The awesome 930 Club here in DC turned 30 on Monday and to celebrate, it had a big ol' birthday party with a bunch of bands who played for free. It was a great celebration of all of the acts that helped put the 930 on the map as a club, as well as a great peek into the long string of bands that that came out of DC, many of whom owe their start in music because of the 930 Club. This history of the club is a great story and one that the Washington [...]

DC has become my adopted city since I moved here after grad school for my first "real" job. It's a city that has its problems, but it also contains some amazing aspects as well. For a music dork like myself, at the top of this list of amazing DC elements definitely includes the 930 Club . My first experience to the 930 was at its old location, on 930 F St.,to see Paul Westerberg on his first solo tour after the Replacements in 1993. By the time I'd moved back in 2002, the [...]

Need a quick ska fix? Don't worry, your local corner ska peddler here at the Housewives is here for ya (you god damn junkies...)Released nearly 12 years ago, The Pietaster's "Willis" definitely has some solid ska that anyone who is a fan of The Specials or The Slackers could definitely appreciate. The songs themselves are very soul influenced (not something you hear everyday in the world of ska
Freaking stoked out of my mind could not even begin to describe how hyped I was to catch the biggest ska fest on this side of the hood. Yesterday I trekked the two hour drive out to the Starland Ballroom in New Jersey. After getting horribly lost (god I hate google maps sometimes), I finally arrived a tad late missing most of the local bands. Hub City Stompers: When I first heard of the

This week's selection is a slightly older one. Coming together in 1990, The Pietasters got their start playing small bars in and around Georgetown. They've come a long way from that point now. They've toured with the likes of the Toasters, played at Warped Tour and the late HFStival, and have gone out on numerous headlining tours. They're biggest feat, playing in front of a sold out crowd backing the godfather of soul, the late James Brown. They're gone through many line up changes, hopped around labels (Hellcat, Moon Ska, Epitaph, and Fueled By Ramen) but they're still [...]
