Last Wednesday, the good people at Stereogum released "11:593 in the 'Gum Drop, their free weekly newsletter. This track is, of course, the Miami band's version of the Blondie classic, and is off their forth-coming record By-The-Numbers. The album, a collection of covers whose titles consecutively climb from one to eleven (the twelfth song is [...]

This week, we're spreading the word about two great albums with two very different views of pop. First up, we've got Offend Maggie : the new Deerhoof LP. Tempo changes, weird melodies, obscure lyrics, odd time signatures: when it comes to writing a song, nothing is off limits for Deerhoof. Though it's obvious they don't play by the same rules as most bands, they still find a way to make their music delightful, bright, and extremely captivating. We've also got new music from Vivian Girls, Mr. Scruff, and the Miserable Rich. Not to mention a [...]

The Postmarks will be releasing another collection of cover songs. Eight Miles High is the 8th installment of their By The Numbers series. The band have a specific mindset when it comes to covers. "I think in doing covers, there are two ways of approaching it," explains the band's Christopher Moll. "One, you scientifically-backwards engineer the original and try to recreate it down to a 't.' The other, you use the arrangements of the original as a starting point and let the creative and sonic precedents you've laid down with your own music guide you. [...]

On By The Numbers, a collection of cover songs and the newest release from indie-pop darlings The Postmarks, there's a mood, a uniformity, that Francoise-Hardy-meets-John-Bar ry spin only the Miami-based group knows how to do best. Despite the fact the original versions spread fluidly across genre barriers, The Postmarks have a specific mindset when it comes [...]
The Postmarks - "Eight Miles High" [FREE DOWNLOAD @ EMUSIC] This month's thoughts come from Christopher Moll: "Released as a single in 1966, The Byrds' 'Eight Miles High' was instrumental in ushering in a new strain of rock and roll in the mid-1960s known as psychedelic or acid rock. The obscure lyrics, penned by Gene Clark, are [...]

The Postmarks - "7-113 [FREE DOWNLOAD @ EMUSIC] This month's write-up is from Jonathan Wilkins: "One can't help but picture Jack Black and Todd Louiso running down their 'Top 5 Songs About Death' when listening to '7-112 by The Ramones. We also couldn't help but hear early-'60s girl groups like the Ronettes...not surprising considering Phil Spector produced [...]

Far-fetched storylines, and a smartly dressed man-whore make up franchise known as Bond—James Bond. And just as Daniel Craig put his mark on the character, The Postmarks have decided to put their own spin on this classic Bond theme. Sometime between 3am and 4am, I listened to their cover of "You Only Live Twice*," on repeat, endlessly lulled by Tim Yehezkely's soothing voice. She's a girl with a boy name. Don't you just love that? Not that Nancy Sinatra didn't rock the original, but I love the mellowness of this version. It's so easy to get swept [...]

I am really digging The Postmarks right now. They are a trio from Miami making music that is what I can only refer to as "chill" and that you'd expect to be made almost anywhere but the Sunshine State. It's music for goloshes and puddle splashing in it's more upbeat songs and the quiet calm of a snowy day on it's more down key tracks. Their music is very much like that of Ivy with their French 1960's feeling, but at the same time seems to be channeling a bit more of the twee [...]

Today's Soapbox was brought to you by This Week's Track 9. The next day, Dog, Mickey Mouse and Rambo decided that they should, after all, cross the black river. They wanted to run free in the meadows beyond. Cat eventually agreed when Dog paid him in cold cash. And so they set out, and as they were bobbing on the choppy waters, they were hit by a tidal wave. All the creatures were sent into the water. Dog's paternal instinct kicked in and he swam towards Mickey Mouse and brought him to the shore. [...]
eMusic has a couple of free downloads today from The Postmarks, one of which is an intriguing duet from the James Bond flick "You Only Live Twice." The interesting quality to both songs-by sheer coincidence they are done by a...

As I am visiting my parishioners by public transport today I took the opportunity to play another game of 'The Random Reverend' (hit shuffle on iPod, post first 5 songs to blog, prepare for potential embarrassment). We start with David Ruffin and a track from his debut 1969 solo release My Whole World Ended . David was never a man to undersell a vocal and he is in fine voice here. I'll always be thankful to Dwight Yoakam as his debut album (from which this song comes) reignited my passion for music. During [...]

08. The Postmarks The Postmarks Unfiltered Know Which Way the Wind Blows Infrequently, music can be a synaesthetic experience - bare sound can produce not just a resonant feeling, but a visual one as well. I don't describe myself as synaesthetic in any way, but when I listen to this album, I see colors. Granted, it's a cliche, because what I see is aqua and green - bright yellow, bright hot blue - even when I'm listening to songs that are supposed to be about [...]
