Thanks to Paramount Pictures and Onlinefire , we're giving away a selection of 'True Grit' DVDs, Original Soundtracks (OSTs) and paperback novelisations of the film. The Coen Brothers updated Western comes out on DVD and Blu-Ray today in the UK, and details of how to win the prizes are below. 'True Grit' (starring Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon ) had a critically acclaimed theatrical run - including a positive review from our very own Matthew Paskins , one [...]
Right now, publishing houses and librarians across the country are thinking to themselves, "oh shit that was faster than expected," after it was revealed that sales of e-books bested both paperback and hardcover sales for the first time. The tidal shift occurred in February. E-book sales totaled $90.3 million in February, up 202% compared to the same month a year earlier, according to a study from the Association of American Publishers. That put e-books at No. 1 "among all categories of trade publishing" that month - the first time e-books have beaten [...]

Formed in 2001, The Paperbacks have operated consistently and quietly from their home base in Winnipeg, Canada, gathering a dedicated following and building up an impressive catalogue of songs and accomplishments. Singer/guitarist Doug McLean, whose previous groups (beloved pop-punkers The Bonaduces and the more politically-oriented Painted Thin) had dissolved almost simultaneously in 2000, founded The Paperbacks with members of both those projects: bassist Jaret McNabb, drummer Jack Jonasson and guitarist Mike McKenzie. It was a step into slightly unknown territory; though the signature lyrical style of McLean remained, the harder, sloppier edges of both the previous bands [...]

Canada's The Paperbacks have been providing us with amazing tunes since back in 2003, crafting lush melodies with their careful guitar work. Their most recent album Lit From Within is a double record, which is a substantial number for any release. I mean, if you're looking for a bad song, you might find one, but odds are, with a collection like this, you'll find much more hits. Such is the latest single from the band, "Perpetual Autumn." We know you'll love this one. Download: The [...]
Far from using Lit From Within as an opportunity to exploit the freedoms and expectations of the classic double-album format, the Paperbacks have basically just made the same album that they always make, only twice as big. Despite a career now spanning three decades and as many bands, Doug McLean basically does one kind of song and generally does it very well. His main '90s gig, the Bonaduces (he did simultaneous duty in Painted Thin), made fast, buzzing punk-pop songs in what might have been easily described as a prototypically scrappy Ramones/Buzzcocks mode, were it not for [...]

Kicking off the first big week of album releases in 2010, we have Vampire Weekend's highly anticipated sophomore record, Contra . From my few listens, the band still retains that signature African sound from their debut. But, I've never been too high on these guys in the first place, so maybe a more keen listener will notice any new flourishes with this one. Also out this week is Owen Pallett's Heartland , which sees the singer/songwriter disposing of his long-time Final Fantasy moniker. I think this change should have [...]

The Paperbacks call Winnipeg, Canada their home. And on January 12th they release their 32-song double disc Lit From Within on Parliament Of Trees . These two songs showcase the band's indie-rock breadth although the band can succumb to the typical blogrock cliches. They often rise above; however asking us to engage with 32 songs is a tad demanding. Slow Learners - The Paperbacks Make Art - The Paperbacks
(photo:myspace.com) Back in 2007, The Paperbacks released a cool little disc called An Illusion Against Death that helped shine a light on the great music scene in Manitoba beyond the Weakerthans. Interestingly enough, Jon K. Samson (main Weatherthan) produced that album, which may be one reason why so many compared the two band's sound. After a series of lineup changes, The Paperbacks have settled on a roster and spent the better part of the last year working on a 32-song double album opus, Lit From [...]

Rikers Learn More We have been reading those damn paperbacks again, lashings of time consuming literature, gloriously preaching substance and knowledge. ` Powder ` by Kevin Sampson is a gripping tale of a fictional Indie band plausibly named The Grams and the ugly elements a hedonistic music business can throw in your general direction. Contains many lines of cocaine, attitude, blowjobs and some good old fashioned Rock N Roll. Also currently thumbing through an early seventies Jimi Hendrix biography by his close friend and musical collaborator Curtis Knight , ingeniously titled ` [...]

The paperback edition of Black Postcards will be published on the 28th April and is currently availbale to pre-order from Amazon (US) The cover features a more zoomed out picture of the one on the hardback edition and has a quote from Liz Phair's review from the New York Times . It also appears that the book is now simply "a memoir" rather than "a rock and roll romance." I trust that it will also have that mistake fixed!

Happy Canada Day, folks! I hope that from mari usque ad mare, you're having a pleasant holiday (unless of course your employer gave you yesterday off and is making you work today) and enjoying the first fruits of summer. I started my celebrations early with another 4 For the Weekend Canada Special in Saturday's post, but thought it would be wholly appropriate to use today's post to highlight a couple of great Canadian artists on a couple of great Canadian labels that you may not yet be familiar with. [...]

myspace A few months ago, Winnipeg's The Details started getting hit with the "sounds like the Weakerthans" label (which is one of the biggest compliments a Canadian band can get), and while at times the Manitoba band did tip their caps to the Canadian indie anti-icons , their record was that of a young band still searching for inspiration and the sound they want to play. That's not to take anything away from the band, it's just part of the maturation process and I think that when they get it all put together [...]
Listening: 1. Mark David Ashworth - Sometimes the simplest formula is the most appealing. Acoustic guitar, sparse electronics, and thoughtful melodies, MDA has it all. Listen to : Elevator Battle Distance ( mp3 ) 2. Plugs - When you stare at numbers all day they all start to look familiar. Listening to promos all evening can do the same for songs. However, this track jumped out at me today, and maybe you will enjoy it as well. Listen to: That Number ( mp3 ) 3. The [...]
