As you take a look through the list of my favorite singles from this past year, you may notice something a little off. Yep, my favorite songs this past year have been dominated by a lot of female artists or female fronted bands. But, the men also represent this year... just not as strongly as last year. 16. Trouble Andrew - Chase Money Snowboarder turned electro-punk Trevor Andrew turned in one of the best songs of the year with "Chase Money." It keeps the punk philosophy, adds some electronics [...]

(photo via christheobscure's Flickr ) I no longer want to fuck Emily Haines. Metric - Gimme Sympathy (mp3) ( buy Fantasies ) The Beatles or the Rolling Stones? Oh Emily come on . Who are you now? My dad (*)? The Grammy Awards? You and me, Em, we've gotten old and maybe a little wise and oh so dull. Metric ( myspace ) released its fourth album Fantasies [...]

No jive, this is the first great song I've heard this year. It's a big ball of power-pop love, with catchy hooks and snotty lyrics, the Oohlas have crafted a perfect indie pop song for the 2009. They blend their bleek outlook of a consumer-driven, fall in line with everybody else mentality with catchy hooks and even better vocals into a beautiful anthem. It's the greatest song about $30,000 millionaires to date. The song is on their Chinchilla EP which you can get here . [...]

The Oohlas "Lemmings Anthem" As you can probably gather from its title, "Lemmings Anthem" is a song that criticizes conformity, written from the perspective of a person who deeply distrusts the rituals of modern life while at the same time envying the perks of doing exactly what it is expected of her. The interesting twist here is that the lyrics emphasize credit cards, debt, and living well above one's means as being a crucial aspect of this horrible conformity, and rightly calls into question a rush into "adult" living without having a sensible, mature relationship with [...]

If you've ever had the inkling to follow around those kids in The Kooks for a day in New York City, the guys at Astralwerks, Time Out New York, WRXP, and VisitBritain want to help you out. A lot. The grand prize winner of the contest can get two round trip flights to NYC, hotel accommodation for three nights, two seats on the double-decker tour bus with tour guide Matt Pinfield, spots at the in-store performance at the Apple Store in Soho, and two tickets to see The Kooks live at Central Park Summerstage on September [...]

It's been almost two years since I started writing this blog, and until just the other day, I hadn't noticed that I was getting pretty close to a milestone of sorts in QBiM's history: the 500 th post. That may not seem like a lot, but it works out to be an average of about 1.2 posts per day spilling out of my head since I started. Not bad, I think. So how to celebrate this event? First, I get my good friend Tara to work together a kick-ass graphic [...]

Ask and you shall receive, here is a mix of sad sack songs. Although it is the day AFTER valentines day now, as all emo kids know, heartbreak can be a 365 days a year affair. Fiona Apple - Paper Bag John Lennon - I'm Losing You Kate Nash - Dickhead Jose Gonzalez - Love Will Tear Us Apart The Wrens - Happy LEVY - So Hard [...]

Whoever it is that picks the soundtracks for these Spiderman movies is pretty smart. Pick whatever trend is the most popular in music right now and run with it! Last Spiderman movie, it was pop-punk and mall-emo, as was shown by their inclusion of Yellowcard, Dashboard Confessional, Taking Back Sunday and all of that. With the high-selling Arcade Fire and Shins showing that indie is the hottest little genre of music around with the teen crowd, however, the new soundtrack has been announced and it's what you'd expect from a major corporation's attempt at indietasticness. [...]
For a few of our finest, the I-10 is going to be home for the next week or so as they hit the desert road toward Austin. We wish all of our friends good luck, drive/fly safely, and rock them good down'ther. For our industry friends, enjoy the paid vacation and for those who didn't get in this year, we still love you.LOS ANGELES BANDS SHOWCASING AT SXSW 2007:A Fine Frenzy Anavan Antimc Steve Aoki

Here's a little support for five local favorites of mine who will be appearing at SXSW or the vicinity from March 14-18. Each of the songs I've posted is only one of a bunch that are in frequent rotation on my players. You may not be able to see them in Austin, but be sure to check their MySpace pages for their current tour schedules because they may be coming your way. Division Day I may be slow getting on the bandwagon for Division [...]

hi my name is nora, and i like the oolahs . there, i said it. not that it's a bad thing anyways, and actually far from bad, their album Best Stop Pop , which landed on my desk this morning, is GOOD. quite good! like early/mid 90s good. It reminds me a lot of Veruca Salt i think, but less grrrrl and more pretty and well crafted songs. If that makes any sense. Obviously, since I know Sarah , I've been hearing oodles of oolahs praise for months and months now, but I'm really [...]
Good Day to Start a New Job! Well recently I've been in an entirely anti-"Indie-rock" kind of mood, but then over the weekend, I listened to this song by The Oohlas and I just had to play it for you. Noisy and crude as they come, wailing and sometimes tuneless, but big and brave and compelling, The Oohlas are the Ekland brothers and Olivia Stone channeling Kim Deal, plus somebody must play the drums. And actually I had put them as one of my favorites of 2006 , but had forgotten [...]
Got pretty darned excited by the incredible number of great grooves (sorry for all alliteration of late, it's congenital) at Spin.com 's Artist of the Day pages. I'm going to post a series of them over the next few days. I've been looking for a link to the Silversun song for months now. Yippee-ti-yi-yo, dawgies! That's the Picks picktured above. (Mangling names is a way some of us bloggers intimate in-the-know association with groups we'll never get close to in a million suns.) And a big thank you to Spin! [...]
When the Oohlas' Best Stop Pop came out in September, the group was immediately met with comparisons to Belly and Veruca Salt, two love-'em-or-leave-'em acts that may have turned off potential fans. But we've come to appreciate Pop 's ensaring melodies, especially since we're such shameless '90s nostalgists ourselves: The Oohlas - Across The Stars In Blue [MP3] The Oohlas - Cahuenga Shuffle [MP3] The Oohlas [MySpace]

It's Saturday, and Indie Mom and I are seeing the Silversun Pickups tonight at the Troub. There aren't many days before Christmas, so I'm pausing the Favorites list again to post some more Christmas songs. This is absolutely the most hilarious Christmas song I have ever heard. A parody of Queen's classic "Bohemian Rhapsody" wouldn't be so funny if it weren't done this well. The group obviously studied the arrangements and harmonies thoroughly, right down to Brian May's guitar style. And the lyrics! I laugh out loud every single time I hear, [...]
I've always been interested with the idea of being able to provide free stuff to our readers, but have unfortunately never been lucky enough to have the chance to. That being said, I'm kinda excited typing this out as I feel more than privaledged to be able to run this contest/giveaway here on the blog. It'll be fun and who doesn't like receiving FREE stuff?! Exactly. The good people at Stolen Transmission have been kind enough to provide a nice little [...]
They made a shabby video for their song "Tripping", basically shot from footage of when they took a trip to NY. Aw small town kids. The Oohlas- Tripping Download: The Oohlas- The Small Parts If you wanna hear more about them and hear about more, I wrote about the earlier this year . myspace: [...]
