I have been so blessed this past year in all aspects of my life. I graduated this past June from the University of Toronto with an Honours B.A. I interned at one of Toronto's most prestigious indie labels, Dine Alone Records. I had the opportunity to attend and provide media coverage for CMF 2011 and NXNE 2011. I created a Casting Call video for Much Music which I am so very proud of. It's been a great year - its truly been eye-opening and has resulted in a lot of personal development. I am so thankful to be surrounded by [...]

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart will be playing the Bluebird Theater October 12 for their first ever Denver performance. But before that, they'll be doing a warmup session down Colfax at Twist & Shout at 6 PM. The kids will have a meet and greet afterwards and be signing copies of their last album, "Belong." the Pains of Being Pure at Heart-the Body [mp3]
I missed this video went it first made it rounds on the blogs last month but it's so brilliant that it deserves to be recognized again. First-time music video director Philip Van lovingly films the vignettes of disillusioned grown-ups (played by The Pains of Being Pure At Heart bandmembers) living their monotonous, grown-up lives while their gleeful young dopplegangers enjoy a carefree day at the beach. All the while quick cuts show how the adults' physical actions and movements remind them of the things they did when they were younger. The beautiful cinematography (especially the beach [...]

The night started off with Toronto's own The Paint Movement , however, to my misfortune, the eastbound Queen Street streetcar was really slow and I ended up missing their set. By the time I reached The Opera House, Craft Spells was setting up. I didn't get a chance to check out any of Craft Spells' music prior to the show, but I was pleasantly surprised by their music. Their lo-fi/dream pop sound had me captivated from start to finish. Check out their debut LP, Idle Labor , which was released March of this year. [...]

Posteriormente y [...]

It's beyond pitiful and shameless that I'm only now posting for the first time in 2011. I'm not even going to attempt any excuses. I will soon be posting my "Best Albums of 20103 post, that has been sitting about 90% complete in my draft posts box for 6 months now. Here are some of the albums I have been digging lately, no fancy write-ups but wanted to get them out there anyway. The Antlers - Burst Apart [...]

Early last year, I posted a mix of songs that used the most iconic and recognizable drum beat in pop music history, the Phil Spector-penned / Ronettes-performed “Be My Baby” intro. That led to two more mixes (which we lovingly call "Boom! Boom boom, cha!" after that striking drum sound) bringing the total up to about 60 songs worth of "Be My Baby" beats. Just when I thought I had exhausted the subject a new crop of songs from this year have started popping up using the beat, whether it be from the indie pop stylings of Cults and Pains of Being Pure At Heart or the [...]

Resentment is brewing at Doug Fir . Disappointed whispers alternate with concerned words, and people fidget with their keys while they discuss whether or not the show will continue. On the stage, a crew member hurriedly removes equipment, but the house lights stay down and the bar keeps serving. At the root of this confusion, several members of Twin Shadow 's band have just appeared solemnly before us. One of them took to the microphone, asked the DJ to pause the music, and informed us that they would not be performing tonight. A collective [...]

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - A Teenager In Love Endorphins meet dolphins on the Gulf of Mexico squeaking from their blow-holes waiting for the next wave to sully their salty smiles. Ultraviolet violence comes crashing from the bolted metal arks with staggering javelins poking and prodding at the Earth's sweaty bellybutton. Sarah meets Maker on the rickety staircase of her aunty's Victorian five-bedroom house on Chapel St. Her Cross Country medals sit perched on the wall, never dusted. Her cheques sit in the mailbox too [...]
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have risen to fame in the past year, and deservedly so. I've been watching them ever since they landed on my doorstep in snowy Iceland in 2008 and I helped arrange a one-off gig for a crowd of measly 30 or so people. I remember one reporter not bothering [...]

I’ve been in a really funky mood lately. I can’t seem to listen to the same type of music for more than 4 minutes at a time. Maybe it is this dreary weather that makes my vitamin D levels plummet and causes my attention span to cut in half. I finally have some spare time to write a post (Basil is clearly kicking my ass) and this is what I am currently listening to. Hopefully, by the time I am done posting I will not have changed my mind. So here it goes! Pains of Being [...]

I'd love to be able to say I did this list in one shot, fired from the hip, and came out fearlessly and decisively with my rock solid Top 20 Albums list ready for prime time. The truth is, unfortunately filled with scribbles, crumpled paper balls, wishing I had 25 slots, and a few question marks that will inevitably be answered in a year or two from now when I look back on this list and laugh at myself. I must admit my 2008 list held up pretty well for me over time. Even my 2007 [...]

So what happened in 2009? The economy went south, MdM posting was slacking, and the world turns gospel and hymn. I guess we have our Simon & Garfunkel moment. Animal Collective - My Girls Merriweather Post Pavilion ( Domino ) If you want to know why Animal collective is popular, then look no further than early american hymn. This is why so many people like them despite the strange blurry recording, while to others the sound simply doesn't compute. The danceable rhythm section is just added side attraction. If [...]

In recent years the crowd that is claiming "the album is dead" has grown louder and louder. We couldn't disagree more. As more and more people turn to iTunes and the Hype Machine to download the latest and greatest singles, we have stuck to the traditional album listening and found that there are still some truly great records being made these days. For most of this year we have been inundated by bands breaking into the world, mainstream artists trying to recapture their former glory, and indie rock "superstars" growing into their own, it has been exciting and fun and [...]

Photo/illustration by David Greenwald Share All due apologies to Animal Collective, Mandy Moore really brought it in the singles department this year.
