In March 2010, Big Star' s Jody Stephens honored late band mate Alex Chilton with an impromptu all-star performance of the band's 1978 classic, Third (later Sister Lovers ), during South by Southwest. Later that year, Stephens unearthed the album's original scores and began staging a handful of shows across the country, featuring a shifting lineup of performers and singers, along with a full orchestra. Now, the project has announced two new performances for Chicago (June 28th) and New York City (June 30th). Stephens will be on skins for both outings and [...]

Schubas was another first for me, being new to Chicago and all. It’s not your cheap-beer-on-the-floor kind of venue (though there’s plenty of call for those in the diverse world of music); it’s very much an out-of-the-way nook suited for appreciating a good drink and a good band. The front room was warm, cozy, and decked out in lights, while the back room was dark except for the stage lights and the flickering candles on the tables against the walls. The venue had chairs. I am throwing this out quickly as I find it divides people: some [...]

Hunka hunka burnin' love: Ken Stringfellow & Margaret Cho Posies singer Ken Stringfellow released his fourth solo LP, Danzig in the Moonlight , last fall which found him a little more raw mode than the harmonied pop his band is known for. You can stream it via Spotify below. Just in time for Valentine's Day, Ken has released a video for "Doesn't it Remind You of Something?" which we're premiering in this post. While the album version [...]

It's a new year and with every new year comes a rush of artists releasing videos and albums at an alarming pace. While we mostly stick to posting artists' videos on our Twitter or Facebook pages on a daily basis, lately it seems that they're coming in far too quickly to keep up. What we're left with is an ever-growing pile of material that you may never hear... and we can't let that happen, can we? You may remember our [...]

Last night I was watching that teen comedy Girl Next Door (don't judge me), and halfway through I could have sworn I heard Youth Of Today. Besides leaving me very confused, it has put me on a serious Youth Of Today kick, and I've been listening to We're Not In The Alone pretty much nonstop today. Recorded in 1988, We're Not In This Alone is a hardcore classic. Besides being one of the bands that really defined the whole youth-crew style of hardcore, Youth of Today played thrashier, more straightforward hardcore than [...]

Taken from Ken Stringfellow 's new album Danzig In The Moonlight , the new video for "Superwise" was created by Spanish director Joaquín León and shot in Seville. "It captures the elements of the song - the nonlinear nature of time in my Philip K Dick-ian cosmology, evolution, devolution and more in a vibrant, touching and charmingly funny way", says Ken . "Filmed in Spain with me dropping in, ghostly, from whatever dimension I seem to inhabit." Danzig In The Moonlight [...]
Here's a great little gem I just found called "Superwise" coming from UK musician Ken Stringfellow . The song sort of starts off like a lounge type pop number that eventually builds into more a New Ponographers loud/epic tune. Now many of you may recognize the name from his work in huge veteran acts like R.E.M., The Posies, and Big Star to name a few . This new song however is Stringfellow on his own and his first new material as a solo artist since 2004. New album Danzig in the Moonlight will be available [...]
There’s really no need to sit here and discuss the resume of Ken Stringfellow, but I’ll humor you with some namedropping: The Posies, Big Star, R.E.M. Had enough yet? Well, Stringfellow is set to release his fourth solo album, Danzig In The Moonlight on October 2nd through Spark & Shine Records. Download the [...]
Ken Stringfellow is known for his work with many bands, primarily The Posies . He's built himself a nice solo catalogue as well. He'll add to it on October 2nd with the release of his fourth solo album Danzig In the Moonlight (which sadly has nothing to do with this man ). Listen to "Doesn't It Remind You Of Something" here:

top of the day! honestly, i dont know much about the posies, as i have never really listened to em. sure, i know quite a bit about em, but that never led me to check em out. i had a buddy on twitter request some posies stuff so i figured i would comply. for those posies fans out there. where should i start? 1. definite door 2. when mute tongues can speak 3. i am the cosmos 4. love letter boxes 5. We love buying records and last summer when we stumbled on Black Gold Records and Antiques I felt like a found a little mecca. I was so excited I had them take off their first T-shirt of a mannequin so I could buy it. I think I bought that pink Battles record there and a few others things. Anyway, here's a video put together by Brooklyn Independent TV. Oh and did I mention they also sell Coffee. Perfect place to stop off after dinner around that area. If I Love You (New European Gold [...]

Words // Scott Pingeton Criminally overlooked in their own time, Big Star will be remembered as one of the most influential bands of the last 40 years. They may well be the center of my personal musical universe, the sun around which most of my musical tastes orbit - power-pop, garage rock, soul, folk-rock. Paul Westerberg famously dubbed Alex Chilton "a man who could sing in a visible voice" , the phrase that gave this blog its name. One of the very first posts on VV back in March 2010 was [...]

Last night at Austin's Paramount Theater, an all-star cast of indie / alt-rock luminaries - from M. Ward, to The Replacements' Tommy Stinson, to Wilco's Pat Sansone and R.E.M.'s Peter Buck - gathered to pay tribute to Big Star 's Third , arguably the best unfinished record in rock. This was the second time a Big Star tribute has taken place at South by Southwest in recent years; the legendary power-pop / art rock band was set to reunite for the 2010 festival, but band leader Alex Chilton died suddenly just days before, prompting a troupe of his [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Erika Goldring, Getty Images Two years ago, the music world was stunned by the loss of Alex Chilton , the man behind both the Box Tops and Big Star . Hailed as "a Rosetta stone for a whole generation" by Peter Buck , Chilton's death came only a few days before he was supposed to perform at SXSW , and [...]

Love letter boxes - The Posies Everything just seems so right listening to the Posies. Like this is the way four guys in a guitar band should sound. This is the mark rock music should have raised itself to, and the Posies did it. Even though in many ways, down its many paths, this formula is used and achieves better, it really needn't.

Fan's dragon fly at Flaming Lips show, Sasquatch Music Festival in Memorial Day weekend. It's no secret that I take a lot of pictures. What's becoming less of a secret, though, is that I'm becoming less bad at it. Having spent so long as a photo editor, I'm naturally a bit more critical of photographs -- and especially my own. But thanks to lens upgrades (purchasing a 50mm prime, renting a 70-200mm) and software (Lightroom, Picknik), I'm getting awfully close to taking photos that I can [...]
That Game Theory's entire catalog is seemingly terminally out of print is a great travesty. Certainly they were one of the most important purveyors of '80s pop music in America. Over the course of three incredibly ambitious and almost flawless records, they had as good a track record as almost anyone besides XTC for consistency.
