OLYMPIC SYMPHONIUM | THE CITY WON ’T HAVE TIME TO FIGHT FORWARD MUSIC GROUP Canada’s Olympic Symphonium is back with its third LP , The City Won’t Have Time to Fight – a lovely set of folk-pop songs that showcase the group’s talent for producing well-crafted songs that don’t need to be flashy to sound unique. Recorded in one week in Fredericton, New [...]

The City Won't Have Time to Fight because, presumably, the serene acoustic meandering of The Olympic Symphonium 's third LP will have lulled said city's population into a happy trance long before they can mount a resistance. This grandly-named Canadian folk act have been doing the rounds since 2005, but this most recent effort documents the results of an experiment in recording on their part; The City was recorded in just a week with engineer Brad Perry in the band's native Fredericton, New Brunswick. The Symphonium's soundworld remains one of quiet, deliberate craftsmanship; what [...]
If I'm being absolutely honest with myself, I'd have to admit that I am a procrastinator. I'm more inclined to put off the little things that can slip by easily without upsetting the normal order of the day than big ticket items, but there's plenty of things on my "to do" list that have been needing to get done for a very long time now. I have a lot of respect for people who show discipline and commitment to a project and waste no time in getting down to business. Take Fredericton's The Olympic Symphonium [...]
BLACKBIRD BLACKBIRD(Electronic Indie)Blackbird Blackbird aka Bye Bye Blackbird aka Mikey Sanders proclaims himself as a dream pop artist. From the forward-thinking land of San Francisco, CA comes the latest single off the artist's forthcoming LP and it is just the right mixture of palatable pop and eclectic electronica. I'm not sure whether adding an 'a' to the end of 'electronic' changes its

They call it "chamber folk pop," the gentle songs that make up The Olympic Symphonium 's third album, "The City Won't Have Time To Fight." It sounds a bit like The Beach Boys turned way down to sleepy-mellow. The music feels traditional, even if the compositions are 100 percent originals. Lots of harmony, acoustic instrumentation, easy finger-style guitar work . . . Nice and soft on the ears. Settle Down And here's an older cut . . . Blood From a Stone

Here is the first video by The Olympic Symphonium for the track "Side By Side", taken from their sophomore album More In Sorry Than In Anger . It's a very beautiful and creative video, not to mention a lovely song. Make sure to check out the mp3 below though, as it's one of my favorite tracks off the album. ~ "Intentions Alone" ~

Shane and his brood have taken off to Fredericton this weekend, so I'm left holding down the fort. Originally I thought about throwing a kegger, letting some nare-do-wells run wild on herohill's nicely upholstered furniture but opted for more cleanly fun. I'm going to be hammering through some news items, records I like but haven't had time to really cover (and won't find that kind of free time in the near future) and probably post a few random links to nonsense. Thought it would be a nice Friday treat to share another video from an East Coast act [...]

The Olympic Symphonium - More in Sorrow Than in Anger ( Forward Music Group, 2008) What is it about the great white north that fosters such beautiful, introspective and intimate music? I suppose that I could make some crack about folks being locked up in their cabins for months on end, but in reality it's more attributed to the fact that the Canadian government actually provides funding for the arts. Regardless, there is an abundance of wonderful music coming from our neighbors to the north and my most recent find is The Olympic Symphonium [...]

Here we are folks: I've finally gotten off my festively-enlarged ass (seriously, between Mom's holiday treats and Dad's beer I gained about 8 pounds) and finished my top albums of 2008. As per usual, these are all Canadian releases, as that's where the ground is closest to my ears. Here they are roughly arranged in descending order (very roughly): The Olympic Symphonium - More in Sorrow Than in Anger (Forward Music Group) I was a huge supporter of The Olympic Symphonium 's 2007 debut, [...]

A few stellar shows have taken place in Halifax over the last few days, which we are doing our best to review. I know most people could care less about a few grainy photos and the classic, "man, you should have been there", but getting some nice theatre/sit down shows in Halifax is nothing to scoff at. First up? Well, last night was the second night of a two-night stint for Julie Doiron and Fred Squire (of Shotgun & Jaybird and Calm Down It's Monday fame) @ the revamped [...]
I just wanted to throw up a reminder for everyone about The Olympic Symphonium CD release party tonight at The Bus Stop Theatre here in Halifax. The snowstorm canceled the original show, and that worked out perfect for me since I was away. Their new record - More in Sorrow Than in Anger - is gorgeous and one can only hope that even half of the cavalcade of Halifax guests that contributed to the songs shows up. We’ve gushed about the new record enough already, so I won’t go on [...]
Sunday, November 23, 2008 A few administrative details before we start: This will likely be my final regular post for the year, so I’m doing my best to fit in a few last albums. Don’t worry though, the whole SOTO family will be hitting the year-end lists pretty hard this year, and I’ll be highlighting some of the best local albums of the year. Look for that around mid-December. Got it? Good. Onward and upward: Ume This new EP from Ume [...]

1. Aan Ja (Over There), [Iran], 2008, Abdolreza Kahani, *1/2 Ο κινηματογράφος του Ιράν έχει περάσει προφανώς στο επόμενο στάδιο.

Like a swimmer dipping his foot into water to determine the proper temperature, many musicians comprehend the importance of testing the waters. Few of them instantaneously discover a stylistic solace, even if they are able to produce an eclectic number of genres flawlessly. For their own songwriting, they will never truly discover what style fits their own personal method best unless they are willing to try a variety of them. The Olympic Symphonium , a Canadian trio hailing from New Brunswick, tend to take this ideology to heart quite significantly. Between the three of them, the members have ties [...]

There are a lot of things to talk about on this Halifax Friday Morning. First, the handy post counter shows that this is our 2004th post. Hot damn. Two thousand posts that range from diatribes about women with holes in the ass of their jeans, personal vendettas against Raps writer Dave Feschuk, Sportsguy Bill Simmons and unfunny yutz Robin Williams, copious amounts of poorly written reviews that are usually about 1000 words too long, golden age rap jams, and more weather metaphors than you can shake a stick at. We’ve been doing [...]

I'm easing back in to relative normalcy and luckily there is no lack of new music to talk about, which makes it easier to do. One band that has caught my ear is The Olympic Symphonium . What I like about them is their simple, organic approach. Now, you know I'm not much for country music per se and I certainly wouldn't call this country, but it's got a relaxed, "picked" feel to the guitars and such that makes me feel like I'm out in the country, maybe [...]

As you read this, I am in California! I should have gotten off the plane in San Diego about an hour ago, and have hopefully made a dent in my NaNoWriMo project- which I have fallen gravely behind on (I should be near 12,500 words by Saturday)! All this vacation prep and writing leaves little time for sorting through all the newsfeeds, emails, music, etc., but I hope I've put something you'll all like here. Of not, come back next week, I'm sure there'll be something then. In the meantime, enjoy this week's Friday Mixtape, [...]
