LivePhish.com just posted a free MP3 download from the Mike Gordon Show earlier this year (March 20, 2011) at the Orange Peel in Asheville, NC. Here's the setlist via Phish.net: Mike Gordon @ The Orange Peel, Asheville, NC 3/20/11 Set 1: Morphing Again, What Things Seem, 15 Step -> The Grid -> Makisupa Policeman, Fire [...]

The Orange Peels of Northern California have a new single by the title of "Aether Tide" . "I was up in the middle of the night, and started reading about Einstein's Theory of Relativity when I came across this mention of Aether," Clapp says. Fascinated by the concept, he kept reading and discovered the 200 year old theory has actually experienced a resurgence as of late. "Many people believe Aether Theory explains the holes in modern quantum physics," Clapp says. http://www.theorangepeels.com/
BOOM CHICK | Show Pony [Boom Chick] On their debut album, Moselle Spiller and Frank Hoier go straight to the grimy, messy heart of rock 'n' roll. Spiller's slapstick drumming blends seamlessly with Hoier's blues riffs and simple vocals to create a sound that evokes both Bo Diddley and early White Stripes. (Boom Chick's boy/girl [...]

Having just finished a run of shows that culminated with a stellar performance Feb. 20, at Lincoln Hall , it now appears Tortoise is poised to head back out on the road. Several venue websites have indicated the post-rock group is planning an extensive tour that will take them from coast to coast in June and September of this year. The Troubadour in Los Angeles has the band slotted for a June 12 performance. New York City's [...]

Wow, this anniversary really snuck up on me. Ideally I'd be planning some kind of big, well-thought-out post (well, big and well-thought-out are relative terms but you know what I mean) to officially commemorate four years of blogging, but here it is the big day and I've essentially got nothing! Nothing other than the fact that I'm still here, which I guess counts for something. I could go on about how it's become so much harder to fit it all in and write regularly but that's boring, don't you think? It is what [...]

So I've been sitting on Laurent Bourque 's impressive debut CD for a few months now, trying to come up with the right way to describe it without making it sound like it's a bit on the dull side. You could slide it into the singer/songwriter genre, but that makes it sound boring. You could say it's a rock album, but that conjures up images of bar bands and classic rock, and that's not doing it justice either. And it's certainly hooky enough to be called a pop album, but the sounds are a tad too organic for it [...]

Sounds Superb Vol. 6: FROTH CITY. The world's most insanely over-productive duo In Flagranti are back with another new 12" after what can't be more than two months, continuing the fabulousness of their Sounds Superb edits series. The A1 track is just incredible, really twisted and messy and fiercely groovy. Some Diana Ross vocals loop around some constantly changing and charmingly clashing funky instrumental bits. Yet another essential record, no surprises here. Sana Doris - Pseudo Wind [ buy ] Little London label Light Sounds Dark , who I was [...]
There's so much to say about Plura that I don't even know where to begin. He's the singer in Eldkvarn , a really big Swedish band, he's just released his own cook book, he's writing food reviews for the newspaper City and he's soon to have his own cooking show in TV. So why not practice on Sofia Talvik's Xmas Calendar, after all he doesn't have any Christmas recipes in his book. Learn how Plura makes his own Glühwein, or Glögg as we call it in Swedish. Plura's Glögg recipe: [...]

Thanks to donewaiting, I'm just now discovering The Orange Peels, who these reporters (Web Fingors?) once described as having the "quintessential California sound", that comes from never leaving California , apparently. As a plus for having done the research on them, I've also discovered how to turn those pesky orange peels into candy . 3R 's! I like the Fountains of Wayne-ish song below, despite the fact that it ends with all the notes dispersing and going their own separate ways. [...]
MP3 : We're Gonna Make It I first discovered The Orange Peels when I lived in San Francisco, and since then, whenever I hear their music I think back to that all too brief period of my life. This Bay Area pop outfit has slowly been releasing albums over the years to the point where when they do release an album, it's an actual legitimate surprise (a rare thing in the days of the internet). 2020 has all the hooks and melodies that I come to expect [...]

In their extensive career, The Orange Peels have had many incarnations. Allen Clapp and Jill Pries have been the constants. Likewise, The Orange Peels have hopped labels quite excessively, having an impressive record of releases on pop-oriented labels like Bus Stop, Parasol, and Minty Fresh. For the group's latest, 2020 , they return to Minty Fresh for one of their best albums yet, and their indie-pop styling expands bountifully into power pop. "We're Gonna Make It" packs a punch with big distorted chords and loud drums, yet the band maintains their indie-pop sensibilities [...]
