See ya, Meg. I don't know what's more amazing: that Jack White has found someone he can work with and doesn't end up punching the shit, or that this song wasn't even bigger. Arguably the rock and roll hit of the summer (although "Dani California" may have an argument), this song was adored by indie rock kids everywhere, mostly because of Brendan Benson's presence. Which leads me to my next point - the real great part of the song (and the chorus) isn't Jack White's part, [...]
You can feel it as soon as the tab is torn from your ticket and you step through the door. The crackle of excitement. The buzz of expectation. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is officially, an event! And when The Raconteurs finally take to the stage and launch into an introductory jam, such is the welcome, you'd think this alt-rock supergroup were returning home. Like Gods appearing to their believers, the hysteria at the sight of Jack, Brendan and the other [...]
I’ve started compiling my top of ’06 lists, and this year I’ve decided to include only artist—I’m not going to do a best albums or best songs list this year. But if I did do a best song list, Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy would be #1, hands down. Does that make me crazy? Probably. In a year where Xtina, Game, JT, Jack White’s new gang, Prince, Ghostface, and The Killers—all champion producers of singles—made strong releases, I’m picking this? The creation of novelty producer and an established, albeit basically minor-player, [...]
We love the way Coca-Cola spokesperson Jack White rushes up to make an announcement every time he reworks his diary, as if the world can't quite cope not knowing exactly what split he's making between making music with the White Stripes and making less interesting music with the Raconteurs. (The Raconteurs, of course, the closest thing to a band version of a Jolly Boy's Outing it is possible to imagine.) Here's the latest pronouncement: "I have to honestly say that I'm divided totally 50/50 between The Raconteurs and The White Stripes. My brain now [...]
I hope all of you had a delightfully disturbing Halloween. I spent my Halloween having my mind fucked at a Negativland concert. Negativland, for those of you who don't know, are a highly influential sound collage/experimental music band from San Francisco who have been releasing revolutionary recordings since the early 80s. They helped lay the groundwork for mash-ups, intelligent dance music, glitch-pop and countless other experimental music movements since then - and I haven't even mentioned their work fighting copyrights and intellectual property issues. Check out their site and their wiki for more info. If they're [...]

Last night's SOUNDteam show in Boston was as exquisite as it was brief. The boys from Austin played a very tight set. It's the third time I have seen them and they just keep getting better! photo credit: Stephen Pinker The Sound Team Setlist - AXIS Boston 10/12/2006 Witch Hunt * a new song! No [...]

This year I learned something very important. Now that September has passed, I think I should let you all know. September means college, and college means Beer Pong. That’s right. What does this have to do with you, you ask? Simple. At the end of each month, I will be posting a mixtape, basically of all the songs that had heavy airplay in my life during that month. Being as September means college, and college means Beer Pong, this is my OFFICIAL Beer Pong playlist. If you don’t have one yourself, [...]

Mere days after the end of ACL Fest, Virgin Festival is about to take over Baltimore. It takes place on Saturday with 14 bands ( Keane dropped out) on 2 stages and 6 DJs playing inside a dance tent. While ACL was excess at its finest, Virgin Fest takes what appears to be a minimalist approach. After taking a closer look, you will see that this is not the case. For $97.50 plus tons of surchages, you would hope not. [...]

This is the halfway point, not just of Saturday, but of the entire weekend. Keepin up? Good, so much more to see and hear. Since this is part 2, it's 4:30 until the end. The afternoon does not start out any easier than earlier in the day. Four choices confront you: The Long Winters , an indie-pop outfit from the Pacific Northwest, provide beautiful melodies and harmonies over bouncy guitars. And if you recognize something about them, it's leader John Roderick, who has seen action with Harvey Danger and Western State [...]
I turned on the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards because I saw something about Jack Black hosting it. After being a long time fan and all, I figured that I owed it to myself. Black's intro, however, was just not funny. I thought he had it in him, I really did...but, such [...]

1. Giant Drag 's cover of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" is awesome first thing in the morning when you have no idea where you are. 2. According to the most heard song of the weekend, if you ever see something coming over a hill, it's probably a monster (although "Eddie Munster" is also valid). 3. Dirty Pretty Things really don't have enough material for an entire set. Nice trumpet though. 4. The Silent [...]
