The wildly energetic Baltimore instrumental math-rock trio Oxes have been mostly inactive over the past few years, but back in the early '00s, they were the shit in their hometown. You can still hear their influence in the wave of spazzy art-punk bands that's continued coming out of the city. And now Oxes are returning with the new 123 Bile Stbudy , their first release since 2005. Below, download "Crunchy Zest," a track from that 123. Read More...

Wild Nothing have a new song out "Golden Haze". Been loving the Gemini LP. Wild Nothing "Golden Haze" Oxes were incredibly entertaining at the Wind-Up space last Saturday. Dem boys r talented. Oxes "Say Something to Bees About The Lion In the Alley" New Les Savy Fav is streaming over at spinner, while your over there listen to new Ray Lamontagne, Darker My Love and a few others. The Oxes , one of Baltimore's favorite guitar rockers, will be playing a rare show this saturday starting at midnight sharp at The Windup Space . Their set at 2008's Whartscape was one of my favorite show's i've been to, so this is definitely a must see if your into their kind of tunes. ( thanks to CP Noise for the heads up ) Oxes - Whartscape 2008 from Justin Blemly on Vimeo .

Fang Island began, oddly enough, as an art school project while the band members were attending the prodigious Rhode Island School of Design (also the foundation for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Les Savvy Fav, Six Finger Satellite, Lightning Bolt and some band called the Talking Heads.) According to guitarist Jason Bartell, the goal was to "make music for people who like music." That is, music without irony that harnesses its uplifting qualities. Just like a classic rock song or classical symphony can stir us emotionally, Fang Island exists to unlock that spirit. Judging by their recently released debut [...]

[Photo by Nate Dorr ] Combining the drummer of Drunkdriver (Jeremy Villalobos), the avant noise guitar work of Zs (Ben Greenberg) and the bass and vocals of Tia Vincent and you have the newest insurgent into the revivalist Brooklyn hardcore scene, Pygmy Shrews . Total disclaimer. I actually just really like this song (check out the chorus at about the 1:40 mark), but my friend Nate Dorr has done a much better job of writing about Pygmy Shrews. So in the [...]
well the france love/hate swingometer lunges around like a spastic drunk on a partick night bus, finally unsteadily stopping firmly vomit flecked in the love half once again. no plasticine-like tent pegs and stroke-inducing lost boys-style dutch kids roaming wild and unfettered and unbeaten this time round. possibly vital to the enjoyable sense-stroking gastronomical hard cock wet [...]

I was only able to make it to Whartscape Saturday, but that was enough to get my impressions of the DIY baltimore festival. So here are my general thoughts: The setup during the day was impressive, three homemade stages with great big speakers and each with a soundboard. When one band ended you moved right to the next stage for the next. Impressively well run, props to Deacon and the Wham City crew. The day shows were more fun because it had more of that fresh feel to it. [...]

Back to 4AD AGAIN for the B-Side of 1987's Number 1 smasheroo Pump Up The Volume . As any fool knows this was the collaboration between AR Kane, Colourbox and CJ Macintosh which really brought sampling into the charts. I'd love to say that I got this single at the time but let's face it, I was a real indie snob. I only bought the 12" after hearing this track, the double A side. M|A|R|R|S - Anitina (The First Time I See She Dance) Apparently (according to youknowwho ) this [...]

Oxes are an instrumental/post-rock band from Baltimore who formed in 1999 and to date have released two full lengths and a number of sold out EPs and singles. They're an important part of Baltimore's 'Rowdy Collective', a group of bands and artists known for causing practical jokes and public disturbances around the city, and indeed the band have a rather perverse sense of humour, for example releasing a split record under the name Oxes/Arab On Radar where the second side of the record was in fact Oxes again impersonating the band Arab On Radar. The crazy FOOLS. [...]

A few weeks ago, Baltimore post-rock band Oxes filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against Old Navy, who is accused of stealing the band's flier design for one of their T-shirts. This is old news , but I saw several of the T-shirts at the store yesterday. The suit was filed because Old Navy refused to pull the shirts, but I was surprised to see them still in stores. Oxes have to been known to pull some crazy stunts, such as a staged protest and "split" with Arab on Radar on which they merely [...]
I have to admit, I am a total sucker for this song. Even though I hear he is a total asshole ... Here is a great instrumental cover; The Oxes - Everlong (live) the original, acoustic Foo Fighters - Everlong (acoustic)
