The Perms are a Winnipeg trio fronted by Shane Smith (bass, vocals) and assisted by Chad Smith (guitar, vocals) and John Huver (drums). It was clear that for the 5th album the band wanted a wilder atmosphere in the studio while keeping those power pop hooks intact. Starting with the anthemic "High School," it plays a bit like Weezer, Blink 182 or Bowling For Soup on a nostalgic trip, singing " It's alright if we party every night, cause tonight will last forever and we're never gonna die. " On "Make It Through" Chad's vocal in the chorus screams out over the [...]
The Jets are back and The Perms have a new record. Things are looking up in Winnipeg!

Perhaps it's because they enjoy a unique access to the use of human linguistics or perhaps it's simply because our society has placed immense power on words in general, but vocals – more specifically lyrics – seem to carry an unrivaled weight in a song. Certainly more central than drum rhythms or bass lines and often drawing more attention than even the catchiest of guitar riffs, the message of a song rarely goes without at least some ounce of recognition. It's for this reason that Sophia Nights, the 5 th full-length release from Canadian power-pop rockers, The [...]

Power pop from the Great White North Americans might be surprised to learn that the intersection of "Winnipeg, Manitoba," and "rock stars" yields no less than the Guess Who, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Crash Test Dummies, and Neil Young. The Perms have been plugging away on the Winnipeg scene since 1997, and their fifth album is a hook-filled collection, heavy on the guitar, bass, drums and harmonies. The vocals range from a low-register that suggests the Smithereens' Pat DiNizio to the keening edginess of the La's Lee Mavers; fans of Sloan, Weezer, Teenage Fanclub and Velvet [...]

Not sure what's going on with Curtis but he sported this new look on the red carpet for the premier of his Things Fall Apart movie. I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it's for another movie role because this is definitely not a good look for a guy worth half a billion. Any 50 Cent fans disagree? via Rap-Up

California and beautiful weather. Pool parties and bikinis. Perms and O.Gs. DJ Quik and Suga Free . When each of these pairs are united, the respective outcome of their solo input is always heightened. So, with all of those combos present and in full effect for Mr. Blake's latest Red-Bull-backed visual from The Book Of David , you can expect "Nobody" would be left let down. Especially not fans, who now have visual reinforcement to their hopes Street Gospel 2 might be up a silk sleeve, somewhere there in [...]

It's days like today and songs like High School High that make me want to do something impulsive and irrational. Just something about sun and cool breeze after a winter of freezing my ass off; let's just say that I find myself driving past car dealerships for no apparent reason, paying particular attention to the convertibles on the lot. I have a feeling that the fellas in The Perms feel my pain. After all, Winnipeg is even further north, so this trio likely has at least a few more [...]

Hook-heavy Winnipeg indie power pop band The Perms have put together a fun video for their track "Running Away". Check it out and try to get the song out of your head afterwards: The Perms' website The Perms' Myspace
The Perms ' new video for their track Running Away may look like they have taken a cue from the 70's era and those live LIVE performances we used to see, but their sound says otherwise. The powerpop, indie and rock fusion makes for a catchy sound. Check it! Buy their music over at Insound

Not so long ago, I gave a succinct nod - uncharacteristic, indeed, but true nonetheless - to The Perms most recent single Give Me All Your Lovin' . An enjoyable nugget of bouncing melodic rock, it was enough to make me want to listen to the album from whence it came. 'Keeps You Up When You're Down' duly arrived on my desk and I've had a scorching summer week to digest the whole thing. [...]

Lame, Pulp Fiction-(un)inspired joke refs aside, it's time to make a dent in the electronic stack of music that has developed over here. It's diverse and tasty in places, so let's jump into the undergrowth and see what lurks within............. First out of the hat pop Melbourne's appropriately monickered Ouch My Face . Their eponymous debut EP wastes little time [...]
