In Early February it was announced that Memphis, Garage Rock legends The Oblivians would be heading into the studio to record their first full length studio album since 1997's Play Nine Songs With Mr. Quintron . The Oblivians consisted of Greg Cartwright, Jack Yarber and Eric Friedl, all three of the members would alternate between guitar, bass and drums, both live and in the studio. The band is known for their Garage and Punk infused sound which made them a popular and prominent band in the underground Garage Rock scene. They initially lasted from 1993 to [...]

Via In the Red's Facebook page : It's official; The Oblivians will be recording their first studio album since 1997 next month and In The Red is putting it out! Here's Larry Hardy and Greg Cartwright shaking on the deal. (ht Blurt )

In The Red Records made an announcement yesterday that they will be releasing the first new album of new material from Memphis, Tennessee's The Oblivians since the 1997 LP ...Play 9 Songs With Mr. Quintron . There's no additional info at this time as the dang thing hasn't even been recorded yet, but I can't express how overjoyed I am to use the words "new album" and "Oblivians" in the same sentence. Check out the classic track "Mary Lou" below!

The all-powerful Reigning Sound roared out of Memphis with the realest soulful rock 'n' roll since the Flamin Groovies, the Real Kids and Esquerita all ruled the earth together. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Greg Cartwright makes 'em scream, shriek, cry and weep and he visits California far too seldom, so don't miss these shows at Alex's Bar this weekend! (With the Strange Boys opening!? How will we ever go back to normal?) Win tickets here , and then read this interview by Chris Ziegler. Check out the homey Brian Oblivian " SUBMISSION " for the Roy Ayers Project ! Sounds real nice my friend. I hope you make the cut! Brian: Really Really is a track that I just put together which was specifically inspired by what you guys are doing with the Roy Ayers Project. In creating this track, my first goal was to highlight a great Roy Ayers song which gets a bit less play than the usual hits. For this I tapped into his album "Vibrations" for the song "Baby I Need Your Love." In [...]

Photo by Jeffrey Brent Shrewsbury Photo by Geoffrey Brent Shrewsbury The Oblivians are one of the few "cult" bands of the 90s to actually surpass their peers and continue to be productive and extraordinarily creative, into the next decade and beyond. Even after their official split in '98 Jack Yarber, Greg Cartwright, and Eric Friedl have continued to impact and make music. It's that true Memphis maverick spirit shining through, some bands have it and some do not. It is a truth that is lost on some Memphis music fans who believe [...]

And You'll Say Urge Overkill Exit the Dragon Comments: This was a great album and this song advanced UO as songwriters. Too bad this album got trashed back in the day. Make You Mine The Fondas Runaway Bombshell Comments: The Fondas craft great Detroit songs. There are 5 great songs on Runaway Bombshell. This is one of the great songs. Although the piano during the middle of the song is really annoying. Luckily someone only got to play with it for 30 seconds. Childs Death. [...]

[The Low Anthem at the Paradise, Boston, MA 4/20/10. Photo by Michael Piantigini.] BE PREPARED: Rhode Island's soul-piercing, magic-conjuring, Americana (in the purest sense) purveyors The Low Anthem have just announced Smart Flesh , the follow up to the widely acclaimed Oh My God Charlie Darwin , which topped my 2009 favorites list . Recorded in what appears to be a cavernous, haunting (if not haunted) space in an old pasta sauce factory , the handful of tracks that the band has played live or teased online (see below) hint [...]

A car company sponsoring garage rock makes perfect sense, right? Scion seems to think so. In addition to footing the bill for a bunch of free shows in New York this past year, Scion will be staging a day-long Garage Fest for the second year in a row. Like last year's fest in Portland, which included psychedelia legends Roky Erickson and Simply Saucer along side newer acts like Black Lips and The Fresh & Onlys , this year's fest includes a mix of new and old. Reunited stalwarts The Oblivians and [...]

The line-up for this year's Goner Fest , the Memphis garage-rock festival put on by the label and record store of the same name, was recently announced. Now in its seventh year, this year's Goner Fest, which will run from September 22 to 26, is highlighted by the return of Guitar Wolf (pictured), the storied louder-than-loud Japanese rockers whose first American album, Wolf Rock , was released by Goner in 1993. Eric Fiedl, the founder of Goner, will perform himself, with The Oblivians (also recently reunited) headlining on Friday night. Other sure-to-be [...]

As promised, here´s some more on We Never Learn , New Bomb Turks singer Eric Davidson´s recent book on the punky garage bands that ruled the indie roost from ´88 to ´01. A very loose underground scene, with bands sharing stages and labels who were musically as far apart from each other as the Dwarves from Man Or Astroman or Dead Moon from Rocket From The Crypt. And also a scene which incidentally paved the way for the unlikely success of the White Stripes. Buy it if you missed this drunk, [...]
So there's that Ted Leo Benco show at Skully's after the much-posted-about Parking Lot Blowout on July 10 (Gibson Bros, Scrawl, Turks). And now there's also this, after the Blowout ends, at the Summit : THE OBLIVIANS CHEATER SLICKS BASSHOLES DEXTER ROMWEBER DUO (OF FLAT DUO JETS) My, oh my... Tickets go on sale June 10 at Cafe Bourbon St . (As always, the hype section of the message board is a good place to keep tabs on upcoming shows and get details [...]

When bands like The White Stripes and The Hives began bubbling to the mainstream surface around the turn of the century and the term "garage rock" was being bantered around as hip currency despite its obvious retro connotations, there was still a whole swath of bands left largely ignored. It is this segment of the underground that Eric Davidson, the lead larynx of the New Bomb Turks and longtime music scribe for a number of publications, examines in his new book, We Never Learn: The Gunk Punk Undergut, 1988–2001 [...]

A few years back, I was talking to a friend of mine about Neil Young's guitar playing, and he said: "You've gotta be really good to play that badly." I knew exactly what he meant. The same can be said for singers who scream-- the best ones are great singers to begin with. Look no further than James Brown. In my opinion, there's no greater screamer in American Music right now than Greg Cartwright, who happens to be a great singer as well. By the photograph and title of this post, you may have thought you were gonna [...]
Jack Oblivian got his last name with Eric and Greg and their Popular Favorites but— like Cartwright and Reigning Sound —he found new greatness with his solo work. His Disco Outlaw is rock 'n' roll as natural as Charlie Feathers and Johnny Thunders and he'll play his first show in Los Angeles in ten years tonight at the Echoplex. This interview by Chris Ziegler.
