Got a lil' Christmas treat for y'all. In between being a Posies, a Big Star member, a record producer extraordinaire, solo artist and a swell Haberdasher, Jon Auer took the time to record (for my blog no less) his own unique, beautifully rendered if somewhat dark-ish acoustic version of the holiday classic "Let It Snow!". All knowing Wiki tells me that [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Alex Chilton is the grandpappy of power-pop, but Wednesday night at NYC's Brooklyn Masonic Temple, where he and his band Big Star played their first New York show in more than a decade, the singer and guitarist burned brightest on a pair of low-watt slow songs. The first, 'The Ballad of El Goodo,' came midway through the quartet's 20-song set. "There ain't no one gonna turn me 'round," Chilton sang, his voice calm and reassuring, like that of an old friend. [...]
Kim Grant alerts us: Redwood bartender Laura Ann Masura was involved in a serious motorcycle accident in September and is facing thousands of dollars worth of medical bills, so Josiah from Light FM has put together a benefit including performances by Billy Corgan with members of the Electric Prunes and Ancient Chinese Secret plus Syd [...]

Jonathan Taggart Saying I was a bit award-ed out following last week's Polaris Prize gala would be something of an understatement, so the ceremonies for the Verge XM Awards the following night were largely ignored around these parts. But that doesn't mean the results weren't of interest - okay, Alexisonfire winning album of the year was of zero interest, but the declaration of Vancouver's Dan Mangan as artist of the year certainly drew a double-take. This response had nothing to do with Mangan or [...]

Brendan Benson . Jack White . Raconteurs . Fame. So now that’s out of the way. On his fourth solo album, Benson continues trying to escape cult hero status and graduate to indie (if not mainstream) stardom on his own terms, evident in his choice employment of producer Gil Norton ( Pixies, Echo and The Bunnymen , but also Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard Confessional ) to give him his most accessible sound yet. But asides from MOFF sounding noticeably smoother than his previous work, it’s business [...]

Above is the troublesome cover art for The Real Feel , the real deal solo debut from Spiral Stairs, neé Scott Kannberg and co-founder of almighty Pavement. You may have already tinkered a bit with Kannenberg's work fronting Preston School Of Industry, but The Real Feel marks his first outing under the pseudonym with which most music nerds still know and sorta miss him. Word according to the Matablog is that the recording went down in Seattle late last year and includes contributions from former members of PSOI and the Posies, as well as [...]

Apparently, if you love Powerpop-Altrock-Indie 90s, you shudda been at this past weekend's Taste of Randolph Street fest in Chicago. Not only did you get Saturday's billed bands of Tinted Windows, Urge Overkill and the Posies, you also got a guest appearance from Evan Dando. Cool! Good pix and UO video below. photo by Dan Parker photo by Dan Parker photo by Dan [...]
Hit 'em hard and hit 'em fast is the credo of any good power-pop band, and the Posies' LP Frosting on the Beater opens with a run of three songs that could be put on par with any opening set from just about any pop rock record. "Dream All Day," "Solar Sister" and "Flavor of [...]
When people think of Seattle music in the early 90’s, names such as Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, and Alice In Chains immediately spring to mind. But lurking underneath the grunge exterior was a much more interesting and diverse collection of bands, many of whom had been rocking the Seattle circuit for years.
This guy probably doesn’t have permission to post what he does, but I’m not really seeing a problem as some of this stuff is out of print and/or demos or vinyl only so it’s all good in my humble opinion. Older hard to find hardcore abounds, and I would have never been exposed to "Statue" without [...]

There was a point in time that I wanted to post an entry titled "Rock 'n' Roll Resume" that would list music-related project Ken Stringfellow has been involved with. Truth be told, I'm not sure there's anyone who knows (including Ken himself). The man has his hands in so many pies...most notably, as a musician: The Posies, Big Star, R.E.M., The Minus 5, and currently The Disciplines. Ken took time out of his busy schedule to share a few words with us recently. A photo of Ken [...]
If you were going to see Fountains of Wayne next week at the Triple Door and were thinking "you know, I really like opener Jon Auer an awful lot and want to see more of him in that venue", the Triple Door heard your pleas and added another show with just Auer two nights later, on January 17. read more

When you spend your time interviewing other people, the prospect of being the one answering the questions instead of asking them can be rather exciting. So, it's with great excitement that I share with you this link to PerfSpot.com, who recently interviewed me for a feature on T-Sides. Unfortunately there's no direct link to the story, so if you can't find it on this page , try clicking through here . The Posies: "20 Questions" (download)

Madrid, Octubre de 2007 Hace veinte años, The Posies echó a andar.
"I don't care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members." --Groucho Marx -- I have been notified that I will be the recipient of A BIG HONOR . My industry has an award (I guess it's sort of a lifetime achievement kinda thing - not that I'm particularly a grizzled veteran), complete with a banquet with hundreds of people, a magazine article about yours truly and other assorted aspects. This is apparently A BIG DEAL. The question I have is... "WHY [...]
I just braved getting trampled by a gaggle of pre-teen girls at McNally Rob's midnight release of Stephenie Meyer's long-awaited conclusion to her celebrated monster love story. I admit, it's quite an embarrassing self-indulgence to be reading young adult books at my old crumbly age, but I can't help myself. Besides, I'm offering you a good selection of music right here so there's that at least. I'm warning you, there are tons of spoilers under the cut (only of Books 1-3, since no matter how much of an easy-read these books are, it's unlikely that I can sift [...]

Door A door is a panel or barrier, usually hinged, sliding, or electronic, that is used to cover an opening in a wall or partition going into a building or space. A door can be opened to give access and closed more or less securely. Doors also have an aesthetic role in creating an impression of what lies beyond. They are also used to screen areas of a building for aesthetic purposes, keeping formal and utility areas separate. They act as a barrier to noise. Doors are often symbolically endowed with ritual [...]

For the three people who ever came to this site, I apologize for the lack of activity. Music has sort of sucked the past couple months, so I lacked proper fodder for any posts. However, I have scoured a few sites lately and let's just say my faith in humanity has been restored. Enjoy the new stuff and, as always, an oldie you should blare loud enough to make old people's teeth pop out. "Sequestered In Memphis" - The Hold Steady "Song For" - [...]
