As reported before, French imprint Hands In The Dark has gathered two of America's finest experimental musicians, Lee Noble and Brian Pyle aka Ensemble Economique , to fill both sides of Motion Forever , one of those split LPs that actually make a whole lot of sense. We've already featured Noble's "Woman in the Dunes" and Pyle's "Your Hands, Your Lips, Your EYES, Your Hips” back in May and premiered the former's stellar track "Memory Photo" . Today we're happy to present the brand new video for the other Ensemble Economique [...]
Designer Anton Schnaider and Art Lebedev has created a radiator in the shape of a T-Rex skeleton, that he's dubbed the Thermosaurus . The concept works just like any other radiator. It's made of cast iron and though it strikes me as not practical, the team behind it says, "the item is highly efficient and energy-savvy, thanks to its complex structure that includes a skull, spine, ribs, legs, and tail bones" used as the heating mechanism. If you had the interior space and a sense of whimsy, this would be amazing. [via [...]
Originally published in July of 2009, we revisit the You Can't Always Get What You Want Cover Wars with recent renditions from Umphrey's McGee and the cast of Glee. You Can't Always Get What You Want is the closing track on the 1969 Rolling Stones album Let It Bleed . There are some very interesting quotes regarding the drumming on this track included in the book According to the Rolling Stones, you can see the page in question over at Google Books . [...]
The RecordBar in Kansas City can feature some pretty diverse lineups, but the booking agent there must know what he's doing because these lineups always work. Wednesday, the bar brought Ume, Fierce Bad Rabbit and Radiation City together for a genre-ranging show that carried the audience from gentle indie pop to blown out rock-and-roll. Portland's Radiation City started the evening off with some beautiful harmonies. They're a young group with old souls - their mature music seemed lifted from the 40s. Facebook lists four members in the band, but there were five [...]
Eerie Body by Radiator Girls More Rainbows by Blackhawks Radiator Girls is actually just a guy...one guy, but he released a cassette split with Blackhawks in April from MJ MJ Records . 'Eerie Body' is by far the best Radiator Girls tune on the release and it starts out slow enough, but then kicks into a 50's surf bashing frenzy about him wanting a girl's body, but being afraid of it. The Blackhawks do a nice job of blending a psych folk-pop sound and here you'll listen to their [...]
Matt, Lizzy, Cameron, Randy, (Patty, Kevin) CMJ 2011 Tell us about the formation of the band. How has everything else fallen into place since then? Lizzy: Cameron and I started to write songs that weren’t fitting with our other projects at the time. After some postponements due to family issues and starting our tape label, we decided to play out for the first time in February 2009 at Rontoms in Portland. The response was surreal. Cameron: [...]

YVETTE – “Radiation” Single – Download
It's been awhile since we heard from Brooklyn-noise rockers YVETTE (Noah Kardos-Fein and Rick Daniel). The band released a new single, Erosion/Cold Sweat , back in March. Now the band has released a new single, Radiation/Scrape It Off, through God Mode , and of course, it's required [...]

YVETTE – “Radiation” & “Scrape It Off”
At the beginning of the year, we posted " Cold Sweat ," a song from the Brooklyn no-wave duo YVETTE. Today, they release a new single, "Radiation" b/w "Scrape It Off," and they've helpfully posted both of the songs online. Mr. Dream drummer Nick Sylvester, a great friend of mine, produced both tracks, and they both capture a squalid and visceral beauty that you wouldn't necessarily imagine when you read the words "Brooklyn no-wave duo." They are very good, and you can listen to both below. Read More...

Ahhh, sorry bros ... no new musics today ... PSYCHE! I totally had you going there for sec! You were getting all torn up inside thinking about a sad, sad Tuesday without good ol' Shanny's wussy recs and off-base comparisons. Well, fret not amigo! Preview // 3rd Annual Daze Between Festival
For some, long days at the Fairgrounds and late nights at their favorite rock club for seven days over two weekends are not enough to satisfy their Jazz Fest-induced live music jones. Enter the Daze Between Festival, lodged between the first and second weekend of The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, which returns to the Rusty Nail for the third straight year. This time around the event returns to it's origins as a one-day affair, but the modest courtyard stage of festivals past is being replaced by a full-scale outdoor set-up, making room for bona fide full [...]

In Memoriam: Bands We Lost In 2011
In September we toasted the best new bands of 2011 . Bright futures for those guys! But come this time of year it's also important to remember the musical groups who called it a day. Some of these acts were taken from us before their time, while others imploded due to overwhelming apathy. Herewith our look at all of them, good and bad and who? . Thanks again to Matt Neatock for the video production assistance. Please hold your applause until the end. Read More...

20 Questions: Radiation City
Mixing '50s doo-wop vocals with modern indie rock -- and then releasing their debut album on cassette only--has certainly made Radiation City stand out in the crowd. A love for Barney's Version , OutKast, and borrowing turntables from the '40s makes us love the group even more. Portland's Radiation City has an unusual sound, to say the least. Let's see: it's kind of like the Andrews/Puppini Sisters vocal harmonies strapped to '70s rock guitar but given a modern-day indie band backing, ripe with emotion and feeling, sounding like it was homebrewed out of several eras of music but [...]

PHOTOS / HIGHLIGHTS: Day Three @ Voodoo Experience 2011
Scroll to the bottom for a photo gallery from Sunday at Voodoo 2011 My experience since being in New Orleans is that Sundays are an exceptionally treasured day in the city, and this perhaps never rings truer than during the all-too-common special weekends and particularly, during local music festivals.
