With a Jing Jang here and a Jang Jong there, barring the ever-illusive Joe Lean remnants of the inferred major-screwing, LP-scrapping troupe are scattered ubiquitously throughout a seething Shacklewell Arms. Tonight's bunch, adjudged on pure and simply superficial old attire, are out in force to witness TOY whip a four-legged Dalston-centric residency into knowingly lackadaisical, forcedly monochromic action. Conversely, those here congregated muster minimal enthusiasm in indulging in Ralegh Long's brand of lightly melodramatic, folk-lilted chanson: somewhere on the side of the long, lonesome, and meandering road between scrapbook emperor Jeffrey Lewis and perennial prog titans The Tangent, his is [...]

After witnessing James Blake, Flying Lotus and Gaslamp Killer all deliver incredible sets at last week's Low End Theory (my full review can be found here ), I found myself listening to some of their best selections over the course of the following days. One of the many highlights of Flying Lotus' set was Martyn's "Popgun" from the upcoming Ghost People LP, set to be released next month on Brainfeeder. Ghost People marks the 25th release on the label, and if the raging crowd at Low End during "Popgun" and constant DJ rotation of the [...]
We've teamed up with Popgun Booking to present hip-hop luminaries Shabazz Palaces on May 12 at Santos Party House in Manhattan, along with female rap duo Thee Satisfaction (who also appear on Shabazz Palaces' mindblowing new record Black Up ) and another opener TBA. We've got a few tickets to give away for this one courtesy of Popgun : just leave your name in the comments , and I'll pick the winners at random next week. You [...]
In New York we're turning a corner. It's not nice out, just warmer. Heartbreaking London-based pop quartet Still Corners have never played in New York. Here's your chance to see them! These are the details:

You occasionally have those bands that cross your path that if given out of context time is irrelevant, and it could have been produced anytime in the past 20, 30, even 50 years. Velvet Davenport do exactly that with their catchy, yet subtle, psychedelic pop. The type of music that can bring you back to warm spring and summer days just by dropping a needle, or as it is today pressing play. The first line of this delightfully stoner psychedelic pop that has intense guitars, but at the same time calm inducing. [...]
Yet another in a long line of exceptional bookings from the gang of PopGun, Animal Collective's Avey Tare will be slinging records, CD's and MP32s this Friday night, September 24, in a DJ set at Glasslands Gallery, with supporting live performances by California's rising Crocodiles, Kria Brekkan (ex-Mum), Headless Horseman, and Baby Alpaca. Crocodiles are [...]
Free Budweiser, RSVP here.

Colorado has been producing a good number of wonderful musicians over the past couple years (ie see M. Pyres !), and one that I started to follow last year was the Fort Collin's Candy Claws . Candy Claws have been lumped into the whole chillwave genre that has evolved over the past couple of years, but in actuality they have been making music since 2006. Hidden Lands , their new album, will be released on August 3rd on Two Syllables , this will be their second full [...]

Hey, here's a question for you. What are you doing on Friday, July 16...and your answer better be "I'm going to the Caribou , Class Actress , Teengirl Fantasy , Diamond Rings and Idiot Glee show at Glasslands" [...]
Never mind the quality, enjoy the quality : Suddenly I was part of everything The moment I heard you saying my name My world was aflame All the things that I may have dreamed of Before that day are not now important And this is what you've meant [This concludes The Popguns weekend ]
Another live Popguns track, Gone - this time live on homeground, at the Brighton Free Butt. These date from a mini-reunion in 2003: [Part of The Popguns weekend ]
Thanks to Pat Walkington - who was the band bassist - there's a few chunks of live Popguns online. Waiting For The Winter, live at The Cooperage in Plymouth: " Don't Smile, from the same gig: ... and Bye Bye Baby: [Part of The Popguns weekend ]
This is a lovely song. It's also lovely because it comes taped from Transmission. A programme of which those who lived in the North of England spoke of lovingly, which frustrated indiekids in the TVS region never got to see. Unless they found themselves in a bedsit in Leeds, and working through a pile of shaky VHS tapes. [Part of The Popguns weekend
They used to get a bit stoppy when people suggested they were interesting because their drummer had been in The Wedding Present. Which is understandable, because who would want to think that the job your drummer was sacked from was the highpoint of your offering? [Part of The Popguns weekend ]
Sure, Brighton is seen as a creative place, but when I was growing up there, it wasn't exactly knee-deep in local bands. There was The Groove Farm; Bobby Gillespie would commute to his drug den from the seafront; and as the Evening Argus never tired of reminding us, Annie Nightingale lived amongst us. But supporting local bands was a bit like supporting Brighton And Hove Albion - it was very unusual to find yourself cheering success at a national level. God, when Mung Bean Jesus got picked up as a running punchline in the NME Thrills! section, it [...]

A couple weeks ago I walked up to my front door and saw this: Ok, so I know it's no mystery...but I live in Brooklyn...and most people reading this blog know that only one thing comes in a package that size...a fucking 73. Worst case scenario is that someone stole it, and I never know and I contact the label and say it never showed up...right? Nope, not in this case. Enclosed inside that little package was this: [...]

I don't think I can get through this weekend of POP FEST without mentioning the banging after party that Pop Gun booking is throwing at Glasslands late night on Saturday. I mean...not only is BOAT playing (who killed it at Bruar Falls last night, including a Guided By Voices cover! check out my coverage of BOAT here ), but two other bands I'm been into pretty much the whole year. ------------------- [...]
