to Life (Yesterday, inspired by Fucked Up's new concept double-album David Comes to Life, we set about charting the history of the ambitious impulse in punk rock. Today, we continue the series up to the present day. You can read the first part of the column here . We pick up in 1988 with one of rock music's greatest landmarks.) Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation (1988) Yet another record about which there is little [...]
:: I found this amazing blog last night thanks to Chunklet and instantly devoured the whole thing. A guy found a trunk full of seven-inch vinyl circa 1987-1993, then decided to write about and rip a record a day until he got through the entire collection. All of today's random tracks that don't suck have been culled from said trunk. :: Rolling Stone has reprinted its 1968 story about the inception of The Band . :: You pick up that new Reggie Watts vinyl [...]

September isn't actually a terrible time on the tourist front. However, I had the pleasure of riding the metro with a distinctly odious group of tourists yesterday. As a result: DC Tourists - whether you reside in overpriced hotels, and crowd the streets of Georgetown (shopping, of course); wear tacky DC-related paraphanalia, such as FBI, CIA, and I Hate/Love Obama (formerly, Bush) T-Shirts; never leave the Mall except for the occasional Zoo, Mount Vernon, or Arlington Cemetery expedition (friends, if all you see is the Mall, you haven't seen DC at all); refer to DC as Washington (or, [...]

Nation of Ulysses Black Hills Workshop Gym Rapid City, SD 9/2/92 This show was the second (and last) time NOU played in Rapid City, SD and the turnout was huge. From what I remember, it was the last show of the summer, right before school started up again for the year. This recording is a little loud on the vocals (they were playing in a gym), but otherwise it's great late-era NOU soundboard recording. Setlist: 1. N-Sub Ulysses 2. Mockingbird, Yeah 3. Hex-Proof 4. Uptight/Hickey Underworld 5. A.P.E. [...]

image Folks, most of you out there probably don't know where the word came from. Many of you are thinking violent thoughts about followers of this phenomenon. In Mexico, they get treated like american homosexuals in the 70's and 80's, subjected to harrassment and physical assault. What am I referring to? Emo. Emo, emo-core, screamo, &etc., and I bet you think you know what it is, too. Let's be clear about one thing; lame is lame, and what these histrionic youth are listening to is L A M E.
:: Kraftwerk will be releasing a massive box set in October . Somewhere, my boy Shelby Cinca is changing his pants. Rightfully so. :: Kevin Seconds ( 7 Seconds ) and Greg Attonito ( Bouncing Souls ) recently sat down and interviewed each other . Are they in diapers yet? Nah, I'm kidding. Those kids are alright. :: The gals in Those Darlins are my kind of ladies. They like to go skeet shooting with records . Just like my grandma. Blue Creek represent! :: Buddyhead [...]

I Hate : that The Real World is coming, that they will be in Dupont near where I work. That photograph? The house. I Love : that the Black Cat and Wonderland Ballroom have let us know they definitely won't be Real World-friendly. I Hate : Capitol Hill interns, with their red badges of shame. As a DC native, I cringe at the idiotic things visitors say and do - but capitol hill interns also believe that they are all-knowing and [...]

Sometimes we dig dance music, especially when it involves old DC stalwarts like Ian Svenonius of Nation of Ulysses fame, and now of Chain and the Gang . He's been working with Sebastian Thomson of Trans Am, and they've come up with this floor banger, under Thomson's Publicist moniker, destined to move your hips at the local party. I mean, take a look at this picture and envision yourself dancing away. Let's hope there is more to come from these guys. [...]

For those of you into all the newest lo-fi hits of the last few years, there is really one man we need to look towards: Calvin Johnson. The man was the driving force behind the great Beat Happening and also the Halo Benders , which featured Built to Spill frontman Doug Martsch. Clearly, this man's fingerprints have been all over the musical landscape, and he's at it again this Saturday night at Emo's, as he takes the stage with his [...]

Calvin Johnson / Chain & the Gang come to Atlanta on Mon., May 11

Calvin Johnson, former Beat Happening front man and K Records head honcho, is going on tour with his brand new band, The Hive Dwellers. The tour will kick off on April 14 with K newbies Chain and the Gang, featuring Ian Svenious (Nation of Ulysses, the Make-Up, Weird War, etc.) Interestingly, aside from the front men, the two groups will consist of the same members — Bret Lyman (Bad Thoughts), Brian Weber (Dub Narcotic Sound System), Sarah Pedal, and Fred Thomas (Saturday Looks Good to Me, City Center). - Jon Lorenz [...]

Chaos has descended upon our nation's capital and 2 million people have come to welcome our new president. This means that I have been subjected to tour buses trying to parellel park on the street, masses of people lost on the metro, and near stampede's outside of Ben's Chili Bowl 1 as the nation lines up for a half-smoke and to see where our new president had a mikshake. In the midst of all of the insanity, the following musically related things have gotten me through the inaguration. 1. Jets to Brazil - "Sea Anemone" [...]

Ahh man, Abandon Ship...Jesus Christ! Bad Religion meets the Refused. Queens of the Stone Age meets Blanks 77. Get Up Kids meets Archers of Loaf... Channels 3x4 meets Dr. Feelgood meets Electric Soft Parade meets Elliott meets Gallows meets The Stooges meets Jesus Lizard meets Leftover Crack meets Les Savy Fav meets The Thermals. And eventually, they kind of sound like Nation of Ulysses if they had gotten together on the west coast. I really like these guys a lot. I don't know what else to say about [...]
