On paper, calling on Hot Chip to remix Pharcyde's "Passin' Me By" comes off as a pretty questionable idea. You've got one of the most direct, innovative hip hop groups in history on one side, and an outfit prominent for silly, off-kilter, smirking electronics on the other. Two things you'd expect to thrive off of their own purity - Pharcyde brings straight jams, and Hot Chip brings straight weird . Better to keep them separate, right? Then again, five years ago we would have said to keep The Beatles and Jay-Z [...]
Another Friday means a new Friday Mixtape. This time around in addition to the usual mix of singles, covers, remixes, and other tunes you should check out, we added a few mp3s from artists who will be hitting the stage at this weekend's Outside Lands Music Festival . Consequence of Sound will be live and on site at Outside Lands this weekend to provide recaps, reviews, and interviews of all of this weekend's festivities. On Delicious Vinyl’s RMXXOLOGY , indie dance-darlings Hot Chip remix “Passin’ Me By,” the much-loved tale of unrequited longing. The original track is classic 90’s hip-hop from The Pharcyde , from their legendary album Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde . Hot Chip takes the timeless track and reenvisions it as a sparkly dreamlike trip that’s heavy on the reverb, organ, and choral synths. The result is a track that evokes Gregorian chant as much as golden era hip-hop. "Passin' Me By (Hot Chip Remix)" | download [...]

The Pharcyde " Passin' Me By ( Hot Chip Remix) ": This RMXXOLOGY compilation is something else! This latest installment features Hot Chip stays true to this classic, keeping the original's understated drums, but adds elements that truly draws out the sense of loneliness from the lyrics. Truly a keeper for those who grew up on this broken heart tale. Shouts to Michelle for this!

I really can't say enough good things about Rock the Bells. The line-up was great, the accommodations generous and comfortable, the crowd knowledgeable and passionate. Plus, everyone involved gets extra-props for ensuring that no one gave the Black Eyed Peas any love during their "Hey, Don't You Guys Remember That We Weren't Always the Worst Rap Group on the Planet" nostalgia trip, made extra-ironic by the Peas performing their Behind the Front material, i.e. songs devoted to the notion that they would "never sell out" and always "keep it real." As I discuss in the Times [...]
by marc amigone The New York City installment of the International Rock the Bells hip-hop tour on Sunday may have been the best hip-hop show in history. In a night where Dead Prez, De la Soul, Biz Markie, Afrika Bambaataa, the Pharcyde, Raekwon, Ghostface, Scratch, Supernatural, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, Method Man, Redman, Slick Rick, EPMD, Keith Murray, Nas, Jay-Z and all four original members of A Tribe Called Quest with Busta Rhymes hit the stage, the 15,000 hip-hop fans who made it to the [...]

The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser. Greetings from "at large"! Like any good penitent, my self-imposed blogging exile has included certain dietary restrictions. Fer instance consuming as little music released in 2008 as possible. But spending the day slopping about in music-related nostalgia is still OK, because otherwise I would have to turn to Jack Van Impe reruns or honest work. That's why this weekend, while Maura was taking in the horror what Fat Mike and/or the Get Up kids wrought , I was at the Rock The Bells tour, a package deal [...]

Today down in Columbia, MD at Merriweather Post Pavillion is the Rock the Bells tour with A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Mos Def, De La Soul, Ghostface, Immortal Technique, The Pharcyde, and Dead Prez. Basically if you like hip hop, then you should go. In DC Menya and Axios Records play the Red and the Black . Finally in Philly, the TLA has Matt Costa and Sera Cahoone while the First Unitarian Church has Tilly and The Wall and The Ruby Suns. mp3: Tilly and the Wall - Bad Education [...]

This weekend is shaping up to be a good one. The heat won't be too bad and plenty of shows are coming through the area. Friday To begin the weekend, there are some huge shows Friday night. Of course, the so called biggest band in the world, Coldplay is in Philly at the Wachovia Center. Opening is Santogold . MGMT is playing yet another sold out show at the Starlight Ballroom with Violens and [...]
photo by Matthew Craig 1. Erlend Øye - "Sudden Rush (The Twelves Remix)" (mp3) Erlend Øye is one of my favorite Norwegian musicians from Bergen, Norway—best known for his role in Kings of Convenience. So when I discovered the Twelves' remix of "Sudden Rush," well, you can only really imagine my excitement. The Rio De Janeiro-based electro duo was formed by duo João Miguel and Luciano Oliveira back in 2005. And if you've ever listened to their remix of MIA's "Boyz," then you're already familiar with their cowbell-tinged (MSTRKRFT), [...]
In case you were on the fence about Delicious Vinyl, who's head honcho happens to be Rick Ross, feast your ears on Hot Chip's remix of Pharcyde's "Passin' My By." This spaced-out version, which features a slow churn of reverberant keys and wailing solos, comes courtesy of RMXXOLOGY —a remix-heavy compilation that finds Eminem, Peaches and Hot Chip, among others, re-interpreting classic hip-hop hits. Definitely not the hottest track on the disc (check the Sack of Songs this Thursday), but an interesting approach nonetheless. Goodies: The Pharcyde - "Passin' Me By [...]
I've never entertained the possibility of getting an iPhone because I always thought it was out of my league expensive. I've been happily oblivious in this fugue like state, going on with my life and doing more IMPORTANT things like listening to Laibach and researching Ashton Kutcher's genealogy. All the hype and mass hysteria just kind of passed me by... until someone told me that the iPhone is only $199. Duh, now I understand the out of control lines 'n' stuff. The wisdom of crowds! So now, hmmmmm, its a possibility. With that price its more [...]
hope everybody has a great weekend! I'm going to spend mine sleeping in and counting down the days until the Dark Knight comes out. The Pharcyde's "Passin' Me By" is really the closest thing that Delicious Vinyl has to a torch song, save the group's own "Runnin'". J-Swift's factory floor production underscores four rhymes whose pervasive sense of regret and defeat is too on the nose to ever be mistaken for the sly humor of a lament like Skee Lo's "I Wish"- the whole thing resonates like a collective hip hop Love in the Time of Cholera. Off the same LP as this week's Peaches/Tone Loc remix, Delicious Vinyl's RMXOLOGY , Hot Chip have wisely let [...]

I discovered yesterday that the legendary Rock the Bells tour, the always excellent looking American hiphop festival, is due to hit the UK on September 20th at the London O2 Arena (formerly the Millenium Dome, now the best arena venue in the UK by miles). Although pretty standard fare in the US now I'm sure, the lineup of the reformed A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Method Man, Redman, The Pharcyde, Mos Def, De La Soul, Raekwon, Ghostface, Dead Prez and The Cool Kids is pretty much the best hiphop lineup in the UK this side of the 80s [...]
