Three venues. A handful of bands. And it's literally impossible to enjoy all the potential music you could be enjoying in one night. Do you want to try to find out everyone's stage time (because you know...rock and roll is like clockwork) and calculate how many songs you can see being performed by the bands you prefer the [...]

photo by Dave Lichterman If you just couldn't get enough of Seattle band The Pica Beats in their feature as today's Song of the Day podcast , here's video from their recent in-studio on KEXP's Audioasis, the longest running Northwest music show. Principle songwriter Ryan Barrett is joined by his regular band - Alice Sandal on vocals and percussion, Marian Li-Pino on drums, and Johnny Goss on bass - for this session, featuring mostly songs from their self-released 2011 album, Better in Color . Check out the videos here:

Local DIY radio station Hollow Earth Radio is getting ready for its fourth annual Magma Festival this March and while the video announcing the line-up might give you nightmares, the bevy of great local and national acts that are playing won't. A $60 donation to Hollow Earth, will not only help the volunteer run, non-profit [...]

First question... Most important, is, why? I am always asking myself why, so I suppose my answer would be why. why squared. Now for the safe word…. Houseplant Favorite/least favorite cheese? (for the cheese-enthusiast) My favorite is either feta or goat cheese; I can't say I have a least favorite cheese. Probably mozzarella, even though I love pizza, I do have some lactose issues. [...]

Heyo peeps. Mark your calendars! Georgetown Music Fest is next Friday evening and Saturday starting at 2. It appears to be FREE and who doesn't like FREE STUFF?? I am especially a lover of free concerts. Notable bands include The Pica Beats on Friday night and Skeletons with Flesh on Them, The Black Whales, Hotels, and This Is Air Canada on Saturday (I actually have not heard This Is Air Canada, and I can't find any information on them so let's just hope they're cool, okay?) Listen to the Pica Beats. They're cutie patoots. :) UPDATE: [...]
South Seattle's destination neighborhood is Georgetown, the rust-colored, industrial arts community slowly growing at a semi-gentrified pace. They even have a Via Tribunali now and the Miller Building along 13th has a bunch of new tenants. I do love me some Georgetown grit, but lately I haven't been getting down there near as much as I used to (confidential to Smarty Pants: save me a sandwich, please.) Lucky for me and for the rest of us, the Georgetown Music Fest is still going strong with its fifth installment coming up in nine days. The [...]
Georgetown ::: photo by Josh Lovseth Without the fanfare that accompanies its local music festival siblings, The Georgetown Music Festival has quietly been introducing Sound on the Sound to some of its favorite local bands. Courtesy of Georgetown Music Festival we first heard: The Lonely Forest, The Globes, Skeletons with Flesh on Them and Kaylee Cole. [...]

On November 21, 2009 Camp Revival filmed Ryan Barrett from The Pica Beats in Seattle's Roosevelt neighborhood. It was a dark night; outside, a monsoon of biblical proportions pelted down on the small fruit stand that we huddled in to evade the weather. Drinking cheap, burnt coffee we started to set up our equipment amidst the seasonal produce and dairy fridges. After a couple of sips, Barrett got familiar with the produce that surrounded him and started strumming the chords to "Whisper Wine," a new song that The Pica Beats are currently working on. Above is [...]

The Seattle DIY king (Levi Fuller) returns with his next Ball Of Wax comp. This time, it's themed. Each song is between one and two minutes in length, hence the album's name, Ball Of Wax 18: One Minute Singles . You'll see some FensePost local favorites in there, including Levi Fuller (Mr. Seattle DIY himself), Virgin Of The Birds (pictured), Dandelion Gold, Webelos, Open Fire Choir, and Poland. To celebrate its launch, there's gonna be a SHOW! More on that soon, [...]
Last week Hardly Art quietly posted to Amazon a sampler of 17 of the year's more notable tracks from artists such as Le Loup, the Moondoggies and the Dutchess & The Duke, including a few special tracks that haven't appeared anywhere else. Lucky us, they are offering it for free to the world. It's all [...]
The Carousel Festival is Seattle's DIY house-scene annual extravaganza, and it begins today at 3pm. The Green House (run by the affable Natron) and the Healthy Times Fun Club -two of the most prominent house venues in town-will be hosting the event, along with Dancylvania, Gallery 1412, Black Lodge, and Cairo Gallery. Go here for comprehensive location info. . Not only is the effort for a good cause- Urban Rest [...]
I shot a few blog-worthy videos at the ol' Block Party last weekend and thought I'd post a few of 'em here. On the blog. I also linked to a couple of them in my Friday and Saturday writeups. Most of them are only snippets of songs in the 1-2 minute range but that's cuz my arms get tired, yo. Also, your attention span blows. Good enough for ya? Let's begin. . Micachu & the Shapes - "Curly Teeth" . [...]

Figuring the confines of Neumos would give us a break from the sun, the first band we went to check out on Saturday was local new wave quartet Hotels . From what I'd heard previously, I expected to really enjoy their set, and for the first few songs I did ("Port of Saints", "Near the Desert, Near the City"). But as the songs continued, I found myself with more criticisms than accolades (case in point: a track that sounded like an intentionally-lost Allman Brothers jam (whaa?) and the unfortunate gold-plated "hotel" name [...]
Yesterday, I put up my game plan for Friday's Block Partly lineup , and today I offer you some thoughts on Saturday. The mainstage-with Sonic Youth, the Thermals, Gossip, and the Pains of Being Pure at Heart all scheduled-is gonna be difficult to leave, but obviously there are a ton of bands worth checking out on either of the other two stages. . I can't claim to be a Life Long Sonic Youth Fan, and I haven't even listened to half their albums [...]
The Pica Beats steal the show and my heart. The Pica Beats, a band whose sound leaves a gentle wake behind it, followed them. Often compared to The Decemberists, The Pica Beats have a majesty all their own. First, Barrett doesn't sing like he's got a mouth full of "r's". Second, his lyrics are not as narrative driven as Maloy's. Also, The Pica Beat's are more rooted in a mystical, otherworldly quality, brought on by the use of sitar. read more
All parts Oregon, Point Juncture, WA is going to rock you. Slowly. In their collectively cradled arms. And when they do, you should look at the calluses on their hands and be thankful that someone out there is working hard to provide for you. They released Heart To Elk in February 2009 on Mt. Fuji Records. read more
