The Verdict: It's fantastic to listen to this Rhino reissue of The Pretenders debut in the here and now of late 2006. Let me gush for a moment; if this album dropped today it would be a massive "indie-rock" missile on the unwashed hipster masses. Boom. Released in 1979/80, Chrissie Hynde, an American ex-pat, and her band of Brits created one of the finest post-punk infused, new wave, rock & roll albums of their time. Listening to it 25+ years after [...]
Boy, am I ever overdue for a post. I'm surprised this hasn't (has it?) been posted yet seeing as there are quite a number of members here who are nuts about the 80's. Anywho, the song is rumored to have originally been written by The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde for her ex-boyfriend Ray Davies of The Kinks but later on, said to be a song for their ex-bandmate James Honeyman-Scott who died of a cocaine overdose in '82. "Back on the Chain Gang" hails from the quintessential Learning to Crawl which is all-in-all a very ironically melancholic [...]

The Pretenders ...vocalist Chrissie Hynde , guitarist James Honeyman Scott , bassist Pete Farndon and drummer Martin Chambers were one of the best bands of the eighties. The combination of their sharp-as-a-razor songwriting, Hynde's unmistakable voice, Honeyman Scott's inventive guitar work, as well as the driving rhythms created by Farndon and Chambers created a raw, unforgettable sound. It didn't hurt that their albums were on Sire Records either, because the label was on the cutting edge of music on both sides of the Atlantic. The band's legacy continues [...]
Pretenders II After yesterday's piece on the Pretenders' reissues you had to know there would be a second helping, and today I am happy to oblige. Their second album, 1981's Pretenders II, came out hot on the heels of the debut. It was a further refinement of their sound, and it saw them become chart regulars with the fabulous hit songs Message Of Love and Talk Of The Town. It also has some of
This week one of my music collector super wishes came true - Rhino Records remastered and expanded the first two Pretenders albums. Pretenders and Pretenders II are a couple of absolute rock and roll classic in my book, and these reissues have been a long time coming. Both of then are now 2CD sets - disc one is the original record, disc two is rarities, demos and live tracks, much of it previously
unfortunately i'm a little late for this idea, as i know a few other blogs have done it already. but hey, i think having a blog named for a line in another michel gondry movie gives me a little authority right? so anyway, michel gondry's new movie the science of sleep is getting limited release this friday and i could not be happier. this will be his third feature-length flick, after 2001's human nature and my favorite movie, 2004's eternal sunshine of the [...]

Ahh, the eternal clash between labor and management. The boots and the suits. The have-nots and have-gots. The card-carrying union workers and the club-clutching union breakers. I wholeheartedly agree with the ban on Freddie Mercury parties, albeit for very different reasons. Whoever set this up must have never worked in the business again. DLR just trying to keep it off the floor , New Years Eve 1983. Martha Quinn tosses off a pretty great line here as well. I’ve been accused by many in the past of wearing green-and-gold glasses, but I might not accept a bet that the Pack won’t get shut out against the Bears opening day. Let’s remember something here â€" [...]

My favorites from Part 1 were the Kiss and U2 covers. Excellente! Here is Part 2 of the covers. Some of these bands are not realy high in my book but any band who realizes the importance of the Ramones gets a notch up on my ratings. The influence of this band is huge all throughout the music world. Thank God for Ramones! Part 1 is here . We're A Happy Family: A Tribute To The Ramones Various Sony (2003) mp3 Havana Affair [...]
