The traditional country stars — Conway Twitty, George Jones, Tammy Wynette Charlie Rich, Dolly Parton, Charley Pride — were still selling many records in the 1970s, and periodically crossed over to the pop charts. Singers like Donna Fargo evoked the good old days with happy songs like The Happiest Girl In The Whole USA. These were still the Opry years — in fact, in 1972 the Grand Ole Opry opened a theme park called Opryland, and wo years later moved out of its long-time home, the Ryman Theatre, to Opryland. But the Nashville scene no longer monopolised country, [...]
6am Repeat is a recurring feature here at Folk Hive in which we stream the latest track that plays incessantly in the earbuds when we awake at that hour and imbibe massive amounts of coffee and cigarettes in preparation for the advancing day. To see a band like Nitty Gritty, featured at Daytrotter this morning, is just fantastic. The good shit never goes bad, ya'll. This [...]
Vassar Clements & the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band : Orange Blossom Special [ purchase ] I've danced around not posting any obvious songs this week, but heck with it. If we can't post Vassar Clements on fiddle week, then what can be said for us? And Orange Blossom Special is known as the fiddle player's national anthem, so it's a natural fit. Will the Circle Be Unbroken was the first bluegrass album I'd ever heard, and it came [...]
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is perhaps best known for helping to bridge the gap between the older generation of American folk musicians coming out of the 1940s and 1950s, and the rock and roll youth of the 1960s. Their seminal double record Will the Circle Be Unbroken presented the band alongside a number of country and bluegrass luminaries such as Maybelle Carter and Roy Acuff, and more or less proved that American musical traditions could span the generation gap. Listeners dropping the needle on the Dirt Band's self-titled debut for the first time may be [...]
Chick Pic found at www.hiren.info Not a ton of life-changing shows going on this week, but here's what grabbed me: The Bluebird Café seems to be the place to be this month. The city's most successful songwriters have been donating their time and talents to help out Alive Hospice . Bluebird is famous for being a starting place for many writers and artists (including Garth Brooks and Taylor Swift). Their songwriter and open mic nights are a great way for Nashville newcomers to get their feet wet and meet other [...]

Ah, Flower Communion Sunday. Traditionally the last Sunday service before a Universalist Unitarian parish moves to a lay-led summer, the Flower Communion celebrates both the contributory nature of the UU community and the natural world by bringing the blooming world into the church at its last, and then letting it go back out again as we ourselves turn to the world of social justice and peace-making. The beauty and diversity of life - of our own, and the bounty of the land - is present in the rich cornucopia of the green-stemmed bounty. [...]

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band & Michael Martin Murphey - Lost River ( buy ) (1989) Hi, I'm back from the Briançon area in the Southern Alps where I spent 2 weeks of well-deserved vacations. The town is located at the foot of the mountains, surronded by numerous valleys. The more I come to this place, the more I find it beautiful. Me and my wife took a lot of river pictures while hiking, so this 100th post will be full of images and songs of mountain rivers. Now september comes [...]

In Memoriam – August 2011
The two most notable deaths in August happened on the same day: the 22nd. I've already paid tribute to Nick Ashford (HERE) ; on the same day that great songwriter passed away, Jerry Leiber died. I don't think it's necessary to go into detail about the Leiber & Stoller story other than to say that they had a crucial impact on the development of rock & roll. Leiber was the lyricist, and as such got Elvis Presley to sing the great line in Jailhouse Rock: "Number 47 said to number 3,'You're the cutest [...]
