This past weekend I started working on a mix. I was trying to combine two of my favorite types of music...lo-fi indie, folk and/or bluegrass, with cheesy 80's pop music. My mission was to find some great covers of 80's pop music and compile them into a mix that sounded more like any respectable indie/folk mix you might share with a friend. I accomplished this task, and have been listen to the result ever since. Since I was so contented with the result I thought I would share the tracklisting with you and include a few links for [...]
(from Wonder Woman v1 #182, May-June 1969; by O'Neil, Sekowsky, and Giordano) Here we have the Heroine Formerly Known As Wonder Woman using her kung fu to bring down Doctor Cyber's legion of attack birds. It's from the "mod judo" phase of Diana Prince's career, when she traded in her bracelets, golden lasso, and invisible jet for garish 60's fashion wear and a blind mentor from the inscrutable Orient (and I cannot type those two words without hearing them spoken as a Don Adams impersonation of Charlie Chan), the absurdly-named named "I-Ching." [...]
I have to thank a few of my friends for introducing me to The Puppini Sisters. I wasn't sure what to expect when the title of a thread on a message board I frequent read "The BEST Cover of Wuthering Heights." My relationship with Kate Bush 's music is still a bit precarious, but I do rather enjoy that song, and I'm always up for a good cover. Inside the thread, was a link to a YouTube video, a live performance of said "Wuthering Heights" cover. Within 30 seconds, I was smitten. The [...]
As I promised, here you go, the first part of the New Act Week two-post feature, introducing 12 of the hottest new acts I digged recently, both on the pop and the indie sides. Let's start with the pop artists, first. The Webb Sisters Two good-looking sisters hailed from England, singing these glassy, shiny, polished acoustic pop melodies. Their debut single, 'I Still Hear It', is a little summer anthem I've been listening to. It's a catchy driving [...]

Fruitstock is surely the ultimate in what journo Miranda Sawyer recently called ‘restivals’. That is, “festivals tailor-made for the bourgeois festival-goer. You get good music, gorgeous surroundings and 'relaxed' people; but you also get proper toilets, decent food and comfy accommodation.†Now as I get older, I can almost embrace that description as something positive. It’s not longer good enough merely to be in eyesight of my heroes any more. But you do get the impression that at events like Fruitstock the music is kinda incidental, or just a part of the experience. The vast [...]
Sometimes being fabulous is seriously compromised by your day job -- that's where I am right now. I'll say no more than that, for discretion's sake (and the fact that I want to keep said day job), but suffice it to say that I'm totes happy it's Friday. Seriously. The one thing that's kept me sane for the past few days is the new album from Rubicks , In Miniature (due out Aug. 14) -- this of course, would be what I wanted to post yesterday when my [...]
Now you'll either love this or hate this. It's a mystery no one has thought of this before; The Puppini Sisters embrace such wartime originals as "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (From Company B)" and "Mr. Sandman" alongside period-style versions of such pop/new wave hits as Blondie's "Heart of Glass," Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" and the Smiths' "Panic." Marcella Puppini formed the trio, "The Puppini Sisters" in September 2004 with Stephanie O'Brien and Kate Mullins on a lark – what would happen if you updated the Andrews Sisters? Marcella is the husky [...]
