The idea of an album mixing acapellas from The Pharcyde with beats from A Tribe Called Quest holds very little interest for me. That's until I figured out who was behind the project. The good chaps at Gummy Soul are rather good at taking the notion of a mash up and making it classy (check out their Fela/De La album from last year for proof). So after sleeping on the first single from their upcoming new release when it arrived in the in box a few days ago, I've done a little double [...]
Podcast: Download Pharcyde Take Over of Stolen Records It is a take over, when Imani and Booty Brown of the Pharcyde accompanied by Computer Jay and DJ Vick One drop in to Stolen Records. Playing everything from Danny Brown to James Brown and telling tales about everyone from Rosie Perez to Russell Simmons. Listen: Pharcyde - On The DL [...]

I guess you could consider this to be a blend/mash-up, but that wouldn’t do this justice. Amerigo Gazaway of Gummy Soul, has been producing some dope music for a hot minute. He was responsible for the wonderful Fela Soul project from a year or so back. This is the first release from a similar project, which will be titled ‘Bizarre Tribe: A Quest to The Pharcyde’. The idea is, Amerigo takes the classic tracks sampled by Tribe, creates something completely new and then fuses it with some ill Pharcyde vocals. I’m looking forward to this release, as this type of project, [...]
It's a case of best 'til last today, with Kendrick Lamar - the top dog in the Top Dawg Entertainment stable, if you ask me - turning in his contribution to #TDEFamAppreciationWeek. 'Westside, Right On Time' sees Kendrick joined by Young Jeezy, with the pair trading verses over a solid beat from Canei Finch. What else? Nothing. I have a Pharcyde-assisted hangover (good show, fellas), and I can barely type. Seriously, I have nothing. Hold me. You can stream or download 'Westside, Right On Time' below, and don't forget to pick [...]

Auckland, New Zealand's Ben Jamin, whose " Gravity " joint we featured recently, was inspired by a couple of acts you, too, have likely received inspiration from. We're talking the Pharcyde and Roy Ayers, the former of whom Jamin is catching live this weekend. And to pay homage to the influential West Coast act, he created the perfectly dusty "Runnin' Past". Just be careful while you're listening: the drums might break your neck (no Busta).

Japan's DJ Kentaro is one of the most skilled turtablists in the world, and he's gradually evolved into an impressive producer since releasing his debut album on Ninja Tune in 2007 which featured tracks with Spank Rock and The Pharcyde. http://www.BizarreRideLive.com Bizarre Ride Live is the visually vibrant, aurally astounding, and truly one-of-a-kind tribute to the classic hip-hop album Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde. Playing The Pharcyde's seminal debut in its entirety, from start to finish, original members Fatlip and SlimKid3 have re-joined forces with Bizarre Ride producers J-Sw!ft and L.A. Jay to create this unique spectacular. Blurring the lines between a straight up hip-hop show and a theatrical performance, Bizarre Ride Live includes all the original skits and interludes from the record, and even some special surprise guests ("did somebody page Quinton??"). No [...]

When I first started the blog feature on Lights & Music last month, this mixtape was the first idea that I put into action. Wikipedia, in-short describes mixtapes as usually reflecting the musical tastes of its compiler, a conceptual mix of songs linked by a theme or mood tailored to the tape's intended recipient. Yeah sure, we've all made mixtapes before. But, what happens when you get a bunch of artists and bloggers to make a mixtape with the intended recipient being you? Thats what I wanted to find out. The concept is simple, yet I hadn't really seen it anywhere [...]

Well, we have another short list of musicians to present to you this week after the onslaught of great stuff from June. This week's new releases might as well feature Dirty Projectors (shown above) with their new album Swing Lo Magellan. The reviews for this album have been great and will certainly be something I listen to this upcoming week. Digitalism appears on the ever-present DJ Kicks series. We focused in on these guys last year with I Love You, Dude. Asop Rock, aka Ian Matthias Bavitz , is out with Skelethon, his first album since 2007. Bavitz [...]

It's been nineteen years since the release of The Pharcyde's debut album, Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde; yet Fatlip, Imani, Slimkid3, and (producer at the time) J-Sw!ft technically worked on in for a good year before its release. Released during the dominant Gangsta rap era of West Coast hip hop, Bizarre Ride was described as "refreshing," due to its playful, light-hearted humor and lush, jazzy production. On Saturday night, The Pharcyde held a huge party, celebrating the debut release of their first album at The Malibu Inn . Tomorrow afternoon will be the official re-release of 'Bizarre Ride...' (which will be a 3-CD pack +more) with [...]

Most of us go to work every day at jobs we find redundant, collaborating with people we don't like. And, generally speaking, the pay is terrible, and the benefits are worse. Yet, we plod on. But for some estranged bandmates, not even the lure of millions in collective earnings and/or reflective hosannas from the press is enough to justify taking a stage or booking studio time for one more go-round. Fortunately for us, they're almost always vocal about reunion gossip, which leads to one of two recurring scenarios: 1. Said band eventually reconciles for the love of [...]
