We wish we could remember where we found that first song down there, so we'd just like to say, "Thanks." We'd also like to thank Old Flame Records for making the Seattle band's fab - and we do mean fab - music available. We posted on them quite awhile ago and wish that songlink were still working. Click here, though, and you should find it.
I'm stuck on this new release from Ascetic , another gem from Melbourne. But, that being said, this is further proof that all things Oceania don't have roots in Flying Nun...not that I don't like those roots. This is a band intent on using the broadest strokes to create an expansive rock record, dark at times, yet stunningly beautiful in every aspect. Listening to their new effort, Self Initiation , I just keep finding myself lost in the musical landscape, taking turns, or unfolding to a further degree. Definitely worthy [...]

Frightened Rabbit return to Seattle this Friday / photo by Morgen Schuler With the KEXP Spring Fundraising Drive now over (and thank you to everyone who pledged a gift of support), it's time to get down to some live music in Seattle. This week, things start with a couple nice little shows at Easy Street Records in West Seattle with Pickwick on Monday night, and The Cave Singers on Tuesday night. Looking for other options on Tuesday night? There's also a SXSW Send Off Show with Lemolo, OC Notes, Spac3man, [...]

Today I present to you the first in a series of posts covering our top 50 albums of 2012. These lists take a long time to compile, so, to save my sanity, I've split it into a five-part countdown, beginning with 50 through 41. As these things go, it's all subjective - best-of lists are compiled based on what we feel at this particular moment in time. Case in point: At this time last year, my top three albums were: 3. Dream Diary by Jeremy Jay, 2. Music Sounds Better With You [...]

21. Tyvek - On Triple Beams ( In The Red ) 22. La Sera - Sees the Light ( Hardly Art ) 23. Skelator - Agents of Power ( Metal On Metal Records ) 24. Rhett Miller - The Dreamer ( Maximum Sunshine ) 25. The Pharmacy - Stoned & Alone ( Seayou Records ) Like The Days of Lore on [...]

It's really hard to narrow down a list of Top Albums of 2012, especially when you have four contributors with different opinions. We gave the reins to Nathan.Lankford and Nicole Baumann on this one, since they write the majority of the album reviews, but we all have a little representation within this. Now, we do realize that our site has specialized tastes, so please realize that these are our OPINIONS . You're welcome to disagree, and, in fact, we encourage that process. Also, we're doing a Top 100 because so many records came out this year, it wouldn't be fair to narrow [...]
In case you missed it, we named The Pharmacy's Stoned & Alone our favorite new release last week . Right on the heels of that release, the Seattle trio is set to perform this evening at The Stone Fox. Here's a bit of what I had to say about the band and their new album (you can catch the full review here ): The Pharmacy are a bit of an anomaly. Their music and their attitude represents an impossibly broad spectrum of influences, many which would typically contradict at best or completely [...]
The Pharmacy are the kind of rock ‘n’ roll band that records songs in a church, explores said church, and finds weed tucked inconspicuously behind the pulpit. Frontman Scottie Yoder tells this story in the band’s press release, and based on the album title— Stoned and Alone —it’s clear that marijuana is an inescapable part of The Pharmacy’s collective lifestyle. Suitably (or perhaps consequently), their music is an amalgamation of garage rock and throwback psychedelia. It’s purposefully sloppy and irreverent. By no means is there anything wrong with sloppy irreverence; however, the abundance of these kinds of [...]

Turkey has come and gone. After the joys of fambly and the crushing defeat at the hands of the Frogs from Ft. Worth, Friday night was bound to be better with a four band show at 29th St. Ballroom. The Pharmacy was in town and we had locals The Bad Lovers , Pharaohs , and Foreign Mothers to surround them in Keeping Austin Weird. The locals were pegged in the corner of the bar stage [...]

Sorry we're a little late with the New Release Spotlight this week. The holidays are kind of a music industry deadzone so I really wanted to dig deep and give a lot of bands I wasn't as familiar with a chance. I hope you'll do the same! Bust out those Thanksgiving leftovers and give a listen to: _ The Pharmacy- Stoned & Alone [Old Flame] Quick Take: This is my essential pick [...]

Long holiday, the weekend has me zonked from tryptophan, complex carbohydrates, and maybe a litte holiday cheer. 'Tis the season and there are lots of great samplers that will be posted over the next few weeks. Tonight, we have two samplers from indie labels: Love Our Records and Old Flame Records. BEST OF Love Our Records SAMPLER Love Our Records (LOR) is out Great Britain, based in London. They are committed to supporting and nurturing new music, and are offering a 10 song [...]

Release dates on holiday weeks are usually quite slow. As you would expect, today's list of new releases is indeed short, yet there are still a handful of interesting new albums to lure you into record stores before the holiday shopping masses come flooding in. Among them is the long awaited follow up to The Evens ' 2006 LP, Get Evens . Once again on The Odds , husband and wife duo Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi) and Amy Farina (Warmers) pair up on what our Music Director, Don Yates, calls "an often-gripping set of skeletal post-hardcore, [...]

The Sound by pwrhaus PWRHAUS, WHITE HINTERLAND, OLD FRIEND ( Holocene , 1001 SE Morrison) Read our article on PWRHAUS . THE PHARMACY, THE DANDELIONS, WHITE FANG ( East End , 203 SE Grand) Seattle's the Pharmacy continues to crank out simple psych pop that doesn't answer to anyone. The raw energy of their new full-length, Stoned and Alone , comes from the garage, [...]
With an album title like Stoned and Alone, it would be easy to assume that The Pharmacy's new full-length would just be more of the same party-perfect garage rock, but you'd be wrong. The cheekily titled album mixes the stoned sounds of the Pharmacy's past with upbeat retro pop toe tappers in the vein of [...]
