It's time to listen to a bunch of the tracks I have not posted recently. These are just a few of the songs that would get their own individual posts here on GIMME TINNITUS if I only had the time. Here is the next NOT POSTED mix. Listen. Downloadables: Harnessed in Slums (mp3) by Archers of Loaf That's So Raiden (mp3) by The Numerators [d/l Human Blanket @ thenumerators.bandcamp.com ] [...]

This video about Arab numerals and the invention of the decimal point in mathematics were inexplicably more interesting than it should've been. It's also the perfect length, just long enough to be informative, not too long that my limited attention span wavered. By the by, Arab numerals originated from India FYI: There's another BBC documentary, named The Story of Maths . It's four episodes long and the second deals with various numeral systems throughout history. [via Reddit ]

(photo by Jason Travis) Available now on a split with The Numerators, "Chicken 30" is more screamy, screechy, piss and vinegar punk rock from the girls in The Coathangers, a band that's more fun than menacing, but they're still totally menacing. The split 7" is available now via Suicide Squeeze and it features "Chicken 30" [...]

Whether you know them for their brash on-stage performances or their beer guzzling antics (we're fortunate to know them for both), The Numerators have been turning heads and, meanwhile, developed a staunchly devoted underground scene in the Texas panhandle. To be precise, Lubbock (of all places). Their latest endeavor features a track from a Tour CD/R EP they compiled while on tour last year peppered with a few "proper" recording techniques. "Strawberry Dreams" is a scuzzy, synth-laden track conjuring up sounds of Liars pre- Drums Not Dead . Featured as the AA side on a split [...]

Maybe it's because my mouth is always open, but apparently, my face gives off a "Hey, please tell me how I can help you, or be there for you" message, when that's pretty much the last thing I want when I'm in cab. Yes, you have a great voice, but I think a "I've got a great voice and I sing" would have been enough pre-cab-journey small talk, rather than telling me about your sponsorship deal that went wrong and how your lifelong dream is to move to the States. Fine, I can relate to that, but still, perhaps share [...]

It was a nice Thursday at Cake Shop- lots of good vibes to go around. I think people from Austin just generally know how to have a nice, laid back time, and how to be nice to each other. Yellow Fever brought all that, plus their excellent tunes with them from Texas. They played a concise, short set full of satisfying songs. The beauty of Yellow Fever is their mastery of thirds. Their sparse, dueling guitar and keyboard parts often reside in this interval, and become irresistibly catchy in the way they slide up to that second note. The genius [...]

There's a lot of interesting shows swirling around this Thursday night, but I think this will be the most pleasant one to attend, mostly based on Yellow Fever's presence. I've blogged about these delightful Austinites before, and I'm happy to say that their star is on the rise. Their sparse, oftentimes dark, songs have shades of Sleater Kinney and Le Tigre-like rhythms, but are decidedly something all their own. The only other band on the bill I know is Dream Diary, who I saw once at Monster Island Basement. Cute, but ultimately unmemorable, it is possible that they could be [...]

I've been reading and thinking a lot about the underground indie/punk movements of the early 1980's. About bands like Black Flag and Minor Threat, and the trails they were able to blaze across the country simply based on word-of-mouth, hard-to-find fanzines that were often Xeroxed by hand, and the strength of their genre re-defining music. For bands like these punk rock was not a fashion statement, but an entire way of life that effected one's views on everything from politics, to where one lived, what one ate, or what one did for leisure. And still these bands were able [...]
Many of my good friends from the great state of Texas have been creating some pretty noteworthy music as of late --and the best part is it is all free. This morning's post is dedicated to these friends. Last year when Austin band The Unbearables called it quits, some members of the oversized collective decided they would stick together a keep making music. The resulting band was One Hundred Flowers, whose decision to nix instruments like saxophone, trumpet, and flute in lieu of more typical instruments like synthesizers and guitars migrated their sound away from the Sufjan Stevens [...]
