The Poppy Family - There's No Blood In Bone This is terrible, but also a little cool and interesting; maybe you'll think less of me, but I was reminded of this song the other day while hiding in the back of a porn film as the soundtrack. They don't put good music on porn films anymore, too much of a distraction. Bangrbros and Brazzers they're all about the nasty... skin flicks used to be about the music maaaaan.
Adieu l'Emile !

Ok, I'm not going to spend more time than necessary blathering on and trying to sound pseudo about the new mix I'm working on for Footsie's. Here's the summary: Last week, I dropped off my mixes at a bar in northern Los Angeles called Footsie's. Although I don't hang there too often, I certainly make plans to do so often. Shit, the current and former door guys are homies of mine. But for some reason, I get sidetracked. Much like I'm doing now... So I dropped off the mixes and had a little convo [...]

Mark made a Poppy Family post a while back but I have to add one more. For some reason I had never heard this song until Bobby London dropped it into a podcast that just came out over at Hamburger Eyes (which you should go and download as soon as you can). I think I may have listened to this song like 30 times in a row already. Listen to those drum breaks.. so sick. The Poppy Family - No Blood In Bone
There was a She & Him long before Her & That Guy. She & Him, of course, is actress/singer/songwriter Zooey Deschanel and multi-instrumentalist M. Ward, whose debut album Vol. 1 was one of the left-field hits of 2008. Deschenel's sweet, melancholy-tinged vocals wrapped in Ward's gentle country/folk/pop arrangements proved to a beguiling combination but not necessarily an original one. She & Him have drawn comparisons to countless acts and, today, I'll throw out a rarely mentioned antecedent: The Poppy Family, a Vancouver-based group led by another she-and-him partnership, Terry Jacks and his then wife Susan. Their two albums, 1969's Which [...]

Summer is ending and the August heat is making me think of the groovy soft rock hits of the early 70's. Beginning in the late 60's, Vancouver BC's husband and wife team of Susan Pesklevits and Terry Jacks started releasing a string of singles under the name the Poppy Family . Their psych-tinged, bubblegum pop landed on the much softer side of the typical Summer Of Love fair, and would eventually trade out the sitars for the synth-flutes and lap-steel that became a staple of A.M. radio in the early 70's. Their later output reminds me of driving around [...]

Thanks to myspace friend Gretchen for inadvertently reminding me about late '60s Canadian psych-pop outfit, the Poppy Family . Their debut LP Which Way You Goin' Billy? is some far out shit, especially when you consider that it's from 1969. In fact, I'm 99% sure that Dan the Automator samples their "What Can the Matter Be" on Deltron 3030 , so that should give you some idea...but that's beside the point. Listen to this incredible, slightly demented (but way ahead [...]
