West Seattle Summerfest 2006 photo by Chas Redmond Once the heat turns up in Seattle, you know it's festival time in the Northwest. Seattleites crawl out of their damp caves for various music and arts festivals, like the Bite of Seattle and Bumbershoot. Put on your sunblock, 'cause there's a lot coming up: West Seattle Summerfest (July 13-15): Fortunately, Seattle's heat wave - yesterday had a record high of 97 (and keep in mind, people, there ain't now air conditioners here) [...]

Clearly fans of 80s psychedelic post-punk, The Purrs have been making a name for themselves this year with their self-titled debut. While blending in the same atmospheric guitar twangs as their predecessors Echo & the Bunnymen and The Comsat Angels, vocalist Jima has the same aggressive swagger that the Verve's Richard Ashcroft or the Oasis brothers conveyed during the 90s. Jima doesn't mind the mind the comparisons that are given to him either, "I think the Verve and Galaxie 500 are great. Plus they had careers and I don't. You can compare me to a tree if it [...]

This past Thursday I had the pleasure, courtesy of Filter Mag , of checking out the Seattle based band The Purrs . Never heard of them, but hey it's a show and it's free and after checking out their myspace, I was really excited to check these guys out. I read somewhere of all the "sounds like" quotes. From REM on Loose Talk , Brit Pop in general, early Bowie/VU and since I am a fan of all the before mentioned groups you can expect my surprise when I don't really think that they sound [...]

I haven’t been really focusing on the Left Coast side of things, so the fact I’ve been playing the new Purrs record helps me kill two birds with one rock. The Purrs are a Seattle based band that are finally getting some attention. Their self-titled album on Sarathon records is actually a mini-greatest hits package featuring remastered tracks from the Dreams Our Stuff Is Made Of LP and No Particular Bar, No Particular Town EP. I’m not sure if Seattle is still known for [...]

That's right, Seattle produces other music besides what can easily be filed under grunge, and The Purrs are a perfect example. Although The Purrs have been around for a few years and have put out a few efforts on their own (the EP No Particular Bar, No Particular Town in 2004 and the LP The Dreams Our Stuff Is Made Of in 2005), today marks the release of their record-label debut: a self titled album which in a way is what the band members cheekily refer [...]

Remember, I love bands from Seattle? Well, meet The Purrs . These guys make music that I shall deem "dreambliss pop" (you heard it here first, a new genre). If you are a fan of Luna, Brian Jonestown Massacre, The (early) Dandy Warhols, The High Dials, then you will love this band. Sarathan Records will release a new Purrs album on September 12th. The new album contains seven remastered songs from the fantastic 2005 release "Dreams Our Stuff Is Made Of" along with a couple re-mixed songs from the EP, "No Particular Bar, No Particular Town". The [...]
