In my review for The Non-Commissioned Officers ' recently released sophomore LP, Money Looking For Thieves , I couldn't help but mention their excellent debut album, Make-Out With Violence , and the story behind it. How the band had formed to score the coming-of-age zombie film Make-out With Violence , how the "band" became a means of raising money for the film's completion, and how by the end of production they'd turned into a full-fledged act. Until recently, that album and film were both available only in physical [...]

The Non-Commissioned Officers , or Non-Comms as they're often lovingly abbreviated, are one of the hottest acts bubbling out of Nashville right now. Ask any geologist and they'll tell you - that's hot. They've torn up the local scene, played Bonnaroo, produced and scored a feature film, and just this weekend dropped their second album, Money Looking For Thieves . Though Money Looking For Thieves is indeed their sophomore album, in many ways it's also a debut. You see, The Non-Comms have a strange origin, and before we dive into this album review, it's one [...]

Documentaries: Takeaway Show #100 – Soema Montenegro Pt. II - Take a look at Part II of Vincent Moon's Takeaway Show , as he goes further into the world of Argentinian musician, Soema Montenegro. In the last part, Montenegro plays a number of her songs at her home, and oddly enough, she barely comments on her work. This time, there is virtually NO dialogue, as we watch her wander the streets, guitar in hands, and voice in the air. Her second album and first U.S. release, Passionaria, [...]

That's it! The gauntlet is being thrown down! Well, I guess it's a hammer in this instance, but the point is that competition is fierce. The first installation in the second annual Road to Bonnaro... #5 - The Non-Commissioned Officers - " Frozen Tongue " (from Make-Out With Violence ) The Non-Coms made last year's list too - without even releasing a proper album. This year saw the band return to the stage, along with the long-anticipated release of the Make-Out With Violence soundtrack - forty-four tracks strong and loaded with more gems than most bands produce in their entire careers. Aside from the tracks I was already familiar with, "Frozen Tongue" was the standout for me - you can't deny that delectable guitar [...]
* Because being a politician "would mean (having) to get along with too many people,'' Toby Keith says he is not going to run for governor of Oklahoma. He adds, "I couldn't deal with all the lies." Sp... Continue reading "Toby Keith the Non-Governor, Spinal Tap and More Newsy Bits" >

It should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone who regularly listens to or reads Out the Other that I am SUPER psyched about the official release of the Make-Out With Violence soundtrack, which is finally available . On top of that is the awesome news that The Non-Commissioned Officers , the band that has been performing tracks from the soundtrack live for the past few years, will be playing a soundtrack release party this Thursday, April 23 at the Mercy Lounge. And how [...]

The official SXSW trailer. So we told you when the folks from the Make-Out camp first made their five-song Let's Get Awesome EP available. But, oh, that was just a paltry little taste. They've just ... Continue reading "Full Make-Out With Violence Soundtrack Now Available" >

What killed me a little about 2009 is that one of the greatest things I heard all year was something that wasn't released, and truth be told wasn't even an album. It was a collection of songs that soundtracked the film Make Out With Violence , and it was floated to me as a folder of mp3s from a friend who knew people associated with the film. I basically fell in love with everything in that folder, and when I finally saw the film during Next Big Nashville last [...]
Okay, on to the final 10 songs, since the clock is ticking down to the end of the year here. If you missed Monday's show, go ahead and listen to the archive - you can hear me ramble on about all ten of these and the reasons why I love them. But I'll recap a little here as well, first with #10-#6: #10. The Felice Brothers - " Radio Song " The Felice Brothers were one of my best "discoveries" of 2008 - their self-titled album is definitely one of [...]

Everyone keeps asking me what the "must-see" shows at Next Big Nashville are this year, and to be perfectly honest, it's pretty tough to pick anything specific. I'm a little overwhelmed by the amount of talent playing this year's festival - I love a lot of these artists and I'd love to check out even more of them - but at the same time I don't really feel a ton of pressure to SEE THIS NOW (like I do at something like SXSW), because I've seen many of these bands, and if I miss something excellent I will hopefully [...]

Wednesday night is the official start of this year's Next Big Nashville festival, and like last year - things are kicking off with a film. (Unlike last year, I think it's safe to say that we won't be seeing quite so much up on the screen in the Belcourt this time around. Um, yeah.) Anyway, the Nashville premiere of Make Out With Violence is absolutely my pick for Wednesday night at the festival, especially with the final performance by [...]
