Back in 1998 I was starting my first year in community college and my soundtrack was comprised of My Bloody Valentine, Rollerskate Skinny (for some reason they were huge where I grew up) and The Swirlies. A friend of mine, who was always into the latest in shoegaze and electronic-pop music, would often premiere his new finds in my car (he always said my stereo provided the best sound quality.) One day he played two bands for me that I had never heard of, Schroeder's Cat, a My Bloody [...]
I'm trying out file den as an mp3 host. This is just a test post. The Notwist are a German indie rock band that Speedy J introduced me to. The song Pick Up The Phone was featured on a season 1 episode of Veronica Mars. mp3 du jour: The Notwist - Pick Up The Phone

So that when he would jump on people I'd say "DOWN TEMPO!"...I'm so serious that's gonna happen one of these times. Just you wait. Anyways I was flippin through some tunes and found two downtempo/electronic/chill songs and couldn't wait to share them. Then I thought, why not a whole mix? Why the picture of sushi? That's a pic of my friend's dish at Komasa in Little Tokyo, one of our favorite joints, the dish is called Chirashizushi , it's a mixture of deliciousness. I mention it cause ideally listening to downtempo, eating sushi, reading the news with a light [...]

The Notwist is an Experimental-Progressive-Indie German musical collective. Their first albums and demos were a more aggressively based metal genre, although with their age came more curiosity on pushing the limits, trying new sounds, new instruments, the use of synths and drum machines, keyboard and guitar effects... Their 2002 (Europe) | 2003 (America) album "Neon Golden" had shown the members willingness to try new things, to play with sound. Pitchfork gave the album a 9.2/10! Luke Buckman, writer of the Pitchfork Review wrote at the end of his piece, "It's a shame that most people might not [...]
I f you came looking for punk, then this mix is not for you. It is more of a weekend chill out mix that has a bit of an instrumental (tomorrow) and electronic flavor (today). Very much like something you might find over at the Motel de Moka . Just don't forget though that we like much more than standard rock music here at Can You See the Sunset. Eclecticism is a good thing. This is part one of the mix. Part two will be posted just in time to accompany your coffee [...]

Featured above is John Gourley [Guitar/Vocals] of Portugal. The Man which has recently become a band of obsession for me. The style of Portugal. is very interesting indeed. The band makes use of many electronics, drum machines & synths - and of course guitar, drums, and bass guitar. The music is mysterious, interesting and at times haunting. The bands name is not "Portugal the man" it is in fact "Portugal. The Man" Is there a reason to this? Absolutely. Gourley explains, "A country is a group of people, with Portugal it just ended up being the first country [...]

I have...a LOT of German music. Dang! In the interests of preserving my sanity, let's break this up into genres! KRAUTROCK Kraftwerk - Die Roboter ( BUY ) Kraftwerk - Metal On Metal ( BUY ) Ah, our robotic overlords Kraftwerk! You have them to blame/thank for influencing many New Wave, electronic, and synth bands. These are two of my favorite songs. If you want an [...]
It just occurred to me that I've been blogging covers for more than three years, so to celebrate I've decided to do what I rarely do and revisit some gems from the past. Below are tracks I posted in 2004 that are either reader or personal faves (and, in a few cases, just weird/bad tracks that amuse me). I know a lot of readers didn't know about me back then. I believe I timed these so that they could be burned to audio disc for posterity, should you be so inclined. Enjoy! Collections from [...]

There's this band, right. They're called the Notwist . They're from Germany. They put out a record a few years ago called 'Neon Golden' and it's one of my favourites. They mix laptop-based electronica with real songwriting and guitars, and it's beautiful. They have this one song, ' One With the Freaks ', which might be on every mix tape I've made in the last three years. They used to be a heavy metal band, too. They've been very quiet for a long time, which is a shame. And though, sadly, I can't report any new material from them, [...]

As promised, here's a live set from the Notwist , recorded on February 12 th , 2004 in Vancouver. I wasn't aware that the band was from Munich, the location of our connecting flight home on Tuesday, until hearing the introduction. It sure is a small world. While the elements of laid back vocals and electronic textures are definitely significant here, the live setting is a bit more immediate than the studio setting, which is always an appealing part of a show. Themselves guest, contributing to a pretty [...]

As lovely as Florence was, it is fantastic to be back. For all its downsides, I really do enjoy the information overload. I'm obliged to compile my excessive tourism, so expect some photos in the near future. Aside from the camera abuse, I came to a realization that, while live sets remain my bread and butter, I'm really limiting myself by avoiding "normal" studio recordings. There are inevitably songs and artists that I'd love to mention, but unfortunately live recordings aren't always available. However, in an environment flooded with recommendations, I'd really [...]

* The Notwist : One Step Inside Doesn't Mean You Understand (6.5 mb) | This Room (8.5 mb) | One With The Freaks (6.5 mb) From Neon Golden : City Slang Back in the beginning of 2006 (almost 10 months ago, yikes!) I posted some live tracks by this band, The Notwist (look here ). Since I really associate their sound with the desolate fall/winter landscapes, I decided to track down this album, Neon Golden. And [...]

I recently talked to someone who asked for a recommendation. I told them my usual, prepared current favorites. From there the usual "I'll be sure to look into them" response was returned, and the cycle seemed to begin again. What was different this time around was the fact that I had my itunes on shuffle and "Set Yourself on Fire" came on by Stars. She was blown away and asked why I hadn't recommended them before. I honestly had no answer. They were old hat to me and it was a given that their [...]
Ok I know I just got back from Vegas and Montreal but "something" big happened (more on that soon) but Ill be back on Monday with some insane pictures. Maybe. Here is a song to hold you over... the Notwist - Pick up the Phone (fans of later radiohead and portishead)
here's three calming artists to listen to on a quiet weekend afternoon. what exactly is a cinematic orchestra? a 6 piece collaboration fueled to share in the elegance and passion of film-noir, improvisational jazz/funk fusion, downbeat, ambient electronica all created into an orchestral, atmospheric soundtrack. while there will never be another davis or coltrane, its nice to take a liking onto

I'm about to head to Indy to catch "Little Miss Sunshine", and I just can't wait. Really, the tension is breaking me inside. I think this is the first kinda-sorta indie film Steve Carrell has done in a while. Good thing, or bad thing? We'll find out, that's for sure. So before I leave, I guess I'll leave you some songs : Big Star Baby (Demo) - Mojave 3 You Have To Be Joking (Autopsy Of The Devil's [...]
