Short O+J this week, folks, as I'm pressed for time. If anyone is into half-naked dudes punching, kicking and choking each other under the guise of sportsmanship, check out my mixed martial arts writings at MMAMAnia.com . There's a big event this weekend, and I've been busting my hump doing two pieces a day over there. You little peanuts didn't suggest anything to me last week, so I got nothing new to report on that front. Consider me heartbroken, too. On the "11 in 11" concert front (yes, I've decided to go add [...]

It's almost that time of year again... that's right, Thanksgiving is just around the corner with the rest of the holiday season following hot on its heels. It's good to be back to regular posts just in time for the holidays. Food, family, friends, and drinks. So, last year I posted an awesome roast turkey recipe , and this year I wanted to post my mom's vegan pumpkin pie recipe, but I have no idea where it is. So here is one of my other favorite pie recipes (courtesy of my mother)... and some songs. Heck, [...]

Here's an encouraging note for the bands around town who try and try and try some more: Leslie & the Badgers' self-released album "Roomful of Smoke" (which we loved when it came out last year ) has been picked up by Nashville-based label Thirty Tiger (home to Elizabeth Cook, Justin Townes Earle, Jim Lauderdale and Those Darlins). A slimmed-down, re-sequenced version will be out on Aug. 17. Heck, the press release even called Leslie Stevens a "starlet." ☛ More than 25 venues across the country — four in L.A. — will be hosting [...]

Another Wednesday brings some new faces to the Music That Isn't Bad scene. I am pleased to announce my most recent discovery of the up and coming Phantogram . While searching for this weeks feature, I came across a song that really jumped up and slapped me in the face, so considering this circumstances I had to post this song. "Mouth Full of Diamonds," is the first single off Phantogram's first album Eyelid Movies which just dropped in February. More importantly, this brand new single is the focus of today's Wiki Wiki remix. [...]

I was kind of a slow starter regarding The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Today I love them, but that wasn't always the case. I would say around the mid 80's I decided I absolutely loved "Behind The Sun" from their 1987 release The Uplift Mofo Party Plan. To this day it's one of my favorite RHCP tracks. They had a couple of other songs being played on the radio like "Fight Like a Brave" and "Me and My Friends," but I wasn't totally sold until Mother's Milk hit the streets in 1989 with the Stevie Wonder cover "Higher Ground" and their [...]

With Thanksgiving now less than two weeks away, I figured it was about time to repost my tried and true recipe for brined and roasted turkey. So what if I ganked the original recipe from the amazing Alton Brown a few years ago. I've made enough delicious changes that it really feels like mine though. I'm still thinking about the possibility of cooking something else a little less traditional for Thanksgiving... something like a Bacon Explosion perhaps. (Yum!) And my mother's vegan pumpkin pie to balance it all out. Oh yeah! Here's the recipe: [...]

Over the years, The Ohio Players' Honey has become known as one of the crucial funk albums of the 70s. Revered by artists in hip-hop circles, Honey is a record most music heads have probably come in contact with, in one way or another . Known for their sleek funk sound and controversial covers , the Ohio Players were one of the premier bands of the funk era. "Sweet Sticky Thing" is a jam for the late night. Only appropriate. [...]

Words By Darius Sinclair™ The pianos & organs on this song bounce from wall to wall in your ear canal. Throw in the scatting & the sax near the end, this one will leave you in a short trance. And to think, I believe I read that this song was completely improvised. Download - Ohio Players - "Ecstasy"

Dan Love , the man behind Oh Word's epic de-construction of Illmatic , returns with a sequel worthy of hoverboards and Gray's Sports Alamanac. A tip of the tilted brim to Hip-Hop is Read, for aiding and abetting the sample collection. Despite a plethora of highly acclaimed and commercially successful albums over a nearly two-decade career, there's little doubt that for fans of that New York boom-bap, Jay-Z's solo debut, Reasonable Doubt , remains his creative zenith. With his newly constructed Mafioso persona devastatingly realised [...]

Filed under: Twisted Tales It was like the funk version of a creepy Alfred Hitchcock mystery. Who was the woman whose horrible scream was embedded in the Ohio Players' No. 1 hit 'Love Rollercoaster,' and why was she screaming like that? At the height of the Ohio Players' popularity in the mid-1970s, when the R&B band scored eight Top 40 hits in three years, DJs across the country played what amounted to a game of Telephone, passing along an ever-shifting rumor about the fate of the bloodcurdling screamer. Supposed insiders claimed [...]

Last week we featured our opinion of the worst nude album covers. This week here are some of the best... This post contains nudity and some are NSFW. "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" - Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass - Hands down the best cover of all time. Joey Heatherton - She used to do commercials for "Perfect Sleeper." I'm guessing she never got a whole lot [...]

The best laid plans... I had intended on launching the new (and improved) format, but alas time and life got in the way, next week I promise the new look (and a new take) on the Friday Five... until then here's this weeks all to brief five! For those who have not joined in the Friday Five here is all you need to know; each Friday I hit the shuffle button on my iTunes and share my five and drop a little knowledge and insight for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, sometimes there isn't. Sometimes [...]
Yes, this is a recipe for brined and roasted turkey with a musical accompaniment, but I'd rather call it Can You Eat the Turkey From the Southside? Seriously folks, Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away. So I've had deep-fried turkey (good), smoked turkey (even better), but my favorite way to cook a turkey for Thanksgiving (or even Christmas) is brined and roasted. Yes, I'll admit that I ganked the original recipe from the amazing Alton Brown a few years ago, but I've made some minor (and delicious) changes. Here's the recipe: [...]

I have to admit, most my experiences with neighbors have been either benign or horrible, not many have been the type to greet new residents with freshly baked cake, it's more along the lines of a reminder which trash cans are mine, to make sure to keep my garbage out of their bins. It's quite a difference from the childhood Welcome Wagon visits I remember my family receiving. Nowadays, I'm happy if my neighbors are quiet enough to falcilate sleep. I don't think I'll ever get over the tramua of being sandwiched in a studio apartment [...]

Ah Friday. The day most of us look forward to beginning at around 9:30 AM on Monday morning. The gateway to the weekend and the only thing standing between you and the release from the daily grind... I think that I can easily say for everyone, Thank God it's Friday. Friday also means it's time for the Five. This week I struggled a bit with the theme as we head into the final stretch of "The Theme Days of Summer". It hit me that we've covered a good bit of ground to date and that one thing we've [...]

we always talk about artists who we believe are inspired by prince, but less so on who originally inspired his purpleness. prince has pretty much created a recognisable sound of his own but there are elements of many artists of the 60s and 70s. we don't need an excuse to post about prince here at dirtymartini: a post of prince duets , featuring beyonce, angie stone, madonna to name a few a post of [...]
