I've said it before: no other series on this blog is as much fun to put together than the Covered With Soul compilations. And I've yet a few mixes in store. There are have been a couple of pretty radical reworkings of songs; Maxine Weldon 's interpretation of George Gershwin's I'll Build A Stairway To Paradise (best known, perhaps, as Georges Guetary's showstopper in the An American In Paris musical) is one of them. On the other hand, if the version of Spirit In The Sky by The Stovall Sisters has [...]

John Crowell was one of many that took in the entire MPMF weekend, here are some of his thoughts and photos from Friday and Saturday... The biggest complaint I've heard from people attending MidPoint Music Festival this year is actually one of the most encouraging things about it: the festival was packed. Shows were crammed with people, causing many venues to reach capacity night after night. Outside the venues, too, streets were filled with concert-goers. They weren't there for the free Busken donuts, [...]

In 1990 Adam Ant released his 4th solo album, Manners and Physique. The album yielded a top 20 single in Room at the Top. Then in 1991 Ant returned to the studio and recorded his fifth album for a planned release in 92 or 93. MCA, however, was a little ticked that Manners and Physique didn't achieve gold status and the label decided to drop Ant from their label after hearing the new album. Apparently MCA wasn't keen on Adam's dance oriented sound and wanted stuff that sounded like Goody Two Shoes. The new album was titled [...]

Do you know about Kid Inquisitive? JESSE is my guest on 3-11-11 over at Haight & Soul Happy Hour which I run every Friday. Let me tell you, the man has records... I mean THE MAN HAS RECORDS. Deep tunes in a variety of genres. He always blows my mind when he plays vinyl. If you have free time, we suggest you check out SOUL PERSUASION where you can keep up to date with Jesse and his collection. Below is his latest live mix (recorded on 2-2-11) which we recommend. Another winner c/o of LA guitar band Funeral Party. "Postcards of Persuasion" is prob a hit on rock radio right now (if it still exists?!1), it def would've been one five years ago (danceable rhythms, delayed guitars, enough a pop hook to stick in your head). Can these guys open for Interpol or The Stills? or Editors? Will MTV 2 feature their vid on "Subterranean"? Are they a band to watch? Haha, anyway, the track is ace. Get into it. Funeral Party - Postcards of Persuasion Purchase [...]
The star creator and all around musical god recently admitted that he is mainly a self-educated man and that school has been a rather futile experience for him. Simon Cowell had this to say on the matter: "All my life I had to teach myself. I never really had a proper education. I wasn't born with any skill. I didn't learn anything from school. Mainly, I trust my instincts because I have very broad tastes. I genuinely believe that if I like something, other people are going to like it as well." And if they don't, he'll find a way [...]

The first Christmas soul mix was very popular. Thank you to all the kind people who took the time to say nice things about it (and about my efforts here in general). Comments are always appreciated. As I pointed out in the blurb for the first mix, I held back a lot of great stuff for the follow-up. So this one might be even better than the first compilation. You be the judge of that. Be advised that in this batch are a couple of tracks that might not appeal to your mother: Rufus Thomas (Carla's [...]

To those who thought the Beatles couldn't be covered, I am offering a sampler of tracks - one representing each album - in the hope that it might win you over to the virtues of this downloadable 15-album collection of cover versions! From Sandie Shaw to Lord Sitar, from Ruben Blades to Swan Arcade, this CD-length collection hints at the wonderful range of covers available on each album. NOTE: Skip the following preamble if you have no objection [...]

It's a good week to be a florist. Valentine's Day is around the corner and roses are selling like a product that actually has some practical value. No, I never quite saw the romance in a present that will make you bleed if you hold it the wrong way. I think this is why no one ever gives me roses. That and the fact that I'm a guy.Sexton Blake - Rose Parade (Elliott Smith)You don't forget the
The Telegraph printed a story the other day that atheists are more successful at online dating than our religious counterparts. Unable to concede absolutely anything that might paint a non-believer in a slightly favourable light, 1 they've subsequently got their Religion Editor, the blessed and benighted George Pitcher (right), to redress the balance by suicide-bombing logic on behalf of insecure deities everywhere. When i first saw the title ("Atheists are no good in bed") i jokingly thought "perhaps his argument will be based solely on the [...]

I didn't really think through how I was gonna do this series of blog posts: Warners released about 34 of these LP samplers between 1969 and 1980, sometimes springing three or four of 'em in one year. I don't have all of them, so maybe I will try and survey them year by year. After the success of the first three samplers in 1969 (there was a single-disc collection we didn't mention last time), Warners kept goin' in the new decade with The Big Ball and Schlagers! The label called these [...]
Sweet words from Left of the dial : Sofia Talvik- Jonestown (review) While I was running around like an eight-year-old in a Toys R Us in Grant Park, Chicago this past August at Lollapalooza, ambience was the farthest musical feature from my mind. I wanted Bloc Party. I wanted the Go! Team. I wanted to dance and shout and make a scene. But, contrary to my initial plans, the first morning of the show had me swaying in front of the Citi stage to the quiet croon [...]

Since I've started torrenting, my CD collection has exploded, mostly pristine live recordings I never imagined I'd own. The premier live music torrent site has got to be Dime A Dozen . Tapers and bootleggers old and new are crawling out of the woodwork and posting their stuff there. If you've got a high-speed connection, you need to get BitTorrent , and have patience enough to get an account at Dime (capped at 100,000, always booting those who can't share). I've been downloading a few things for stocking stuffers and decided this would be the perfect time to [...]
