Six Degrees Records have made a big name for themselves over the 10 years since their founding. And they're not above saying so themselves. In a press release that labels the major record companies as "dinosaurs," Six Degrees notes that they are among the independent labels "that have found a way to adapt to the music world's changing climate" like, say "the nimble little critters running around the dinosaurs' feet." Some of their artists/releases veer a little too much into the modern, forsaking roots for electronic sleight of hand, but their roster still boasts some of our [...]

Martin Just after I turned 17, my friends and I decided to travel up north for a party weekend. As we were driving, my friend lost control of the car and crashed it into a wall. Luckily nobody was killed, but we had to get cut out of the car. Both of my legs were numb and one of my arms was badly broken. I spent the next few months confined to a wheel-chair in the hospital, being totally dependent on the doctors and nurses. There was this one nurse called Ellie there most days. She [...]

Now that the lovey-dovey stuff has passed on for another 12 months, it's time to start afresh here at TVV. You'll probably have noticed that The Police are the latest band from days of old to bless us with news that they are to reform and go on tour. I'm happy to admit that this was the main band on stage at my first major concert at the Glasgow Apollo back in May 1979, and I subsequently saw
So, in case you had your head under a rock, The Police reunited for a tame version of 'Roxanne' at the Grammys on Sunday night, telling all the good denizens of musicland that they don't have to walk the streets for money. In case you weren't within shouting distance of a TV (yeah, me neither) we can all reminisce: I echo the first sentence of Bob Lefsetz's column about the blessed confluence: " They'd better not play a [...]

About a month ago I came across a performance by Hasidic reggae star Matisyahu from an appearance he made on Jimmy Kimmel Live . Having been a casual fan of his for a while it seemed reasonable to think that the performance would be somewhat entertaining, so I blindly starting watching (listening) to it. Moments in, I realized what song was actually playing and I became frozen in thought...it was "Message in a Bottle." How perfect, I thought, was it that a relatively unthreatening artist played a cover of an unthreatening song originally written [...]

Most of us know about the Bears from Chicago. Yeah, the disappointing football team whose promising year was ruined by a grinning quarterback from Louisiana. But what about Bears from Cleveland, Ohio? Unlike their football counterparts, this fun loving band is poised to have another great year in 2007. Originally consisting of the duo Craig Ramsey and Charlie McArthur, both multi-instrumentalists brought their bedroom project Bears out of the closet after spreading them throughout Cleveland and later recruiting four more members to play with them live. Guitarist Patrick Tripto, bells and tambourine player Rachel Hart, bassist Sean Sullivan, [...]

Found a folder on my old portable hard drive that had a project folder for a home video that I made for friends back in freshman year of college. It was a compilation of videos that my buddy Tomas took on his camcorder, remixed to music and cut up in episodes. I won't get into details, but it was/is some serious blackmail material. the opening screen: Title screen (I didn't take this picture): Back in college, we stole a couch from another residence hall's [...]

Over the past couple of weeks, the rumors of a Police reunion tour have pretty much become a foregone conclusion. The only mystery left is where they are going to play. Yesterday, we got the first "official" confirmation of any of the dates. Boston TV station WBZ reports that The Police will play two shows at Fenway Park on July 28 and 29. That the band has been rehearsing in Vancouver for the past couple of weeks is possibly the worst kept secret in [...]
X-Rated After sneaking in at the last minute on contrast podcast this week (thankyou Tim) I thought I should explore the theme of explicitness in music and film just a little bit more. My contribution was from the Super Furry Animals with 'The Man Don't Give A Fuck' - I thought I was being quite outrageous at the time, but after I listened to this weeks entries I quickly realised the SFA were in fact quite tame. However, undeterred I thought I'd give you my runners up. Firstly we have [...]

keeping Southern Cali highways a safer place If one more person comes up to me and asks, " cold enough for ya? " I'm gonna breakdance on their face. I don't think my peoples back in San Diego truly appreciate what it's like to live in cold weather. Right, this has been a mild winter, I know. See, it's not so bad the first day. Another week of cold and you're a little over it, but at least you've got a warm apartment and you get to sport new winter clothes. [...]

The Police were a British band that existed from 1977 to 1984. They are best known for their hybrid of rock and reggae. I am just old enough to remember the early eighties height of their popularity. I was in elementary school. All I really recall is the Synchronicity era and the constant playing of those songs just about everywhere. I just wanted it to stop. Who else remembers the constant showings of the black and white video for "Every Breath You Take," back when MTV actually showed videos? Most of my younger readers probably know [...]
