Its kind of bizarre how little I remember about seeing the Parkas last night. Could be because I'm completely exhausted right now or b/c I'm a little drunk, its impossible to say, really. But, what I do remember is this: Being convinced to make the drive to see my classmate Mike Brown (pictured far right) and listening to their new(est) record Put Your Head in the Lions Mouth on the way down. Having no idea how long it would take to get to Hamilton. [...]

It's been a pretty amazing year for music around the UK, and following on from my top 10 of 2007 , here is my top 10 of 2008. 10 - Viva Stereo - Roar Lion Roar You've probably not heard much about this Scottish collective. However, their third album was a surprise favourite for me - anthemic, accessible, slightly My Bloody Valentine and yet still so gorgeous. Read more about Viva Stereo here . Favourite: Knee High Boots . [...]
Things to think about when you vote on Tuesday: "Dead people don't detox." There are approximately 4,700 injection-drug users (PDF) in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Vancouver Coastal Health has 316 detox beds (PDF). So even if everybody woke up tomorrow morning ready to take that step toward recovery, the support isn't there for them all. In the meantime, we as a society can do something to reduce the harm (PDF) drug addiction creates for both addicts and the public. In Vancouver, we have a Supervised Injection Site [...]
On my old site, I posted an unbeatles A to Z, so this is kind of an update. But it's got some new stuff, and a zip file of every savefile track. Dig it. A is for amalgam. A fancy way of saying mash up. Imagine a Walk on the Wild Side-Party Party. B is for Band On The Run (Paul McCartney & Wings)-Foo Fighters . B is also for Badge (Cream)-The Subliminal Criminals . This song was actually co-written by George Harrison. [...]

90 degrees outside... 80 degrees inside... so there's really no call for a parka, coat, jacket, poncho, or any other variety of outerwear today. But I guess we'll make an exception for the Scottish band that calls itself PARKA (come to think of it, we already dealt with the band that calls itself MY MORNING JACKET a couple weeks ago). Parka (the band) has an album out called ATTACK OF THE HUNDRED YARD HARDMAN , which sounds like the title [...]

It's not that I have nothing to say lately, it's just that I've been saying it in other ways. Been reading and writing. In the last week or so I've read three full novels, worked on my masterpiece(meal) and started a short story that I'm really excited about. Believe it or not, but it was inspired (sorta) by my weekend viewing of Balls of Fury . Not really, more like inspired by the credits. I also saw Persepolis , which I liked about million times more (Nicole says she liked it even more than she liked Juno [...]

The Internet around here has been pretty bad over the last few weeks. I finally figured out it was the router after changing all my cables and power bars. But I havn`t had any luck with the damn routers either (I`ve gone threw 3 over the last few weeks) Hopefully I have one that works now. I decided it would be in my best interest to drop a few extra $$ and go with the Linksys Wireless N Router.....Time will only tell if it will be our last.... I also won an [...]

10 Slate has a terrific piece on how the Yule log came to television . 9 Blink-182's "I Won't Be Home For Christmas" is up on their MySpace page . The song was originally the B-side of the "Josie (Everything's Gonna Be Fine)" single. 8 Though Hanukkah... 10 Slate has a terrific piece on how the Yule log came to television . [...]

"We used to have such an organized party," sings Michael Brown at the opening of this track from the Parkas' second full-length album Put Your Head in the Lion's Mouth . It's a pretty frenetic song that sometimes seems like it's been put together of scraps from other songs. There are several times where Brown shouts out what you'd think would be a recurring chorus, but great lines like "Now this is fighting!" (which happens to be the name of the Parkas' first album ) only happen once and then they're gone. There's a [...]

P arkas are one of those rare bands that takes its cues from the loud and fuzzed-out garage rock of yesteryear but manages to sound anything but derivative. Fusing the bluesy guitar licks and soulfully ragged vocals of bands like the Stones or the Mats with the more modern roots sensibilities of bands like Big Buildings, their latest album Put Your Head In The Lion's Mouth proves that good old-fashioned rock and roll doesn't need to be complicated to be great. It just needs to rock and/or roll. From start to finish Put [...]

The Scottish scene, in my estimation, has always been underrated when viewed as a whole. The volume of great popular (keep in mind, dancey) music up there should be noted -- from classic new wave bands like Altered Images, Fiction Factory and Simple Minds to today's noisemakers Franz Ferdinand, Belle & Sebastian and POCKETROCK fave Calvin Harris. That said, if having fun is anywhere on your agenda this fall, then take note of a peppy, charismatic London-by-way-of-Glasgow band named Parka ; and a particularly cheeky tune labelled "Hoxton Hair" off of their latest EP "If [...]

Posted by Andrew: Hello loyal TFD readers. Meet Toronto's The Parkas . In June they issued their "poppy-as-a-mofo" sophomore record Put Your Head In The Lion's Mouth , and in August it found it's way onto my iPod and the rest was history. I had never even heard of the band when I started listening to it, and it blew me away right from the get go. Straight up rock n roll. Catchy as all heck. Like Lindsay Lohan finding a bag of blow under her car seat [...]

Two Hours Traffic / Little Jabs ( Bumstead ) I don't actually believe there exist enough vehicles in Charlottetown, PEI to create traffic dense enough to delay anyone for two hours. And despite their name, Two Hours Traffic don't offer much evidence that they know first-hand the tedium of gridlock, what with having turned out a record chock full of top-down, joyriding, sing-along power-pop goodness such as Little Jabs , their second album. Produced by Joel Plaskett, a man who knows [...]

It was a very exciting weekend. Not as exciting as the forever unchronicled Canada Day Long Weekend, but whatev. The big thing is that Nicole came back from Saskatchewan on Sunday, putting an end to my eight-day-long diet of ketchup chips & Pilsner. But what might be more exciting to you, dear readers, is that between Friday afternoon and Sunday night I got a bunch of new music. On Friday, I went downtown to the big H uman M eat V acuum to use a birthday giftcard. As mentioned in previous post, I spent a lot of [...]

So I got an advance copy of the Parkas new album Put Your Head In The Lions Mouth ...well not too advance (the release date is June 19)....its one of those albums that I enjoy, but I`m afraid no one will hear it...which totally sucks. I hear a lil bit of Superfriendz on a few tracks, which is really kool...So please buy this album HERE ...You won`t regret it...CN Parkas play in London July 14th @ Alex P. Keaton. [...]

As rain changes to sun and the mountains finally creep out from behind the four month cover of clouds, I find myself looking back into my collection for some classic Canadian rock. No tricks, just licks. Windows rolled down, slapping the steering wheel slightly off time; that's the sounds that fill my summer drives. Luckily, the new Parkas record - Put Your Head in the Lion's Mouth - arrived just in time. With the help of Dale Morningstar (who's helped turn the dials for some of the Canadian artists whose music represents the spirit [...]
