It's that time of the year, when those who are prone to list making start doing just that. Albums, EPs, singles, books, movies, tv shows, funny cat pictures, apps and/or whatever else came out in the year before the Mayans said it would all end, the ranking and analyzing has begun. If you are a list maker (of which, I am one), you've probably already started on yours. And as you start spending more time than is socially acceptable, narrowing down and sorting out your list of the impossible to fully absorb releases, other lists will come out and throw [...]

As folks start to think about their favorite records of the year, I wanted to shine the spotlight again on one of my own favorites which has unfortunately flown a bit under the radar: Steve Salett's project The Poison Tree. Salett—who also wrote one of the year's best tracks in The Bandana Splits' "Sometimes" —quietly released an intimate treasure last winter sparsely colored with bits of acoustic guitar, upright bass, and jazz-flavored horns. Here's what I wrote back in January: "The songs on Steve Salett's debut as The Poison Tree are in no hurry [...]

my sweet love has gone away, my sweet love has gone today ♫ Moby - The Poison Tree Even though I was at a press conference for Moby and his new album/photo-book Destroyed back in June, I never sought out the disc. I'd kinda assumed Moby had done fell off. Then I heard "The Poison Tree" and was reminded how good the guy can be with a soul/gospel sample. It's like 2000 all over again! "The Poison Tree" is on the 3-disc deluxe edition of Destroyed which you can pre-order [...]

Brooklyn's Poison Tree is a new band led by Steve Salett, the former front man of King Of France together with a seletion of musicians from his Saltlands Music Collective. They have released a self-titled debut album that is noticeable for its surefooted harmonies, embracing acoustic guitar and warm vocals - a record that doesn't so much overwhelm as invite the listener in, sits him down and then proceed to delight and engage with a cleverness and a confidence that only comes with experience. Yes sir, this has all the signs of [...]

Listening to The Poison Tree elicits a unique sense of déjà vu. Although the precise cause of this feeling is difficult to articulate, it is entirely evident that the band has created one of the most beautiful albums in recent memory. The Poison Tree is the latest project of former King of France front man, Steve Salett, and an assortment of musicians from his Saltlands music collective in Brooklyn. The resulting self-titled LP is a seamless exploration of love, life, and the human condition. From the opening track, Salett's warm baritone vocal's wrap the listener in an auditory [...]

In the "Largehearted Boy Cross-Media Cultural Exchange Program" series (thanks to Jami Attenberg for the title), authors interview musicians (and vice versa). Former King of France frontman Steve Salett's solo project The Poison Tree released its self-titled debut album this week, a disc American Songwriter called an "innovative indie rock opus.". Stream it at Spinner . John Wray is an author, his most recent book is the novel Lowboy . Author John Wray [...]
The Poison Tree is the latest incarnation of Steve Salett -- or Salad, as he calls himself -- a veteran of the downtown New York music scene and co-founder of both the Saltlands music collective in Brooklyn and his own well-regarded outfit The King of France. If King, with its broad, intense swipes of jittery if melodic Talking Heads and Beatle retro influences, represents one side of the musical coin, Salett's latest project The Poison Tree, arriving March 15, is the other. The upbeat garage influences [...]

While 2010 saw the book publishing world produce some excellent works despite the trials caused by the ever-worsening economy, 2011 is already promising to take it up a notch with with beloved talents like Alice Hoffman, Edith Pearlman, Charles Baxter, and James McElroy. There are also some very exciting debuts. Here is a list of books that arrived in January with some recommendations from your editor in order to help you navigate the literary landscape. Much to dig … Killer Nuggets -y rock from Mind Spiders (ex- Marked Men ). Super trio Middle Brother brings the type of rootsy harmonies you expect (and love) from ex- Dawes , Deer Tick , Delta Spirit members. Ex- Vivian Girls singer Katy Goodman goes off on her own for a sweet La Sera . Panda Bear helps Ducktails ready for a new LP. Shout out to MattO for getting the Kordan jam lodged in my head and stuck on repeat. Finally a 3-day, lazy weekend bonus [...]
Brooklyn band The Poison Tree just sent us this very cool video set to the opening scene of Orson Welles' movie, Touch of Evil . I remember this movie from a cinema class that I failed / dropped out of (let's say dropped out since my mother reads this sometimes). The scene was made famous because it was shot in its entirety with only one camera. It's a great video and song. Plus Janet Leigh is hot. The Poison Tree's self-titled debut comes out in March. We'll have more coming about this album in the coming [...]

Come On Come On - The Poison Tree
[ download ] [tweetmeme] Poet William Blake wrote about the poison tree, an arboreal manifestation of ill-regard bearing fruit that can lure and kill a foe. The twist of the poem is Blake's description of the poison that nourishes the tree: "...I water'd it in fears, Night & morning with my tears; And I sunned it with my smiles And with soft deceitful wiles" The narrator in the poem thusly tends the tree and when his foe is vanquished by its fruit, he feels [...]

The songs on Steve Salett's debut as The Poison Tree are in no hurry to get anywhere. Slow burning and endlessly pondering—like a late night candlelit conversation over a bottle of whiskey—the former frontman of The King of France delivers a collection of stories with his gently emotive and seductive baritone that recalls fellow singer-songwriter greats Leonard Cohen and Bill Callahan. Salett (or, as he refers to himself, Salad) enlisted several excellent New York musicians for the recording process, including Dawn Landes and Thomas Bartlett, and their combined expert execution is evident through each carefully constructed track. Look [...]

New Music this Week ! Someone You Should Know Technically speaking, the song for the video you are about to watch; (And watch it you will,) won't be released for another ten weeks (or thereabouts - it's late and I'm not doing the math). But I am very anxiously awaiting it. This is The Poison Tree , [...]

It's a nearly impossible task: to sort, listen to (rinse. repeat), pass or fail tracks, write up reviews, and publish all of the music that is piled up in our email boxes, via the submission forms, and CDs and vinyls. The end of the year is fast approaching, but we've still got 2010 music that [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

6am Repeat is a recurring feature here at Folk Hive in which we stream the latest track that plays incessantly in the earbuds when we awake at that hour and imbibe massive amounts of coffee and cigarettes in preparation for the advancing day. "Still lettin' 'em down"? Yeah, me too. Maybe not, though. Maybe it's better than we all think it is. Maybe it's good. Maybe? Also, Steve Salett is the shit. And that album cover is one of the greatest I've seen this year. The [...]

The Poison Tree is led and formed by one man, but is in no way a one man group. Steve Salett, former frontman of The King of France , pulled in a slew of collaborators he's met over the years to help craft this self titled debut. We're a ways away from the release (May 2011 via EmBarque) but this won't stop me from sharing the absolutely gorgeous track 'Come On Come On' off of it. Steve Salett sounds like he's bringing us back to the traditional singer/songwriter form with [...]
