It's that time of year when every music website, publication and blog (including this one) are busy compiling end of year lists. This time around, I thought I’d shift the focus to the bands and artist's who've played a 'BarryGruff Presents' show this year and ask them for their 'favourite album of 20122, 'favourite song of 20122 [...]
Mp3: North Sea – From The Fire
The North Sea already laid down a marker with a number of sumptuous sneak peek demos over the past 6 months and now the band are releasing their self-titled debut EP. The Dublin 5-piece have something of a predilection for ’80s/’90s indie and it certainly shows, with echoes of The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, The Smiths and The Stone Roses shimmering throughout [...]

Altar Eagle - “Parallel Lives” Back in ‘09, jack-of-all-trades Brad Rose ( The North Sea , Charlatan , Digitalis ) decided to cool it with the skull-crushing noise and start a shoegaze-pop (!) project with wife Eden Hemming called Altar Eagle . We haven’t heard much from the pair since their fantastic Mechanical Gardens LP for Type (hard to believe that was almost two years ago ), but today we got a [...]
The North Sea were formed in 2010 through a collective love of '80s and '90s indie and it certainly shows, with echoes of The Wedding Present, The Smiths and The Stone Roses flickering through. Young, new, indie-electronic band Into The North Sea is impressing me with their song "Throw Away Letters"
A review of an August gig in Edinburgh featuring Cathal Coughlan & birthday boy Luke Haines.

The North Sea Radio Orchestra: I A Moon On their last two albums The North Sea Radio Orchestra have combined the classical influences of Vaughn Williams and Benjamin Britten with pastoral English folk – traditional musics meeting in a pop context. That mix is still present on album number 3 (a self-released record on their own label) but they’ve broadened their scope to incorporate other textures - synths and percussion are now overtaking the use [...]

A hopeful refry of LMYE's ultimately unsatisfying earlier attempts (also this ) at 'curatorial' posting: an aide-memoire compilation of 10 mostly new releases ( plus one for luck) that I've yet to hear but want & mean to, by artists I - &, in some cases, we - rate or am interested in hearing - fixed here against the relentless onward rush of time & tasks, preserved for chewing over later ... the north sea counting down the days (excerpt) 2010 (française version) Rien ne bougeait.

A couple of days ago I discovered, quite by accident, the music of The North Sea. One of the songs in that post , "Ferns Pressed in Paper", a beautifully delicate piece, has since become very popular on the Hype Machine and made me curious about the unique individual behind it. Thankfully, he was willing to answer a few questions and reveal a little of the mystery around him. Q . Can you tell us a little bit about you and your creative process. A . "My name is Brad Rose. [...]

The waves crash ashore, a car beeps on the street; you pause and look, then move on. Life seems like some eternal flow of things, thoughts and feelings, a soundtrack of existence. In such a flow of sounds reminiscent of the works of Michael Brook and Brian Eno, super busy man Brad Rose, under the moniker of The North Sea, weaves his own stream of consciousness. Originally folk oriented, The North Sea is continually evolving, currently dealing with experimental and ambient phases of music. In addition, Rose founded and edits an indie label and an online experimental music [...]

WORD
What is most remarkable about Exquisite Idols is it's purity and the uniqueness that comes from that purity. This is, quite simply, the very definition of what it means to express yourself with music. Every song feels as if it wasn't so much as composed but birthed. This type of organic 'free folk' isn't normally my kind of thing, but The North Sea's collaboration with Rameses III and the consistent quality of Type Records made this a purchase well worth taking a chance on. To say that was a rewarding decision is downplaying the undeniable beauty of the [...]
