It's that time of year to look back on the past 12 months and say "what the hell happened to the last 12 months?!". It's also that time of year where us music bloggers and self-proclaimed critics take the time to put together some Best Of lists for your reading pleasure. They don't really mean a whole lot and you can love 'em or leave 'em, but it seems like the right thing to do to sum up the year in preparation of the next. This year we're featuring personal lists from all of our fantastic writers. [...]
Well, it's been one of those years. For one reason or another, my record searching out ability, and time or inclination to sit down and write something about records, has been seriously curtailed this year. And so it seems appropriate that the first two records in my list weren't even released this year. So it goes. The Obligatory Album From Last Year That I Only Heard This Year Cotton Jones - Tall Hours In The Glowstream Tipped off by the marvellous Song, [...]
One of those rare events is taking place tonight at the Talking Head. Don't miss out. Trans Am will be performing their classic album Futureworld (which has just been re-released/re-mastered... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]

[Photos by acidjack] New York crowds are notoriously, almost epically jaded. As much as bands love the exposure of America's largest city and cultural capital, they also tend to be dispirited by the "show me" attitude of crowds that have seen it all before. Being from Brooklyn themselves, The Psychic Paramount must know this all too well - which is why they pulled out all the stops at Union Pool on a recent Tuesday night to deliver a jaw-dropping set that was one of the most incredible I have seen this year. [...]
The Top Ten Albums of 2011 (January 1st - June 24th) 2011 is half-over. How has it been for you? Same old, same old? Yeah, I hear ya. My year so far has been, uh…interesting. Yeah, that's the word. Interesting. Transitional, maybe? Transitory? Are those synonyms? Do they mean the same thing? Eh, I guess [...]

Adam and Baxter of MIRACLES sent us these answers to our questions in this next installment of the q and also a series. q: What is the last song you (really) heard? a: Antimagic 's "Shake Shake Shake" has been in heavy rotation all year. I rediscovered De La Soul 's Stakes is High last week after not listening to it for a few years. It still rules. b: For me, it's a tie between Young Widows ' "Old [...]

Press play on most albums and you're given at least half a chance to settle down and prepare yourself for what is to come. The Psychic Paramount are obviously not interested in such luxuries. Instead you get an absolute bloody battering of hyper speed guitars and bass, and a whirlwind of drums, from the very beginning of their latest output II . This initial mauling is repeated throughout and hence initial listens leave you thinking there's a lack of nuance and depth, but then it dawns there's a complexity and noisy subtlety (if that's not an oxymoron, which it [...]

Unfortunately I haven't gotten too deep into any of these releases yet. A few of them sound promising though... Releases That Got My Attention: Adele: 21 (Columbia) – The winner of 2009's Grammy for best new artist releases her second album. At the Palladium on 6/9/11. Listen HERE Julianna Barwick: The Magic Place (Asthmatic Kitty) – For fans of pretty, ethereal, vocal records. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy & Cairo [...]

A s rock bands go, The Psychic Paramount is a rigorously all-in proposition. No testing these waters. More than suddenly you are in, covered, drenched, exhilarated and wondering if you are in over your head, all in the same moment, all at once. But diving in headfirst (or were you thrown?) is itself only the jumping-off point. You weren't told to take a deep breath first because it wouldn't matter, you don't hold your breath that long; no one does. You [...]
The death of Maserati drummer Jerry Fuchs, also of !!!, kept the band's new album from being completed for most of 2010. It will now, for better or for worse, be considered an artifact of his legacy. Pyramid of the Sun is finished and ready for release November 9th on Temporary Residence Ltd. Former !!! and Out Hud mixer Justin Van der Volgen worked with Temporary Residence founder Jeremy deVine to mix the album. Furthermore, two of the LP's eight tracks ("They'll No More Suffer from Thirst" and "Oaxaca") are [...]
![Jennifer Gentle – "Sacramento Session / 5 of 3″ – A Silent Place Records [Album As Art #30/Daily MP3 #34]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2396833_lg.jpg)
*** The above is a Chinese ad for condoms that uses a Jennifer Gentle song as its soundtrack. Cool? Jennifer Gentle - "Electric Princess" MP3/download [NOT representative of what's happening on Sacramento Session ] When I see a limitied-edition record by a psych-rock band, I GET IT, dealing with the consequences later. In the case of my purchasing Jennifer Gentle 's Sacramento Session , however, there are no consequences to speak of; [...]

I almost skipped this week's Sunday Mix Tape. There are but four or five days left until my massive Top 100 Albums Of 2009 list is published, and it will contain many, many downloadable songs. I could not think of anything else to blog about today, so I decided I'll skip next week's Mix Tape instead. It's more likely I will feel a hangover from the effort that will go into preparing Friday's blog post, so it will be nice to skip next Sunday. Of course, my last-minute decision to compile some songs tonight left me with nary an MP3 [...]
Hi lovers. Tonight is Sunday. LOST begins again on Wednesday. That's like, three nights! Holy fuck balls! RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. This week I am compiling something that combines elements of intense instrumentation with frustrated, [...]

In seven days the forces of WNYU will celebrate the awesome fact that they have been in operation for three-and-a-half decades with a massive blowout at the Knitting Factory . It's the last month that the venue will operate in it's NYC location (remember, they're moving to Williamsburg?). The station has hosted a number of great live acts over the years, including Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Circle Jerks and this year the likes of Marnie Stern, Homosexuals and Fuck Buttons. The anniversary party is next Monday, December 15 at 7pm and will feature the line-up of Pylon [...]

It's hard to imagine what could have spawned the many-headed, fire-breathing monstrosity that is Gamelan Into The Mink Supernatural . That album was so unexpected that I never thought to look up whether these guys had any earlier records. The answer is apparently "no," from a perusal of their catalog at No Quarter Records, but they did release this compilation of home-recorded experiments, which cover a wide range of musical styles, but only hint at the power they would later be harnessing. Although it sounds little like their other release, it's a great collection of music [...]

I'm under the influence. I'm not in my right mind. Because right now I'm listening to this album for the fourth time in a row . Even when I got Deerhunter's album, I wasn't as immediately crushed by the music so much that I had to hear it again to be sure it was that awesome. Maybe when I first heard Don Caballero's "Sure We Had Knives Around" I had to rewind it a few times, but that was playful - this is deadly serious.. Maybe on Earthless' album, I had to check to [...]
