As reported by Billboard yesterday , Chrissy Hynde and company, aka The Pretenders have a new album titled Break Up The Concrete which will be released 9/23 on her new label Shangri-La Music . The album was recorded in 10 days with a mostly-new version of the Pretenders. In addition to original Pretenders bass player Nick Wilkinson, she added James Walbourne and Eric Heywood on guitars and notorious session drummer Jim Keltner. Coincidentally, this week I was just listening to super-group Little Village from 1992 that had Keltner on skins! The first track [...]

Here's the official statement: * Break Up The Concrete , the ninth album in the band's illustrious career and its first in 6 years (out September 23rd), has Chrissie Hynde collaborating with a new group of musicians. Recorded in 10 days, the result is a stripped down roots album, pure and raw, which highlights Hynde's timeless vocal sound. While the music for Break Up The Concrete may have its origins in rock's beginnings, the marketing of the album has Shangri La Music boldly embracing the present and future. Starting today, the label is launching a massive MP3 Countdown [...]

So today we're taking it back to 1985 with this brilliant song and video by one of my favorite groups The Pretenders. This video was a childhood favorite of mine, I remember being obsessed with this it, I can't quite work out why now, can u? Chrissie sure knows how to work that Top Hat :D
Continuing with Coldplay things this week, I did a little digging around and found a couple of good covers that Coldplay has done recently of other artists, and a couple of Coldplay songs that have been covered by other artists. Coldplay's done two pretty good covers - 2000 Miles , originally by the Pretenders, and Can't Get You Out Of My Head , originally by Kylie Minogue. In both instances, they provide their own solid sound to each, which is pretty nice to hear. Helena Noguerra also does her own version [...]

The Kinks: Stop Your Sobbing [ purchase ] The Pretenders: Stop Your Sobbing [ purchase ] If there’s on thing you gotta do, to make me still want you ... gotta stop sobbing now. What a great pop tune! I love The Kinks. The Pretenders’ version is pretty cool too. And it is very solid advice.

The Pretenders: Thumbelina [ purchase ] If you remove the incredibly lame track "Watching The Clothes", The Pretenders' third album, Learning To Crawl, is just about perfect. Rush Limbaugh theme songs notwithstanding, the album has really stood the test of time. The featured track is Thumbelina, which is one of my favorites. Chrissy and her little daughter are flying west, down the highway. "The Oklahoma sunrise becomes the Amarillo dawn."
Happy Earth Day inhabitants of the planet! Today is a great time to focus on the big and small ways we can all do our part at home, work, school and in our communities on a daily basis to nurture our planet and conserve our natural resources. Having been born and raised in Oklahoma, Native American culture has always been a big part of my life and a cornerstone of their tribal cultures
I am happy today in a way I haven't been since 2004. Do yourselves a favor and preorder some of this . Related: Just in case some bastard/bitch made off with your copy... Although The Pretenders were most definitely a band at the outset, the deaths of original members James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Farndon would soon alter the group's dynamic, making it primarily a vehicle for lead singer/songwriter Chrissie Hynde. The irrepressible Hynde had formed the band in 1978 in London after relocating to the UK from her hometown of Akron, Ohio to work as a music journalist. The band issued their self-titled debut album in 1980 and found immediate success with their spiky, self-confident style of punk/new wave-influenced rock. Hynde became an overnight star with her brassy, self-assured persona which [...]

Talking with Ms. TVD last night, I was reminded that my dad once toured with the Ringling Brothers Circus -- not as a performer but as someone hired to film the goings-on from the performances to the backstage stuff. She was kinda surprised to hear that and I guess I hadn't thought about it in quite a while. But often when I was a kid, the rough, uncut footage would come out and dad would narrate through the soundless portions. I had seen the footage pretty darn often and became pretty disinterested when he'd roll through the nostalgia AGAIN after [...]
STOMP DOWN SOUL (SON OF A SON OF A SLAVE) Larry Darnell Instant : 1968 Available on: The Instant & Minit Story Charly : 2005 [Buy It] The kick-ass "Stomp Down Soul," by Larry Darnell, is one of the very, very few songs, sung by an African American, which references "the peculiar institution" directly (rap's a different story, which I'm not going into today.) Lately, I've been hitting the history books, trying to figure out why.... Visiting a Georgia plantation in 1839, the British actress Fanny Kemble [...]
This week's show fell on Valentine's Day. Yes, the bogus holiday exploited by the greeting card companies, among others. So, what the heck, we joined the fray and played nothing but "love songs." Johnny Marr: Beyond the Smiths Part 1: 1987-1989 "There's a lot of guitar culture that I don't like at all ... I don't think that young people are that impressed with some guy brandishing Spandex trousers and a hideously shaped guitar, playing that kind of masturbatory, egotistical noise. Being a soloist who wants to just display virtuosity is a dated philosophy, and I don't think there's any room for it [...]

Don't let the first track throw you. Notwithstanding the typically old and twangy nature of this space, rest assured that your proprietor is hep to all the latest tunes flowing through the internets. Here's a funny one from The Teenagers about their favorite starlet, Scarlett: The Teenagers - Starlett Johansson (mp3) ( buy mp3 album ). Favorite line: "You whispered at horse's ears."
