These days it seems like there has been a huge revival of C86 , Sarah and K Records influenced bands popping up. I can't count the times that I've caught myself making a Tiger Trap, Field Mice, Talulah Gosh, Beat Happening, or Veronica Lake references in the past year. While I feel that a lot of the credit has been going to all girl pop groups for revival of this sound there is something to be said for perfectly executed boy//girl vocals. And that brings me to Veronica Falls. [...]

It's a serious Glasslands weekend coming up for fmly and our frnds, maybe we'll just spend it sleeping on the Williamsburg waterfront with nasty falafel hangovers every morning. Feel free to bring your sleeping bag and join in! Glasslands is located at 289 Kent Ave. On Friday April 30, Memoryhouse finally make their way to New York opening for Tanlines, Keepaway, Light Pollution, and a band I'm waiting to be surprised by because of so much curiousity, Psychobuildings. Doors are at 8:30 and it's $10 at the door, but you need to remember to rsvp [...]
Q: How do you celebrate Valentine's Day in New York City the RIGHT way? A: By taking your broke, single ass to this party late night on the day of days to catch DJ sets by Neon Indian, Cubic Zirconia...

Last night I paid a visit to my local picture palace to see Ken Loach's latest film, Looking for Eric . Having enjoyed The Damned United earlier this year, I was looking forward to seeing a football-themed film from a director whose work I have admired for some time. The Eric of the title refers to the fictional postman at the heart of the film and also to Eric Cantona who appears as himself. I was never a fan of his Mancunian football team, but I was a big fan of Cantona the footballer and Cantona the [...]

Caught with bird droppings on his socks, Sony Dong was charged on Tuesday in California with smuggling exotic Asian songbirds from Vietnam by strapping them onto his legs. In December of 2008 Dong was flagged for abandoning 18 birds in a suitcase in LAX, this time around the inspected the 46 year old but luckily it didn't take a thorough enema to find what Dong was packing. Apparently these birds are worth about $400 each, but now they'll get to live the rest of their lives in the comfortable confinement of a zoo. Ironic, isn't it? [...]
[Follow the Easter Track Smackdown tag for all the pieces to date] With Amazon holding onto a slim lead over Last FM, we reach round three of this weekend's battle to prove, sort-of-conclusively, which of the various online music services are, by some measure, "the best". The third challenge is MoHoBishOpi's Names For Nameless Things. Coming out of Wales in 1996, briefly the Mos - or were they the Bishes? - were forced to trade under the weight of the NME's next big thing label. Although only for a couple of weeks. They were [...]
The Artisans (photo stolen from Roque) Today is a great day! Why, you ask? Because about a week after posting a new mix featuring a song by the fantastic band The Artisans , whom I've fallen in love with over the past month (only hearing just two songs!), I come to find out that Roque will be releasing a 3" CDr compiling their entire career output. Now, "entire career output" here only means six songs, but that's four more than I'd ever heard before, so I'm pleased as punch! More pleased than punch, to be [...]
It's funny how you can often have the most inexplicable gaps in your record collecion. Or maybe it's just me. Take the Popguns, for example. I own four of their singles: 1989's Waiting For The Winter , '91's Still A World Away and Crazy , and '95's Get Out . All of these I'd have bought at the time of their release, and all are utterly brilliant. But for some reason I never actually got round to buying any of their albums - despite the excellence of those singles and the fact that they released [...]

The Ting Tings are a stereotypical example of 'overnight fame'. Their rise in Britain (where they started) rapidly went from playing house parties to appearances at Glastonbury, with only a couple of catchy singles under their belts. By the time "Shut up and Let Me Go" appeared in an iPod commercial, their fame was already a sure thing. Their debut album, We Started Nothing , is out now. "Fruit Machine", "That's Not My Name", and their iPod track are all right in line with other electropop sounds in the current soundscape. Think CSS, Dead Disco, LeTigre, etc. [...]
It's been a while since we last did a record box here on Burning World (almost two years) but what the hell. This is a basic rundown of some of our favorite records at the moment. Hope you find something you like and if you do support the artist by making the purchase. enjoy. The Slackers - Leave Me (Indication) Taken from the new album "Self Medication" Buy Here [...]
(I prefer posting new music here instead of digging into the past. Well, I've been digging into the past quite a bit lately. Consequently, this is Episode 1 in a potential new series of said past digs, not-so-cleverly titled "A Century Removed" to keep the ACR acronym fully in play.) It's common knowledge that both of my brothers could care less about lyrics. I played with both of them in a band for 7+ years and it was never until we recorded something that they had even the slightest clue what any of [...]

The volume goes up to seventeen In the early to mid-nineties, those of a certain age may well remember a music magazine called 'Volume' which had about 200 pages in each issue and was the size of a CD case. I remember its format and content seeming to be much more radical than the mainstream music press. Although, I only ever bought the first 4 or 5 it went all the way upto issue 17 with each magazine featuring a CD of all the artists appearing [...]
