Shogun Kunitoki is a quartet from Finland whose stated mission is to humanize electronic music. Their tools: thick, buttery organs; modulators ringing to high, they're barely audible to human ears; and oscillators doing whatever oscillators do. Shogun's efforts to put a heart in the chest of electronic music have paid off, because Vinonaamakasio is an elite, cyborg killing machine. This LP is the band's Terminator 2 , basically. From start to finish, Vinonaamakasio has the live and fevered feel of jazz fusion. Its linear approach builds each song up until it [...]
Bands with stated missions; we need more of those. The purpose behind Finland's Shogun Kunitoki is to make electronic music less electronic. Yeah. Well, "regress back to a more human state" is the proper wording, but now we're just splitting hairs. All you need to know is they're an organ-driven quartet with a highly psychedelic appeal. Their sound is certainly a tribute to electronics with it's mind-numbing drones, thickened by oscillators and modulators, but don't expect to here a drum machine robotically thumping away. Shogun's latest LP is Vinonaamakasio , and it's out now. [...]

If you're like me (and if you are, please accept my immediate condolences), at any one given time, you'll cite one particular band as the Nadir of Rock Crappiness. The band will change - at the moment mine is Scouting For Girls, but The Kooks, Kula Shaker and Ocean Colour Scene have all sprung quickly to mind when searching for an example of awful music. In the past, Shed Seven also fulfilled the wispy criteria for inclusion. Their name was [...]

I played at the dinner that A&R Worldwide and the Swedish Consulate held yesterday. (A big thank you to the organizers for having me, it was a great honour!) It was nothing like I had expected. I thought it was going to be more of a networking thing, where people would mingle and talk while I stood in a corner singing. Instead there were a hundred seated people, totally quiet, just looking at me. I got so nervous I thought my knees would shake me off the planet! But I got through it and then Kristin, Peter and [...]

Leaping off the news that Michelle Obama plans to start an organic food garden at the White House, comes an interesting look into organics at Eat Me Daily (seriously one of the best food blogs going). Organics has essentially become an overpriced selling point. It's no secret that to be certified organic you have to pay the USDA piper, or the agencies it oversees. The designation signifies nothing. It's been coopted by the hegemony of giant farming. If you want what organics once promised than you have to buy local from a farmer's market or [...]

Michelle Obama is turning a small corner of the White House backyard into an organic vegetable garden, for use at family meals and also formal dinners. The real reason for the garden , she revealed, will be to educate children about healthful, locally grown fruit and vegetables at time when obesity has become a national concern. Kudos to her. I have nothing bad to say about this and applaud her effort. The Obamas will feed their love of Mexican food with cilantro, tomatilloes and hot [...]

Organizers for Snowside Festival 2009 have announced that they have been forced to cancel the forthcoming event due to poor ticket sales and the weak economy. The festival, which was to take place from March 23-29 in Nassfeld, Austria, was set to see performance by Metronomy and Infadels . A statement posted on the festival's website, snowside.co.uk , read: "It is with deep regret that [...]

I had seen this show tipped since I follow the flickr feed from Daytrotter and there was a picture of her in the studio , which is generally how Johnnie does her characterizations of the acts that flow through the studio in Rock Island. So, it is with certain glee that I'm reporting that Daytrotter has posted her session. According to the date on that picture, she did her session on April 4th, 2008. I saw Nellie in Minneapolis at the Dakota Bar with my wife and super-fan daughter RaeEllen on April 6th- so she recorded this [...]
Elektronisen musiikin pioneeriyhtye Kraftwerk esiintyy Helsingin Suvilahdessa Flow Festivalin päälavalla festivaalin aattona, torstaina 13. elokuuta. Lämmittelyn hoitaa Tiketin mukaan Jori Hulkkosen johtama Acid Symphony Orchestra ja kotimainen elektrolegenda Organ . Kraftwerk esiintyi Suomessa edellisen kerran vuonna 2004 Helsingin Jäähallissa. Ensimmäisen albuminsa vuonna 1970 julkaissut saksalainen Kraftwerk on toiminut suunnannäyttäjänä erityisesti elektronisen musiikin varhaiskehityksessä. Myyttisen saksalaisyhtyeen diskografia sisältää useita yli genrerajojen tunnustettuja klassikkoalbumeita. Erityisesti Man Machine, Autobahn, Trans-Europe Express ja Computer World toimivat edelleen kiintopisteinä yhä useampaan suuntaan versoavan elektronisen musiikin kartalla. Lavalla Kraftwerk pursuaa levynkansistaan [...]

Despite loving their debut Grab That Gun , the fact that guitarist Debora Cohen left The Organ some time ago (presumably before the whole band broke up) completely went over my head. Apparently she took a hiatus from music entirely, not even picking up her instruments for quite a while. She was eventually lured back though and is now playing under the name Lovers Love Haters together with James Thomas, Mar Sellars, Thomas Wykes and James Hoare. What first strikes me when listening to the Lovers Love Haters EP is that Cohen obviously didn't leave her former band because of musical differences. [...]

The economic downturn and high costs have forced organizers for Scotland's Hydro Connect Festival to cancel plans for this years event. The festival, which would have been in its third year, will be postponed until 2010. Organizers for the festival, which takes place in the grounds of Inveraray Castle in Argyll, Scotland, told NME.com that "The fact that Connect's audience is arguably affected more by the credit crunch than some other festival markets, means that it would be foolish for us to expect the growth necessary to help Connect thrive in 2009." [...]

Coachella fans hoping to get their first glimpse at the line-up for the forthcoming Coachella music festival are going to have to wait. Chief festival organizer Paul Tollett has announced that the line-up will NOT be unveiled today. According to the LA Times , Tollett said, " know everybody is going crazy, but we're not stalling, we're still working on the show. Everything we do is in service of the show, not in service of the announcement of the show. Believe me, we're excited to tell [...]

Have you buried anyone through the Berardinelli Forest Hill Memorial Home in Newark recently? Well, probably not. But if you have, that someone may have been exhumed and their tissue may have been harvested for medical use, netting funeral home owner Steven Finley, 45, and his partners "enormous profits." Finley was one of two morticians involved in a ring in which some 1,000 bodies were dug up and dissected for sell-able tissues. Some 1,000 patients received this tissue, which wasn't screened for disease, "for dental implants, knee and hip replacements and other procedures." Those [...]

Hi. This is the first post from me, the up-to-this-point-merely-nomina l second blogger here. Call me Lin. You can see two bylines at the bottom of each post: one will tell you who wrote it. I am going to admit that I'm at a bit of a loss about where I want to go with my writing here. I did a Christmas post that was delayed and then forgotten about due to airline incompetence. It's still out there, and might eventually go up, but I make no promises. I was hoping it would be like a Doctor Who Christmas [...]

I know I know, everyone is doing it. I swore I wouldn't do it this year. But I couldn't resist. I know I'm also a bit late because everyone cranks these things out in November. But anyway here it is, better late than never, my top 21 albums of 2008 is no particular order (besides alphabetical): Artist: Beach House Album: Devotion Song: Gila I still am on my campaign to convince everyone I know that mellow does not equal [...]
