I have been working on a party mix for Halloween, for no reason other than I just like to do that kind of thing. It currently consists of 132 songs, and I am trying to wittle it down but it seems like every time I take one out, I put another one in. The selection includes not just obvious must-haves like Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" and Oingo Boingo's "Dead Man's Party;" but also things that just sound kind of weird or spooky, like Caribou's "Irene" and Lindsey Buckingham's "Slow Dancing." Remixes are well-represented with examples like [...]

Another day, another great Christmas show announced in Glasgow. This time it's the brilliantly bonkers Phantom Band, they will play the Arches in Glasgow on Saturday the 12 th of December. Support on the evening comes from Lord Cut Glass , which pretty makes it a no- brainer , having been blown away by them earlier in the week this promises to be one of the best gigs you'll see all year. Tickets are on sale now here . The Phantom Band-Left Hand Wave (Marc Riley session) Lord Cut [...]

If you had the chance to dream up your fantasy bill for a gig, then what would you choose? At this moment in time I'd love to see Frightened Rabbit and the Phantom Band play on the same bill. My fairy godmother must have been listening as the two are teaming up for a mini Scottish tour in November and December. Here's the dates announced so far (by announced I mean stolen from the Phantom Bands Myspace ) 28 th Nov - Tolbooth , Stirling 29 th [...]

Sente: The Phantom Band - Folk song oblivion [...]

Thankfully the rumours that Oran Mor was due to close proved not come of anything, and now they've announced some great gigs the next couple of months. September 18th Zoey Van Goey, tickets 23rd The Phantom Band, tickets October 3rd Unkle Bob, tickets

[ via ] Psychologists say you should limit yourself to one or, at most, two "traumatic" events at a single time. These include the classics (divorce, moving, and death) along with more modern variants (usually centered around the increasing demands and disappearing boundaries between our work and non-work lives). Currently I'm undergoing four, possibly five if you count the general confusion I have in what my exact aims for FRS are in regards to content, posting schedule, and, well, pretty much everything. Time is tight and stress is high, a volatile combination even [...]

The FOUND Toad Session became a little overwhelming last week, especially when the upload gremlins struck some time around midnight on Friday and pig-fucking, baby-abducting bloody Vimeo simply refused to upload anything I sent. I am not sure whether to blame them or Virgin fucking Media, who do our broadband, and whose connection simply ground to a fucking halt the second I tried to upload anything at all. Useless fuckers. Consequently, after six consecutive nights which lasted until around four or five in the morning, I am taking this week almost entirely off, not least to spend some [...]

Bugger me, not since the days of following Symposium around the country, (yes Symposium, got a problem with that?!) have I felt any sort of urge to go to Aberdeen, until now that is. As part of this years Sound, the North Easts new-ish Festival, Chemikal Underground are having a bit of a shin-dig up at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen. This very special show will feature The Phantom Band Emma Pollock Aidan Moffat Martin John Henry (ex-De Rosa) [...]
While The Kinks Ray Davies may have had the tenacity to sing in a vernacular voice old those years ago, spawning generations of English bands singing in their own accents - The Scots haven’t been as forthcoming in their love to express their lyrics through a native voice: up until now that is. My Latest Novel , like many of their Scottish contemporaries (Glasvegas, The Twilight Sad, Frightened Rabbit, The Phantom Band) are wearing tartan swagger with pride on their sleeves. You can be sure that Death and Entrances won’t be played at beach [...]

So August is almost upon us. Traditionally - or at least for as long as I’ve been living here - most bands and promoters in Edinburgh tend to just take the month off and make way for the festival. It’s a bit of a monolith. Every available venue (and most non-venue) space is booked up months in advance, and with so much happening every single day in August, it becomes rather difficult for smaller operations putting on shows. Of course there are exceptions – a lot of the bigger clubs just keep on trucking, and nights like Acoustic Edinburgh embrace [...]

It's July 1st, the mid-point of the year, a good time to reflect on what we've been offered musically so far in 2009. There's been some stonkers like Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective and Fever Ray but you know about them already. I've listed my ten obvious favourite records of the year so far and then fifteen overlooked ones (with MP3s) you should definitely check out. Obviously "overlooked" is not exact science but generally, these are records you would like to see get more attention in the remaining six months of the year. I left out a couple of [...]
It's been another insane week and a half of work. I've only been sleeping about 4 hours per night, and it feels like for about 16 of the other 20, I'm working. But, thankfully, I was able to get out a bit this past weekend, with my main motivation for non-productivity being the US soccer team's run to the finals on the Confederations Cup. Blowing a 2-0 lead against Brazil in the final was painful, but they were clearly the better team, especially in the second half, as it should be, when futebol is the national religion. In honor of [...]

Lord Cut-Glass Genre: Indie From: Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom Sometimes bashful, occasionally imbued with curmudgeonly bluster, and yet always lifted by humorous life learned truisms, Lord Cut-Glass (former Delgado Alun Woodward) strikes a dashing figure of musically inventive bravado. Galloping percussion, waltzes and marches, promenades of male and female harmony, delicate and serene creations punctuated by casual [...]

In a first for this blog I have an interview!! well not quite an interview, more a Q&A, but hey that's even better as an interview would mean that I would have to type the whole thing up, and hey to be honest I am lazy and that would have taken me ages to do. Our unsuspecting victims are none other than the Phantom Band (I guess you worked that out from the title though), who have released one of my favourite albums of this year (buy it FFS ) they have very kindly taken the time out to [...]
