I saw a gorgeous sight this morning, driving along a twisty-turny country road. I'd just crossed a rickety old bridge and after coasting around the bend I came across a grey kangaroo sitting in the middle of the road. Green grass on either side, shrouded in fog, it stared at me calmly before casually bounding away through the bush. It was a fantastic start to the day. Here's to unexpected views around the bend. And here's to the great pile of coverage I have languishing on my hard drive. Enjoy. Here I [...]
#30 Ratatat - Seventeen Years Album: Ratatat Year: 2004 Maybe you love Ratatat. Maybe you don't. Maybe you did love Ratatat, but have gotten tired of them as their sound has failed to evolve. It really doesn't matter. When you take their first LP, Ratatat, and cue up track one, you hear Young Churf boast about his [Read Full Post...]

Will someone please call a surgeon? Who can crack my ribs and repair this broken heart. Nothing Better by The Postal Service
Imagine if Passion Pit had a sense of humor and the talent of The Postal Service. That's Stepdad, your new favorite band. Extended play - Musical ensemble - Recreation - Music - United States

Just couldn't stay away could I. Oh well, a nice little post with some oldies for you. Let's just say it's an email inbox break, that thing is an intimidating monster these days, I dread opening it. Maybe if I change my email address I'll get less spam. Teaches me to post my email address publicly. Let's start off with an artist I haven't heard from in a while, Feist . I miss her music, time to dust off her records from the back of my shelf for a good listen again. [...]
Following last year's reissue of Jimmy Tamborello aka Dntel's Early Works for Me If It Works for You II, as part of their Phthalo Origins series, Phthalo Records is releasing a new limited edition 12" and downloadable digital EP on June 8th, titled Early Works, Later Versions. The EP will include electrifying new remixes and [...]

I recently had the good fortune to see post-Postal Service indie synth whatever-core band Magic Man, kicking ass in an overcast, early time slot of a certain Festival of Springtime Abandon . Sorta hometown heroes that they were, they played their hearts out for handful of their goofy, adoring college kid fans, and watching them it occurred to me: these guys are gonna be famous. Well, soon anyway. There's a precociousness to them that could stand to mellow a bit. Consider the backstory, in which childhood friends Sam Lee and Alex [...]

Words: Emmy Droege Those of you who are currently yearning for the Bloc Party of old, and yes, that includes 'A Weekend In the City' flock, check out electronic-pop group, Frame The City . What you'll hear going on in a song like 'We Were Wolves', for example, are electric loops harmonize with a similar vocal delivery to that of Kele Okereke , gently going from whisper and then lifting off into a beautiful near falsetto soar. Of equal note, fans [...]

I work in a place that's got a nuclear policy bent, and my week at work has been frenzied thanks to President Obama's nuclear security summit. In honor of the assembled leaders' pledge to corral loose nuclear material, I thought it would be fun to put together a nuclear playlist - enjoy! Nena, "99 Red Balloons" The Watchmen movie did a respectable job of setting the stage with nuclear tension by including this ditty by German pop band Nena, which tells a story of 99 balloons floating into [...]
Late night email for the ages. We were just sent a few tunes from Sam Billen off his Removers album, with remixes and covers that range from Sufjan Stevens to Deastro to The Postal Service. His voice has a fragile melancholic ting, and he adds a bit of dreaminess to the songs with airy crescendos in unexpected places. He released the first four songs you see in the widget below last month, and this month he delivered Sufjan and The Yellow Magic Orchestra. Pick up the album for free here . [...]

A lot of thought went into this review. A lot more thought than you would think. Last summer, when I first heard Fireflies, I tossed Owl City aside as a Postal Service wanna-be. Chona's YouTube video and Chris Walla's recent tweet summed it all up with a bow, "Owl City should consider buying Ben a Pony." So how did I end up at a sold-out Owl City show? A few weeks ago I was contacted by Lights' PR folks asking if I'd like a pair of tickets and [...]

Decent fusion of Kid Cudi's "Man on the Moon" and The Postal Service's indie anthem, "Such Great Heights". I have to admit I was much more excited when I saw the title then when I was finished listening to it all the way through, but it's definitely worth sharing. Give it a go. Three hot bands, two large mammals, and one cannibalistic instrument. Rating: 0.0/ 5 (0 votes cast) Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for links that don't make it onto the blog.

This takes a while to get going but it's beautiful when it does. If you're into The Postal Service or even a little Owl City then try Freelance Whales on for size. More organic than the synthy bee-bop of the later and that's welcome for sure. It's a modest round of harmonies that lead into the crescendo and by that time you've forgotten how soft it had all started. They're from Queens in NYC, they enjoy playing their music and I doubt they'd mind me sharing that with you. So download the pleaseantries and have a [...]
The dual profession of actress/singer has been tried and tested by numerous PYT's over the years, some of whom have been stellar at both and some who just make me want to shoot myself (aka Miley Cyrus). Thank God for Zooey Deschanel. The fairly-indie actress is now making very indie music as the "she" in She [...]

Tomorrow, the 82nd Academy Awards ceremony will take place in Hollywood. This annual shindig is a huge marketing tool for the film industry and is a chance for members of the Academy to tell each other how great they all are. In the US, the large number of independent and low-budget films that have been nominated for Best Picture over the last few years has also led to a drop in TV viewers (and advertising revenue). I would argue that a deterioration in the quality of films coming out of Hollywood over the last few years may be the actual [...]
