Whenever I see pictures or films that depict early scenes from Appalachia I always feel a kinship with the people shown, even though I can't really be sure whether my family roots stretched that far. But my ancestral history includes lots of folks from Kentucky, Illinois, and Indiana, and Eastern Kentucky is considered to be part of Appalachia so maybe I do have a connection. But to get back to my original point, there's no doubt that seeing those old pictures of the people and their surroundings stirs my own memories from years ago. It all seems so [...]

"Once I had a girl on Rocky Top, Half bear, the other half cat, Wild as a mink but sweet as a soda pop, I still dream about that..." Can imagine, guys. The Osborne Brothers - Rocky Top MP3

Stu Smith, 1936-2009 My dad passed away on Christmas Eve. He was a great guy who always got the most out of life. He loved his old sailboat and his old cabin in the north woods (even though it lacked indoor plumbing). He also loved a cold beer and a good tune. To honor his memory I decided to resurrect this blog and post a few of his favorite songs here. Those of you who have spent time with Stu will remember hearing many of them on the boat, by [...]

There really *is* no place like home - so comforting to once again be under my own roof, with my own family and dog... and my own CD collection! It's taking a bit of time to catch up and get back in the proverbial "swing of things"... so I thought I'd offer up some apples, oranges and a wayward plum as my Star Maker Machine re-entry - hope you've all had a juicy summer... Barenaked Ladies: These Apples [ purchase [...]

Tired of the same old country and rock? Looking for something new? Why not give bluegrass a shot? It's folky without being maudlin. It features great technical playing without sacrificing its downhome soulfulness. It's got those wonderful close harmonies. And it's a truly independent music scene. (There's not much money in bluegrass.) Today's bluegrass sales pitch is promted by a great bluegrass mix over at Stranger Dance . Check it out! It's just about the right size for CD and makes for some nice autumnal listening. My little girl and I [...]

This fall is shaping up to be a great festival season. Thanks to all who wrote to let me know of festivals that I had neglected to include in the Fall Festival List. Our friend and frequent rider, John, reminded us of the Fox Valley Festival. Although I missed the festival, John took some great photos, check them out (link is in the comments to the original post.) Looks like a great time. A very good friend from the Ozarks wrote to tell of a few festivals down his way. When I saw his note [...]

Last week's theme at Star Maker Machine was the fifty states. Going through my "state" songs, I wasn't surprised to see that Texas, California, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee inspired more than their fair share of good songs. Another top tier state, with a deep roster of quality tunes, was Kentucky --the focus of tonight's post. The Bluegrass State has a great musical tradition. Notable Kentuckians include Bill Monroe, Loretta Lynn, and Tom T. Hall . In [...]

Looking back over the last few posts, I realized that some of the songs I posted are recognized by a few states as official State Songs. Every state, with the exception of New Jersey, has at least one song officially designated as a State Song. Most are obscure, forgettable numbers played only at official functions, but several states have adopted more memorable songs. In the Stephen Foster post, I included two songs that have been granted special status by state legislatures, "Old Folks at Home" (Way Down Upon The Swanee River) is the official song of the state [...]

Remember my post from a month ago about Who Invented Country Rock? (If you missed it, here's a mix of some of the highlights .) Well, it turned out to be the most popular post I've ever done, generating lots of comments and e-mails. So now its time to tie up some loose ends based on all the great feedback generated by the first one. EARLY PIONEERS: (1) Jimmie Rodgers Some readers voiced the opinion that elements of [...]

Just another fall day for many, but to college football aficionados and particularly to fans of the University of Tennessee Volunteers and the Alabama Crimson Tide , this day is a holy day. A day by which your season and thus the rest of the year is measured. Sure there are bigger games for both teams, but none that possesses the history and fanfare. This is the game that legends are made of. The series began in 1901 in Birmingham, a game that ended in a [...]
