With a release date of October 26, The Octopus Project 's new album, Hexadecagon , is just around the corner...finally (you may remember that they first dropped hints about it back in February), and to coincide with the record's release, the band are heading off on tour. They won't be alone in this endeavor, Starfucker will be joining them on most dates. The full schedule of shows for the trip together, which includes an October 8th date at Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg, are posted after the jump. [...]

Austin-based experimental pop band The Octopus Project is set to release their new album, Hexadecagon , on October 26th through Peek-A-Boo Records. The album didn't actually start as an album (still with me?). Hexadecagon was first unveiled as a live performance project. While driving from one venue to another on tour, the band listened to minimalist composers Terry Riley and Steve Reich. This driving soundtrack eventually inspired the band to use custom electronics (The Bend Matrix) and take existing software (Ableton Live, VDMX, OSCulator) to its limits. After crafting the music, they decided to [...]

They've added Panda Bear, Pretty Lights, Girl Talk and more to the lineup this year, a seriously awesome-looking festival based on the artist roster attached. Read on for the full details... The MoogFest 2010 weekend kicks off on Friday with performances by the previously announced MGMT and Big Boi, plus Girl Talk, Panda Bear, RJD2 and others. Artists joining Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation [...]

Saturday night I made my way over to The Mohawk in Austin for a show by Austin's very own veterans Octopus Project. Joining those kids were fellow locals Mother Falcon and Tia Carerra. Fortunately for us, our photo lady Mary Rehak just so happened to be at the same show so we borrowed a few photos of Octopus Project. Follow the jump for some thoughts on the show and fancy photos. I'll start off by offering a big apology to Mother Falcon... Unfortunately, I was running super late to the show and didn't make [...]

What is going on this week in the D? A light but good work week of shows with heavily buzzed Dawes coming to Fort Worth which should be definitely worth checking out. And then we have the Dallas Observer Music Awards Showcases hitting this Saturday night in Deep Ellum, which will certainly be the place to be with a ton of great local bands plus the guest appearance of Lucero, The Secret Machines and the greatness of The Cool Kids on the outdoor stage. You could also satisfy your nostalgic appetite with either Weird Al Yankovic or [...]

Modest Mouse – No One’s First, and You’re Next. Download “Satellite Skin” (mp3). The 8 songs on this EP are oddments from Modest Mouse’s previous two albums, Good News for People Who Like Bad News and We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. While these songs might have seemed out of place on those long-players, they jounce together into a solid but diverse EP. From the banjo driven tracks to guitar abstraction to Modest Mouse’s pop style, it includes a few of 2009’s best songs from short-players. Evening Magazine – The Ride Across Lake Constance. The People To Get Excited About If You're Going To SXSW But Would Like Anyway Even If You Weren't Going Mix Part 2 of 2 You're probably wondering what the hell all those letters mean. Kicking off South By Southwest coverage this year is a massive mix for a massive fest. There's been quite a bit of material I could have covered before the fest officially goes down, and the operative phrase there is "could have." Undoubtedly, it's a gargantuan amount, and the time I've had lately has [...]

Formed back in 1999, The Octopus Project continue to investigate all sorts of acoustic and electronic sounds in their music. After producing a great body of work that includes top-notch releases like 2006's collabo with Black Moth Super Rainbow, The House of Apples & Eyeballs , and 2007's Hello, Avalanche , the band seems to thrive on making music on their own terms and performing at nontraditional venues. Don't believe me? Well, according to TOP's Josh Lambert, the band plan to rock Whole Foods [...]

Via The Octopus Project 's website . Full statement after the jump. Hi everybody! We're tremendously excited to announce the project we're knee-deep in creating right now... As you may have guessed from the title of this web page, it's called HEXADECAGON. That's the geometrical term for a sixteen-sided object, and we chose it because the show we're working on is being written for an eight-channel sound and eight-channel video system: a sixteen-sided audiovisual panorama! The eight speakers will be set up in a circle surrounding the audience, [...]
