Monday Afternoon Quick Fix runs every Monday afternoon to showcase the best of Chicago music news, views and stories from around the interwebs and blogosphere that we might have missed. • The Tribune's Howard Reich explores the possibility of both the Center for Black Music Research and Chicago Jazz Ensemble finding homes at other Chicagoland universities such as Northwestern and DePaul , if Columbia College decides to withdraw funding. • Gapers Block's Ricardo Villarreal talks about divisions in Chicago's hip-hop scene with local artists and music bloggers , including [...]
Dymaxion by The Earth is a Man I don't know whether the Earth is a man or a woman. I certainly have some friends who would be willing to dispute the instrumental post-rockers choice of names, but all that business aside, we're here to discuss the music. The Earth is a Man found its origins at Northwestern University in Evanston where its members Doug Kaplan, Maxwell Allison and Zach Robinson attended. It's hard to be an instrumental band because without vocals, your instruments must speak for themselves. [...]

So it appears that famous and wealthy actor Tommy Hanks has a son, aside from Colin, that has big aspirations of his own. How big? Well, for starters Chet attends the fabulous life of Northwestern University and not content to just soak up the tangible benefits of a beloved father, Chet has decided to embark on a career in hip-hop (his MC name is Chet Haze). Because, sure why not? It's 2010 and somehow, this all makes sense. From Gawker : Chet Hanks is the son of [...]

A couple of weeks back, we asked you to vote for your top 10 artists for 2010. We had almost 600 votes, and we're now going to countdown the top 10 over the next 10 days, finishing with our number 1 on 10th December at midday. Today, at number 3, are Chichester's The Northwestern . The Northwestern are a quintet who formed from the disbanded promise that was rock band, Hope of the States. Following on from the dismantling of his previous [...]
2010 is approaching soon. Twelve new months full of brand new music, from old veterans, young bands and complete upcomers. Just to go up-to-date on what's happening with the artists that pleasure Flint's tastebuds, it's time to give a little checkaround to 2010's possible offers by artists I'm intrigued about. Rumours, confirmed news, it's all here. Not keen on the artists I display? Give a sly prod at the other writers, maybe they'll reveal their musical stalking results as well? After the cut, a big list of various names. [...]

The Northwestern, brainchild of ex Hope Of The States members Sam Herlihy & Simon Jones, are putting the finishing touches to their brand new EP. The band have been working hard this year having released a double A-side single featuring tracks 'All The Ones' and 'Telephones', toured across the country, supported Editors at their homecoming show and are now working on 'The Ghostrock'. 'The Ghostrock' will be a four track EP featuring tracks: What Did I Do Ghosts on VHS House Of Bees Redthreads [...]
Shellac of North America record when they want and tour when they want and defuse all hecklers with the confidence and acumen of thirty-year bomb squad vets. Guitarist/vocalist (and engineer) Steve Albini speaks now 36 hours after returning to America. This interview by Chris Ziegler.

Friday again, and although summer is officially here (we hit 90 degrees this week in the ATL), but it seems like it's also been raining for the past few weeks- thus the banner this week. Hopefully, the rain will hold off for the weekend, and the annual Virginia Highlands Summerfest will stay dry. Rain or shine, there'll be some pretty great music happening there this weekend- check out Matt Hires, Back Door Slam, and Cowboy Mouth on Saturday and The Constellations and Manchester Orchestra on Sunday. I've added some tracks from Summerfest bands to this week's mixtape, beefing [...]
So the tracks from the new post-Hope of the States project The Northwestern posted on their Myspace may not have been the most promising material even if there was something in them, but the song the band are now giving out is already more ensuring. It's called Fire and like the two tracks we have already heard, it continues on the line of being a bit more upbeat and stripped down than most of HOTS stuff but this time the song sounds like direct continuation from the original band's sophomore effort/swan song Left [...]
Losing Hope of the States was a real bitch. During their short, problem filled (original guitarist killed himself just before the debut album, heavy executive meddling and pressure) musical career the band crafted two fantastic albums (2004's The Lost Riots and 2006's Left ) that while weren't the sort of perfect gems they could have been with little changes, carried a great promise of the band creating an absolute classic in the future. Which then never realised after the band called it quits soon after the second album due to being fed up with the [...]

Weekend Party Chatter - Sports And Weather Usually the stuff of lame diner parties and awkward double dates, we're going to drop in some thoughts on both the weather and sports from the weekend because 1) the two were very...

I don't know how I arrived at this point in my life without knowing that a film like American Movie existed. One of my co-workers handed the DVD to me yesterday and said that I needed to watch it as soon as possible. The description on the back of the case said it was the hit of the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, and it was the story of a man's obsession to make movies. Horrifying images of Be Kind, Rewind -like terribleness flooded my brain, but I was informed that this was much, much different -- and [...]
