Up-and-coming LA band The New Division deliver a hypnotic dreampop sound lying somewhere near the intersection of New Order and M83. This airy remix of their recent track “Pride,” sent to us by Chicago bandmates John Mörk and Joe Kalas, is an atmospheric, laid-back production that’s nonetheless emotive and full of energy. Meandering skipping stone synths and metronomic drum crescendos wash over John Kunkel’s haunting vocals in this blissed-out sunrise anthem.
Revisiting some bands tonight, just to see if anything new has been posted. I thought I'd check out The New Division. I re-fell-in-love with this track. It's exactly what I like: a little electronic, a little guitar, and dreampop vocals. One of the best aspects of Soundcloud is that you can see what other artists "liked" or added to "favorites". I have discovered so many great tunes by following an artist and seeing what they deem worthy of a favorite. A great example: I saw that Some Desperate Glory added this [...]

We recently had the chance to catch up The New Division frontman John Kunkel to chat about the band's inception, 80s influence on a new generation, their album and more! Check out this fresh overview of the buzzing LA based 4 piece below. B3SCI: Tell us a little background on The New Division and how the band came to be? The New Division: It started off originally as a one-man project back in 2005 that later turned into a full band. Janzie, and I ( John ) met [...]

Many things have happened and are still happening since TEEEL released University Heights last winter. After a brief tour and round of interviews that included yours truly , Jim Smith aka TEEEL began a remixing tour de force wherein he mixed tracks for artists ranging from Brothertiger to Toro y Moi . While still currently working on his next record (TBA), he decided to do one more before embarking on a brief tour that includes parts of the Northeast U.S. and SXSW . [...]

Came across this from The New Division today and I find it particularly beautiful. Dreamy, atmospheric and bursting with that nostalgic energy. Some other tunes I can recommend:

The New Division , the latest Cali band that will be big in 2013, have a crafted a near-perfect electro-pop tune in “Kids”. With just the right addition of ealry 90’s sampling, the cloudy feel will hallucinate back to your imaginative youth. Sure this is a topic that’s been covered heavily, but when it’s done as skillful as this, it’s hard to deny it’s precense. This is taken from their just released Night Escape EP. You can stream it below and buy it here . Night Escape [...]
Unstoppable track from The New Division. Taken from their EP Night Escape , out now!

Picture a sunny Saturday spring morning and you're living in some off-the-radar suburb somewhere in middle America, on your way to your high school, being driven by a clearly annoyed parent to be dropped off to detention for something you really could care less about. Think "The Breakfast Club" except that you have no interest in watching this movie as it's happening to you. You stare out the car window reflecting on the blue skies and nice air that's out there knowing that your entire Saturday will be swallowed up by this lame punishment your about to venture [...]

"Kids" is the second track from Night Escapes , the digital EP from L.A. dream-poppers The New Division . On this track the group strays from 80s slowdance into full electronic arena rock. The song opens with heavy, driving beats to keep it moving forward and big, broad-stroked synths paint epic rhythms over top. "Kids" eschews the quick, plastic rhythms of 80s dance and instead strives for the grand, the moving, and the anthemic. Night Escape is out now on the [...]

If New Division 's name calls to mind the two bands whose thick reverb, quick rhythms, and affective vocals ruled new wave in the late 70s and 80s - Joy Division and its progeny New Order - that's no mistake. The L.A. four-piece borrows heavily from this pair of giants, but strains those iconic sounds through a modern filter to create something fresh and new. "Pride" opens with lush, full synths playing out a lilting melody, and when John Kunkel's low croon comes in with Brock Woolsey's carefully picked guitar, the track is immediately transported to a slowdance on [...]

Tweet The New Division are influenced (by their own admission) by Depeche Mode, New Order and Joy Division. Hence the name, though personally I'd have plugged for Order Joy Mode. Oh well. They are based in LA, Yankland and were founded in 2005. That's, like, super old in the 'hip new band' stakes, they barely classify but presently everyone (by everyone I mean a few excited spotty, pre-adult Pitchfork wannabees) is getting all Tomorrow's World about them. I could [...]

I had a strong deja vu effect when The New Division sent me their track "Kids" the other week. I've been vibing out to their music for awhile now but the first time I heard and wrote about them, I referenced my 80s childhood/love of the Elephant Show . While this is not a cover of "Skinnamarink" by any means, it is an electronic fused ballad equal parts hyper and hypnotic. You could jam this song out and then fuse into MGMT's "Kids" for some real retrospectively ear-candied enjoyment.

Pour les nostalgiques des Depeche Mode, Joy Division, New Order et des années eighties, vous devez prêter l'oreille à The New Division. [...]

Having just released their Night Escape EP, LA's The New Division are getting a whole heap of attention - and rightfully so. Their music merges emotive pop and widescreen electronics with a heavy nod to the likes of Joy Division, New Order and Depeche Mode. It was clearly time we caught up with their front-man, John Kunkel, to find out where it all started, how it all works, and where it might all go from here. Bowlegs: Great work on the debut EP – when did you guys get together, how long has it [...]
