The Laughing utilizes a vast array of percussion, bells, dulcimers, ukuleles, synths, clarinets, flutes, blankets of noise and lush harmonies. Illustration by Natalia Thorpe words by Oliver Primus Last year a band by the name of The Old Romantic Killer Band released an EP so great that the hairs on the back of my neck stood up, formed a discussion group and created a petition called 'Interview The Old Romantic Killer Band'. My first thought was "Wow, that's a pretty rubbish, yet descriptive, name for a petition" but god dammit, they were right. Here it is. [...]
Guardian writer Dave Simpson has filed a report from Leeds, a UK city that's experiencing what many are referring to as a renaissance of that old '90s "I know it when I see it" musical-descriptor standby, grunge. Simpson reports that the energy and the fuzzed-out guitars are all there waiting to be brought back into fashion, but there are a few crucial differences: "Although Wonderswan wear the check shirts of their American counterparts, and employ tongue-in-cheek slogans such as 'slack as fuck' and 'party like it's 1994'—reminiscent of the self-deprecating marketing of Sub Pop, the original grunge label—all these [...]
The Old Romantic Killer Band -'The Swan With Two Necks (Bad Sneakers) TORKB sound like an interesting proposition on paper, a singer/guitarist with an obsession with American blues and British folk and a drummer fired up by heavy metal and 80s hardcore. Following on from two singles they unleash their debut album, which is nine tracks and twenty two minutes long. The good news is that there is no messing around. The...well, not exactly bad news as such, but reality is that as with their single 'You Don't Know How To Love' (not included [...]
This unsigned band are grunge-soaked but with a strong blues stain on their music. They caught my attention on this, their first CD.Lead man Harry Johns has a bit of a Paul Rodgers-style voice and some attitude, while drummer Greg Holland provides a solid backing beat. Two standout tracks are Four Season Blues and Trouble Causer, the other tracks on this album are in similar vein, there are just two band members but they make a strong enough noise for at least five! They are originally from Leeds and in their short career have toured with the Von Bondies and [...]
I mentioned them a few posts back so I thought it would only be fair to give The Old Romantic Killer Band one of their own. I interviewed the bluesy, rocking duo earlier this year for Drunken Werewolf magazine (out now, GO GET A COPY) and I was impressed by the visceral, intense performance they unleashed on stage. It was very loud. Guitar, and vocal, strings were pushed to their limits by Harry and Greg battered out an powerful and insistant drumbeat. Combined, they create an emotive and aggressive sound which comes across on record too. [...]
TONIGHT IN MANCHESTER: FUTURE SOUNDS INVADES IN THE CITY
After stomping around Manchester for an evening seeing what everyone else is putting out, I'm even more excited about the line up that's playing this evening at Cellar Vie because I think we have some bands that aren't on everyone's radar yet but have the potential to really make an impact. We also got a great set of cards handed us by ITC when they made our showcase in the venue that's closest to the conference hotel. We've set up a page where you can taste test all [...]
