This year I had much greater difficulty putting together a list of my favorite local albums than I did a non-local list. And that makes me proud. Not proud for myself, of course, but of this city and the wealth of musical talent it produces. There were more genuinely great local albums produced in 2011 than I can ever remember in my eight years living here, and narrowing them all down to a reasonable number proved to be a much more arduous task than I ever could have thought. And yet, here we are. The caveats and criteria [...]

2011 was the year I dove headlong into local music. I listened to just about everything I could get a hold of, scouring through Facebook, Bandcamp and Soundcloud in my attempts to discover as many local artists and as much local music as I possibly could. But even now I feel as if there's so much out there that I'm missing out on. New bands and artists seem to to be sprouting up every day and the landscape of Atlanta music is constantly in flux, morphing and shifting into something unique and different. And so while the list [...]

m'kay maybe this is a bit too fancy to be dismissed with a wave of fuzzbox, three chords and 4/4 beat, as mere garage. but the core is thatkindofthing. s'pose it's coming from the same place as the amen dunes record sacred bones put out this year: spacemen 3, phil spector, 13th floor elevators, etpetercetera. but there's more oomph, more spunk, less paisley. lashings of fractured psych and muzzy blooms of tunes. hollered swoons of words and melody, smothered, covered, inward looking, buried, hidden/hiding. everything shrouded, dense, gauzey. then they lock into some bastard noisegroove , pirouetting between the [...]

The N.E.C. Pineapple [Pretty Ambitious Records, 2011] 4 out of 5 stars Purchase This Album: Pretty Ambitious Way back in January I posted a review for Mood Rings' excellent debut EP, Sweater Weather Forever , one that — among other things — established the EP's second track, "Indian Hills," as the benchmark for local music singles in 2011. To be clear, I was speaking purely in pop terms; [...]

I'm not sure exactly what universe that Atlanta's The Natural Extension Concept , or for short The N.E.C. , are coming out of - but I've been loving on their sonic experiments long time . Creatures Flaming , off their brand new LP Pineapple , which will drop on November 5th, explores outer regions like none I've heard for quite some time. I'm fascinated with the adept hand in which they create songs that are at once part bouncy space oddities, part flowering in the sky above [...]

Enlightened Atlanta-based power trio The Natural Extension Concept, usually denoted simply as The N.E.C. , dropped a propulsive, damn-near masterpiece in 2010 titled Is - a body of work that flawlessly explored the strata between Nuggets and Psychocandy at gulf stream velocity. Ready for another go this year, The N.E.C. reaches even further past the edge of the observable universe with the forthcoming cosmic punk manifesto Pineapple , a seven-song collection that packs an expanded sonic palette and some befuddling, Dark Side of the Spoon -evocative artwork. The [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Danzig w/ 2Cents, DevilDriver Tuesday, May 10 Center Stage - 1374 West Peachtree Street in Atlanta 30309 Admission $25 ADV / $27 DOS / Purchase Tickets Explaining why you should go to a Danzig show is fucking inane. The logo tells you everything you need to know. Look at it closely. Shit is black, evil and stupendously fantastic. If the logo doesn't speak to you, if it doesn't move you on some deep emotional and [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Titus Andronicus w/ Carnivores Sunday, April 24 The Earl - 488 Flat Shoals Avenue in Atlanta 30316 Admission $10 / Purchase Tickets I just want to take a minute to appreciate the fact that Atlanta has become a regular stop for New Jersey rockers and committed road warriors, Titus Andronicus . I love doing year end roundup coverage and I'm still waiting to put up the bands to watch list, so I thought we'd highlight some of the great bands we discovered over the past year. Some of them made our 2011 bands to watch list, some of them didn't, some of them aren't even NEW [...]

The N.E.C. 's newest record, Is , dropped back in January, but it just recently saw a vinyl release as well. I finally got myself a copy, and I have to say I'm hooked. They manage to pack quite a range of psychedelic grooves into barely twenty minutes of music. Even when they lean toward their garagey side more than I typically prefer, they still pull it off better than just about everyone else. But Is is a bit of tease, as I find myself wishing each song was about twice as long in duration. They are [...]
