I'd like to say tomorrow that today the subject was roses, but once again, it's death. Today's sub-topic: Does it really come in threes? I'm not talking about famous people dying in groups of three. I've never seen any consistent, compelling evidence to support this theory/urban myth. I'm talking about threesomes. What is it about them? If one is the loneliest number and two's company, is three totally unlucky? Consider musical trios, like Beastie Boys. Too often, it seems, one member gets taken from us way to soon. The latest example of the law [...]

Lionel Richie has been on my mind this week. A lot. Not just because I've been writing a piece about him for my Sound and Vision column at OurStage. He's been in my head because everywhere I go, his songs seem to be blaring in my ears. Lately, unexpectedly, he's been all over the radio in Thailand, with tracks from Tuskegee , his recent No. 1 album featuring duets with top country stars on his golden oldies, as well as the original versions of some of those golden oldies. The only Richie songs on [...]
Golden Grove: The Sound of Philadelphia lets us be part of a legendary performance by Philadelphia artists in their prime.
Ruben & Ra's Retrospective imprint have another gem in the offering. Rayko , fresh from his 'Broadway' being hailed as 2011's No. 1 Disco track on Juno, delivers his take on The O'Jays 'Put Our Heads Together'. As part of the sixth instalment of Retrospective's Edit EP series and in pure Edit style Rayko takes all the lush synths and thick bass from The O'Jay's original and turns things up to 11 for some massive '80's synth Funk. The twanging lead line of the track is highlighted perfectly by Rayko and, if possible, he seems [...]

Golden Gate Groove: The Sound Of Philadelphia in 1973 is one concert I would have loved to have been at. Released today, the album, according to Philadelphia International Records "documents the first—and only— time that the stars of Philadelphia International Records ever played in concert with the label's fabled house band, MFSB. The concert took place in San Francisco during the annual CBS Records convention at the Fairmont Hotel in September 1973." In a review of the album on the music site The Second Disc , Joe Marchese writes: Recorded on July [...]
With consummate showmanship, the mighty O'Jays deliver a performance that lives up to their legacy.
This is, hands down, my favorite track off the Capital Punishment album. So timeless...

I'm not big on decorating the Christmas tree, especially when my dog Eddie rips every hanging decoration off and eats the pines like they're peanut butter, but a cure for the chore is music, and rather than dusting off the festive classics record, Motown edits were the true calling this year... Rayko's output of classic edits is massive but his latest work is definitely one of his best yet and this one played whilst putting up the lights! Rayko - Say You'll Be (Rayko Roller Disco Edit) [...]

It's 3:09 P.M. and the sun is already setting, but the feeling of sun on your skin on a Sunday morning isn't forgotten with this O'Jay's classic Loves Me Like A Rock . Total and utter lost gem that's somehow making this horrible winter okay. mp3: O'Jays - Loves Me Like A Rock

The Philadelphia International All Stars : Let's Clean Up The Ghetto [ purchase ] Always a socially conscious label, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International Records released a compilation in 1977 that called for urban rejuvenation through the call: "Let's Clean Up The Ghetto". The record featured some of the label's great names: The O'Jays, Lou Rawls, The Three Degrees, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, Intruders, Billy Paul, Dee Dee Sharp and Archie Bell. All but four of the [...]
Soul music has never sounded as sweet.

If you're a fan of Brooklyn-based group The Stuyvesants , then chances are you're familiar with Darien Birks a.k.a. Flwrpt . Every now and then he drops these really cool mixes with rare gems and impeccable song choices! Sample Food Vol. 2 kicks off appropriately with the Otis Redding classic "Try A Little Tenderness" which Watch The Throne has recently revived. I happen to enjoy discovering the origins of samples and many of you Blind I Faithfuls are music historians, critics and even producers. So this one is for you. [...]

The second SAVED! compilation gets righteous on your asses with a churchful of glorious '70s soul – and it does so without going for the easy option of all those Stevie Wonder songs about God being a zillion lightyears away with whom you should have a talk (and did George Michael realise that he was singing a song of praise to God when he had a hit with Mary J Blige?). While neither Stevie, Aretha nor Marvin feature here, Al Green does, though with a song that precedes his lesser Reverend Green phase. And, of course, Curtis Mayfield [...]

Crazy how much this Angie Stone jam still gets remixed. It's like it's still a current track. Def a testament to how killer the groove is on the original. Spanish DJ Kaze takes his crack here and pretty much smashes it. The track goes heavier here but it absolutely works. Kaze combines not only those heavier floor-filling elements but also the glide of Angie's original track. The result is nothing short of a heater. Get into it below. Angie Stone - I Wish I Didn't Miss You (Kaze Remix) [...]
