Sweden: a country with no shortage of musical talent. Widely successful acts such as ABBA, Roxette, Ace of Base, Opeth, the Cardigans, Robyn and Swedish House Mafia have reminded us time and again that it has a music scene worthy of attention. Like any other country's music scene, it also consists of its artists whose fan base is predominantly located within the country. But that in itself is often only a matter of time. One such Swedish group that's been gathering attention is indie rock band The Perishers. The band—formed in the late '90s and fronted by [...]
Hook-filled guitar-based indie-rock and power-pop If the Brill Building had lasted into the twenty-first century, one could only hope they'd be turning out pieces of pop perfection like the Perishers' "Spectre." The song builds from a lovely guitar riff, gently strummed acoustics and an infectious vocal melody, and by time the drummer kicks in with Hal Blaine's iconic "Be My Baby" beat, the strums have gained force, the bass line has grown insistent and the guitar solo chimes with simple authority. The song's lyrics are slight but potent, particularly the line "I have always [...]
I don't know about you, but I personally have never been too great at relationships. For whatever reason, things have just never worked out long term for me. Now don't get me wrong, I've had my fair share of "relationships" and/or "flings," if you will, but I always find myself bored sometime within the first couple of months. I'm really not too bothered by this fact; however, we all know that it's nice to have someone to keep us warm at night every now and then. When I get into one of those "I really need a man" [...]
The Perishers frontman Ola Klüft has relocated to my neck of the woods (sort of... Vancouver BC) and will be releasing a solo album under the name A Lanky Swede . Hear a few tunes at myspace: http://www.myspace.com/alankys wede

This has been a hard several weeks, and while The Steam Co. isn't always outwardly political in our preachings (though in music, can you be neutral?), we are in shock and in sadness for the LGBT struggle that continues in our country and has culminated in young lives being lost. We hope you all will take a minute to reach out to anyone you know who is struggling with accepting their sexuality, and are so happy knowing that many of you have. Alyssa and I didn't always live in liberal hubs of the U.S., and its imperative for those suffering [...]

Toni Halliday. An all too familiar name which evokes many wonderful memories centered around some of the finest electronic rock music I've had the fortune of hearing. For those not in the know, Ms. Halliday was the lead singer of the seminal band, Curve. A blitzkrieg of noise with a voice that could caress and scare the living daylights out of you in the same song. While Halliday and her partner-in-crime, Dean Garcia, went their seperate ways not long ago. I, along with many fans feared this was the last we might hear of her. Enter Chatelaine! Toni Halliday is [...]

I've been quite lazy in my posting around here lately. I've been shooting down idea after idea in my head, until something magical just kinda fell into my lap. Before I just endlessly spill the details of my personal life, let me just get right into why I'm back and what I'm bringing with me. Last fall I had this idea of making weekly mix-CD's; some for myself and some for others, but at least one a week. The plan kinda fell through after only a month and a half, but I did get a great mix or two out [...]

Califone Heron King Blues (Perishable, 2004) On Heron King Blues , Tim Rutili and co.'s bluesy folk relics have been slowly contorted from their comfortable Americana roots into something murky and slightly disturbing, but still warm with the heat of its decaying carcass. It's Califone decomposing, beautifully. -Thistle

As promised, here is the official soundtrack of the 4th season of Grey's Anatomy. Other than Grey's Anatomy, other hit shows like Gossip Girl, Chuck, Fringe, Glee, Dollhouse, One Tree Hill, Ugly Betty, House and many more. You've got to give a hand to the music supervisors of these shows for their success. The music is not perfect, but it's certainly entertaining. The show goes mostly for indie favorites like The National, Ingrid Michaelson, The Gossip, Tegan and Sara, The Bird and the Bee, Bon Iver, Feist, Goldfrapp, Rilo Kiley, Frightened Rabbit, The Republic Tigers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and more. [...]

I first heard of The Perishers via Veronica Mars. The prom dance scene , no less. I suppose to be featured as the prom theme is no small feat. Ask The Sundays . Anyways, that song is 'Sway', from their 2003 album 'Let There Be Morning' , many songs of which still sound lovely to this day. I guess back then, they were like the Swedish answer to Aqualung, which in turn was like the British answer to Coldplay. A lot has happened since 2003. Coldplay went on to become the new "biggest band in [...]

Well I did it. I waited `til after Thanksgiving to post my Christmas mix. So far a lot of these songs are from last year (or years past), hell I even recycled the photo. I'll do my best to update this mix as new songs appear. I love these songs. They are some of the best Christmas songs you're likely to hear and for a large part they are ones I've dug up first. So Enjoy and Merry Christmas (three weeks early). P.S. I'm so low tech it's not even funny so if someone wants to create a [...]

(design by Joe) So the big news around these parts: Coconut Joe is taking early retirement from his 9-5, packing up his Weber mando and moving from Princeton to Minnesota. In honor of that, I have compiled a punch of songs with "over" in the title – as his job, as this chapter in his life is over. As for Coconut & The Duke , we will continue to work on our debut album " In The Bamboo Forests Of Pennsylvania " in a Postal Service type way. Instead of mailing tapes back [...]

Maybe I'd underestimated this Swedish band, first impressions had me bracketing them in a mainstream setting. The more I listened, however, the more I realised they had a deeper creative spark that could operate just as capably with an alternative audience. 'My Heart' comes from their second last LP 'Let There Be Morning' and has already featured on a car advert. Didn't do the Velvet Underground

I was watching the movie, London , while curled up on the couch and really enjoyed this song that was played near the end. The Perishers - Nothing Like You and I from Let There Be Morning Now I'm off to start making a trifle, and pick up my old friend Sara to go last minute holiday shopping. Happy Holidays, everybody! :-D

Hey there. There's not a lot new here, although I will update this post as new songs are released for the 2007 season. But what's here is pretty top notch; highlights include incredibly the high notes hit by Montt Mardie on "I Wish Every Day...", the Beach Boys surf-pop of Irene, Hello Saferide's instant Christmas classic "I Pod Christmas", Parker Lewis odd little indie pop dittie "X-mas Carols NYC", and the strange electronic rendering of The Knife's "Christmas Reindeer". P.S. Check out the Songs:Illinois Christmas Mix if you're at all interested in great, off-the-beaten-path [...]
