Howdy folks & apologies for (a) busting in on Mr. Toad's podcast post, & (b) being late. Again. There's a very good reason for that, namely I've been busting my orbs getting stuff & nonsense sorted out ready for our new station premiere — which, frustratingly, I still can't say anything about. All I can say is it's happening very soon indeed. One of the things I've been doing, sleeplessly, for the past week, is giving TWRHQ a bit of a tart up creating & adding new graphics, links, & [...]
Chemikal Underground The Phantom Band are apparently named because they couldn't decide on a name. The group cycled through handles of such varying crappiness as Robert Redford, Son Of and Wooden Trees before settling on their current insubstantial moniker. And this chronic indecisiveness seems to extend to their music, too. They describe their chosen genre as 'Proto-Robofolk', which is not very useful. Perhaps as a consequence of this, critics writing about the group have tended to become hopelessly embroiled in games of spot-the-influence. Krautrock, Scottish folk and the American southwest are, not [...]

I've managed to be relatively productive yesterday and today so far, so I'm deciding (foolishly) to put up some music I've had kicking around my inbox for a while, despite the fact that I should be working on papers and all that jazz. One of the few good things I know of to come out of New Jersey (the others being my roommate and a few friends), Thing-One crank out fun, dancey rock, with really catchy and creative, if at times bizarre, lyrics. A couple of their songs have been in heavy rotation for me lately. [...]

Can't beat a bit of good hyperbole: The Phantom Band have just released debut 'Checkmate Savage' on Chemikal Underground records ; 'Nick Cave meets Neu! in a mossy cave. Violent Femmes recording an acoustic Super Furry Animals. Perhaps the more beat savvy side of The Beta Band taking downers with Belle and Sebastian even'. They're just about to embark on a UK tour, check their Myspace page for details. The Phantom Band- Burial Sounds (Download) More from the Deerhunter collective; Guitarist Lockett Pundt [...]

Often the hearts of men and women are stirred, as likewise they are soothed in their sorrows more by example than by words. And therefore, because I too I have known some consolation from speech had with one who was a witness thereof, am I now minded to write of the sufferings which have sprung out of my misfortunes, for the eyes of one who, though absent, is of himself ever a consoler. This I do so that, in comparing your sorrows with mine, you may discover that yours are in truth nought, or at the most but of small [...]

Left Hand Wave - The Phantom Band Crocodile - The Phantom Band I've been noticing an interesting trend in my listening tastes these days: I only like indie rock from Scotland. It's the accents, man. They just really get to me. Also: It helps if at least a member or two have beards. Really, this trend only began a few months ago, when I stumbled across Frightened Rabbit, and while I still enjoy their live album ( Liver! Lung! FR! which was [...]
this is the silliest article i have ever read . well, no not really, but still. like the above guy, i'm not really into the super bowl this year, either. we'll watch it, though. to see how bruce sprinsgteen does. get on your boots will be used as part of a commercial for the nfl during the super bowl. u2's actual get on your boots video rollout didn't actually happen in a very good way, or happen at all. what did happen? who leaked it? how [...]

If Cake were to somehow become relevant again, start recording records where they're trying to cover They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top (not to mention moving an entire recording studio into the bottom of a damp mineshaft), the guys in The Phantom Band would probably have every right to cry foul and start typing out their intellectual property lawsuit inquiries. The group, who've adopted Glasgow as their home, sometimes wear bags on their heads (just for fun?) and whose new record Checkmate Savage [...]

Checkmate Savage was recorded in the band's adopted home city of Glasgow, beginning at Chemikal Underground's Chem 19 and finishing at Franz Ferdinand's own facility at an old Town Hall in Govan. Paul Savage of cult Glasgow band The Delgados served as producer, engineer and guiding force. The recording sessions were like their early jams: long, sinuous and radical; the band thumping out rhythms on broken wood blocks and organist Andy's 'shelvaphones', a home-made instrument created from metal shelf brackets. Gerry (bassist) on their prolonged sessions: "When you have been playing together [...]

The Glasgow sextet The Phantom Band's debut long player Checkmate Savage is due to drop soon, and this reviewer recommends hanging out all night outside the record store to score a copy. Perhaps nothing that extreme, but definitely pick it up after work. The boys were good enough to send over a couple of single-worthy tracks for review, and we're thankful for it. Dark and mysterious kosmische exotica groove injected melodies guide Checkmate Savage , the new album from The Phantom Band . Photography by Tsuru Well, we got the day off (it's Doctor Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard Day, which reminds me, why is it that the longest street "type" is given to the longest street names? Boulevard, really? Three syllables added to the nine or so already there (I lost count), what's wrong with "street" or "lane"? Anyway, I digress) so let's make this one a little quick one, I want to make the most of this 3rd day. [...]

I'm not quite sure what to make of The Phantom Band . Lead vocalist Duncan De Cornell has the deep, flat inflection of Matt Berninger, but the music is nothing like The National. In fact, the music is the real treasure here—the band makes unmistakably pop music, but takes the time to stretch out and jam, sometimes for several minutes without a break. It's rare that I hear poppy jam bands. Few of the songs clock in at under five minutes, which is another indicator that these guys are into long form music. A [...]

Photography by the REAL Aaron Dunn I love nice surprises, when some never-heard-of-em band with a vague enough description written by lard knows who (check this one, "the end result is truly special, bringing to mind the beat savvy of The Beta Band, the other-worldliness of Super Furry Animals and the mood of Hallowed Ground-era Violent Femmes." I had to at least give it a try, how could I not?) that I casually toss them on the iPod not thinking much about it, but then when I'm scrolling along one day and see [...]
