![Album Reviews By 12-Year-Olds: The Pining, The Pining [Blocks Recording Club, 2011]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4283265_lg.jpg)
I don't listen to country music very often but The Pining is a good band to start listening to. Toronto's Tara, Emma, Julie, Kaili, Dani and Mika began as an un-intentional gathering of girls singing. They got more dedicated when they started to write their own songs. The Pining is an indie-country-folk band. The very first song of the album right away catches your ears! Call It Quits is a very catchy song as are most of the songs in this album. Already on the second time [...]

Ms. Pieta Brown is bringing her "artist in residence" show called "This Land Is Your Music" back to The Mill Restaurant in Iowa City on April 14th, 2012. In a similar fashion to the last two the show will feature Pieta as the headliner with other artists with local ties opening and a gallery exhibit. This year, the event has been condensed into one show- but it is a powerhouse bill shared with The Pines and is a weekend show. Pieta's set will be with a backing band that she is calling The [...]

There are many nights I struggle to fall asleep, tossing and turning even as the sky begins to light up. This is something I've always struggled with, and I think I'm projecting it onto not just Clark's sixth album, "Iradelphic" , but his entire body of work, so allow me to try to remove that aspect of myself from this review. As it stands, Clark to me is the sound of endless nights, of robotic sleepless hazes that blur together. It is its own drug. So, with that said: [...]
So much live music happening this weekend ranging the gamut of genres.

Red House Records recording artists and former Iowa City band The Pines are returning to the big stage at CSPS in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, February 4th. The Pines were here just last September as the third act to play the newly re-opened CSPS which had gone under a very extensive remodeling and updating over the previous year. The picture above is from that show. This time the band is back as part of a tour supporting the release of the band's fourth album Dark So Gold which came out this [...]
The Pines - Since their last album -- 09's excellent Tremelo -- Twin Cities Americana outfit has expanded dramatically from founding duo Benson Ramsey and David Huckfelt to a full seven piece band -- but the sound remains intimate and ethereal even when the wattage increases now and then // Release : Dark So Gold (January 31, Red House) // Sounds like : having two distinct songwriters, each with their own style, creates an interesting meld of crafts: an air of dark mystery juxtaposed with a rich, earthy directness...a windswept Midwestern [...]
A mysterious black feather and other items with symbolic possibilities aplenty figure in prominently into the new, moody "Cry, Cry Crow" video from Midwest folk act the Pines. Our star is a ginger-ha

Tweet This winter has been kind of a bummer. Where I'm at, we haven't experienced even one good snow. I really love winter. Not so much being cold all the time, but the feeling that you get while listening to some great winter music. Last year, for me, it was Fleet Foxes . There's something about waking up to a winter wonderland outside, making coffee, and listening to some great cold weather-inspired albums. Needless to say that around this time, I start looking for music [...]
It's hard for friends to understand when I try explaining to them this absolute nausea I feel about New Year's Eve. I go out, I appreciate being around the friends... I'm happy enjoying the moment with them, yet in the back of my mind is a swelling sadness, a wave so huge that by the [...]

It's coming on 2012, and all around us, bloggers tout their 2011 taste, jostling to be the best and first match for your own preferences, inviting debate over position in the ranks. And so, as we do every year as the calendar comes to a close, we struggle with the conceit of The Year In Review, surveying a year's worth of posts, writing a never-ending series of half-hearted drafts, flinching every time we approach the task, yet feeling guilt every time we put it down. My reluctance to pass judgement isn't a cop-out. [...]

The Pines Phantom Limb may look like they've just stepped off the first Pan Am flight from Georgia clutching a bottle of whiskey and a bunch of Eagles records but their brand of Southern States country soul actually comes via Great Western Railways and Bristol. It's AOR and produced by Marc Ford of the Black Crowes but seriously don't let any of that put you off. If the foottapping mandolin and warm harmonies don't [...]
This morning was warm, sunny and quiet when I left for breakfast. When I got home, my yardmen were just finishing clearing the pine needles from the front lawn and the oak leaves from the deck and driveway. I could see grass and pavement for the first time in a long while; however, soon after the men left, the wind started again, and the pine needled have begun reclaiming the lawn. Now the clouds have rolled in and the sun has disappeared. The day is much like yesterday, drab. While I was talking to my sister, I watched [...]
Download : Caveman - "Thankful" New York's Caveman start of this weeks mix with "Thankful" an ideal mix of Brooklyn texture and that chilled out vibe all of us are looking for as the year wears down towards its close. These guys remind me of what Bishop Allen (one of my all-time favorites) could potentially [...]
![[Listen] – The Pines – "Worried Blues"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3812567_lg.jpg)
Tweet What is it about a cold night and a solid breeze that makes a song like " Worried Blues" feel absolutely right. The song sounds great, and that's not changing with the seasons, but why does fall cause a song with such hints of sadness to settle within and make us think "Yeah...I dig that" in such a Kerouacian jazz manner. Without hesitation I can say that this is the best time of year. When I count on wearing a hooded sweatshirt [...]
Ben Howard - Old Pine " f this is recorded on earth, i am not sure if i want to go to heaven.."

There was nothing but love for the Midwest at the Mason Jennings show at the 9:30 club on September 25, 2011. The show kicked off with a great jam session by The Pines . Hailing from Washingtion(, Iowa) the group's sound was Mason-esque with a bit of the Eels mixed in. Their songs and their demeanor were great. My sister and I always debate the pros and cons of 'chatty' bands versus groups that just take the stage and playnonstopforanhour. I think there are merits to both but it's much easier for chattier bands to [...]
