![[Introducing] – Jordan O'Jordan](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3932186_lg.jpg)
Tweet Seattle-via-Waverly, Ohio transplant Jordan O'Jordan is a self-described "Chatty Cathy". This is evident by his charmingly off-beat lyrics, touching on topics as varied as fairy tales, science, the natural world, as well as grandmothers engaged in hilariously hateful feuds. Scientific references abound throughout his own unique brand of organic Appalachian folk pop. Informed by preoccupations as diverse as electricity, science, a capella singin', showtunes and folk songs, he has crafted a patchwork quilt of the scientific and [...]

Toronto - Cuff The Duke has been around for a few years now, but one question still nags at the brain of many a fan (or me at least) - what exactly does it mean to "cuff the duke?" Legend has it that the band found a t-shirt in some Oshawa thrift store with that very phrase written on it, but the exact meaning remains mysterious. We'll probably never know. What we do know is that Cuff The Duke is a solid alt country band and that they just played two packed nights at the Horseshoe promoting their new [...]
A couple weeks ago, the Olympic Flame passed by my house. I didn't even know it was going to, but all of a sudden, hundreds of people were lining the streets. Until that point, I had actually been rather cynical about the Olympics taking place in the Vancouver area. "As if there aren't five times too many people here already." When the flame passed, I started warming up to the idea. (Pun intended? Maybe.) While my Olympic Fever didn't register on the mercury until midway through the opening ceremonies, Canadians have been excited for a long time. And [...]
(source: myspace.com/pinecones) Considering yesterday's post about Vancouver's Yukon Blonde, today's featured band, Toronto via Halifax's The Pinecones might have you thinking that there's a retro-revival going on in the great White North. "Sage", the title track from the band's new album, is a psychedelic tambourine-infused pop rocker, that glides along on smooth guitar riffing and a heady rhythmic brew. Around this time last year, front man Brent Randall released We Were Strangers in Paddington Green under the name Brent Randall & his Pinecones, garnering comparisons to [...]
![CD Review: The Pinecones – Sage [Just Friends, February 9th]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2298868_lg.jpg)
I love Just Friends Records . If you remember my shitty Julie Fader review from Pop Montreal, all I really remembered from the show was my Cheval Blond and that the guitar player was wearing a Just Friends T-shirt. Maybe I just like owls? So when I heard of a new release by The Pinecones, I got excited. Sometimes I pick up a CD and try to judge the style of music based solely on the album art. Some times I am right, other times I am totally wrong. [...]

I think one of them knows something that the others don't. The Pinecones , formerly Brent Randall & His Pinecones, have a new album. The 15-track record entitled " Sage " pays homage to tea parties, gentlemanly gentlemen and shoemakers. It's the result of a collaboration between Randall, Brian O'Reilly, (Meligrove Band, Their Majesties), Paul Linklater (Bindiband), and Joel Goguen (Laura Peek & The Winning Hearts). Each member wrote and sang their own songs, and it all comes together in this amazingly cohesive and charming piece that sounds like it came from [...]

A few years ago, I fell in love with the Newman/McCartney-esque pop that Hali's Brent Randall and his trusty Pinecones put out. We Were Strangers ... was an ear pleasing slice of orchestral pop, bursting at the seams with tons of studio musicians chiming in on any and every instrument you can think of, all working together to deliver Randall's vision. The songs turned out great, but the process and logistics must have been draining. It only makes sense that this time around, Randall has trimmed down the band to four full-time members [...]

For this week's party tune, we are digging that psychedelic folk-rock sound one might hear from a band from Halifax. A band called The Pinecones. Tune in, turn on and clean the floor with some Pime-Sol. (Their album – Sage – comes out February 9th. Listen: The Pinecones ∞ Sage
I don't even remember who I went to the El Mocambo to see the night I was introduced to the music of Brent Randall & His Pinecones but I remember coming away impressed with the young band. Now the band has moved their base from their native Halifax to Toronto and shortened their moniker to The Pinecones. With that business done, the band are releasing their sophomore album Sage (out today).
posted by Matt: Strange Love (Don't Be Lazy) The Gideons - Hymns for Hers These brats are friends from Halifax, but this aint no plug. Their debut release is dynamite and is often spinning in my car. It's lo-fi and sloppy but it only adds to the charm. They have combined the best of 60's inspired garage (think The Gruesomes) , 70's power pop (The Raspberries/Badfinger), and shameless Beatlisms (The Rutles?). [...]
Matthew Baldwin over at defective yeti has a marvelous seasonal post about the challenges of being married to a botanist : Me : Why didn't you put holly in our wreath? Queen : Because holly berries are poisonous, and when Squiggle saw them he pointed excitedly and yelled "cherries!" M : Ah, good call. But what about the pine cones? You could have put a few of those on there. [...]
